The trick to finding a career you love is to indulge in something you are passionate about. These days there is a wealth of job roles that didn’t exist ten or even five years, meaning the market has opened up drastically to allow people to expand their horizons and forge ahead in a new career.

One such industry in the UK that continues to thrive is the beauty industry. Over the years, cosmetologists have been able to relearn new skills, adapt their styles and learn new procedures and treatments to allow them to grow and expand as the market changes.

If you have an eye for beauty and are passionate about helping look and feel good in your own skin, then retraining in a career in the beauty industry can be just the option for you. In 2020, the UK beauty industry was worth £27 billion.

There are different courses and levels of education required to help you become qualified for many of these career options. On top of this, you can always take refresher courses and completely new courses to challenge yourself as and when you choose to help further progress your career.

Depending on the area you want to train in, you can enrol at local colleges, private training centres or head to university to study more technical aspects such as product branding and to promote new beauty products and treatments or to learn more about the pharmaceutical side and cosmetic science to allow you to learn to how to develop your own beauty products and treatments.

With this in mind, what are your options for careers within the beauty industry?

Makeup Artist

There are no prerequisites for enrolling in a makeup artist school; the only criterion is that the student has a strong desire to work in the field. Flawless foundation procedures, concealer application, and contour and highlight are among the topics covered in the course. Other topics include understanding the function of a makeup artist, utilising corrective makeup techniques, and the materials necessary for the work.

Your course will help you to discover how to identify the right products for different skin tones, complexions and more to allow you to achieve a truly flawless finish.

If you are already adept at applying makeup, you can enhance your CV even more by learning the art of permanent makeup application. Adding permanent makeup training to your repertoire can allow you to work with a broader range of clients who need something more permanent or less complicated than a standard makeup routine.

Hairdressing

Hairdressing is a career that is well-known throughout the world. The hairdressing industry offers a wide variety of employment prospects. Students will master the following skills in hairdressing: hair making, on-scalp whole head and retouch blending services, client consultation, lighting products, workplace safety, hair making equipment usage, processing time, heat acceleration, toning and toning products.

Beauty Copywriter

If you prefer to use your words and help people discover more about the products and procedures they can undertake, then you can become a copywriter.

A beauty copywriter is someone who writes blogs and articles about beauty, fashion, and trends. A fashion magazine is an example of a product that is the result of beauty copywriting. A beauty copywriter can expect to earn an annual salary of £40,000 on average.

Spa Treatments

In the field of spa beauty and body therapy, students learn cosmetic science, advanced facial treatments, facial electrotherapy, eye treatments, ear piercing, pedicure/manicure, hair removal and removal of unwanted hair, cosmetic makeup, diet and exercise, nutrition, heat treatments, body massage, professional ethics and business, first aid, health, safety, and hygiene in the salon.

Educator

If you are already in the beauty industry and want a new challenge, why not look at training to help you educate up and coming stylists for the future. The beauty industry will always benefit from the knowledge and experience of those in their field, and if practising your art no longer ignites that fire for you, then why not ignite that fire in others?

Store Owner

Beauty is about more than just how you look. It is about the confidence beauty products and treatments can give and the effect of feeling confident and comfortable in your own skin.

Anyone with a thorough understanding of the notion of beauty can choose to create a beauty business in which beauty goods, beauty accessories, and other such items are sold. Retail shops and boutiques are owned by people who understand the true definition of beauty and can offer genuine insights and advice for those looking to find the right products for them.

You can choose to sell only makeup items, skincare times or both and more. You can sell the products alone or offer treatments and beauty services alongside them to create a one-stop beauty shop to cater to your client’s needs. Ultimately the decision is yours, but opening a beauty centre store can be a lucrative option, especially if you run it in conjunction with an online store.

Nail Technician

As a nail technician, you will learn how to groom cuticles, eliminate calluses and dead skin. During your training, you will know how to do the perfect manicure and pedicure on models, along with nail design techniques and applying acrylic nails.

As a nail technician, you could learn the art of warm paraffin wax treatments in which warm paraffin wax is applied to the forearms, hands, and feet to soften and massage the skin. The plant elements in the paraffin wax deeply moisturise the skin.

Nail technicians can operate in various settings, such as a nail salon, a hair/beauty salon, or a mobile nail technician. The choice is yours.

Learn a new skill at home

Vlogging

Setting a YouTube channel is another way to make the most of your free time stuck at home. I have a YouTube channel and it keeps us busy as well. If you have a thing for visual content and you have knowledge to share, vlogging may be your calling.

Baking

We love baking here. We have baked loads of cakes in the last couple of weeks. The next on our baking list is a Banana Loaf! You could get yourself a baking book online and play around with different recipes. It may just be the start of a new hobby or career.

Hairdressing

Many of us have no idea how to really cake for our hair. Some of us struggle to do our own hair. One new skill I am working on is hairdressing. I already make my hair and daughter’s hair in plaits and all, but I also want to really learn how to make cornrows. I will be watching loads of YouTube videos to help me.

Make your beauty products

I do this already and I plan to make even more beauty products at home. At the moment, I make hair oils and hand wash products from home and it gives me joy that I am able to make some of the products I need from home. You could do this as well. Do some research online and find the area that interests you.

Writing

Do you have a flair for writing? You could improve your writing from home and even write a book if you are feeling up to it. The sky is only the beginning.

Finding Your Own Unique Style and Look

It is not only the constantly changing face of fashion that influences how we present our image to the world, but also our inner identities and personalities, because without people, fashion is nothing. Even if we buy the same skirt as 4000 other people, it is what we pair it with, the accessories, the hairstyle, the makeup and US that makes it our skirt and no-one else’s.

Some people who may fall into the trap of following the latest trends will struggle to come up with their own individual styles, and can sometimes appear a little more than mannequins advertising the latest hot labels. Our looks, as enhanced by our choices of hairstyle and clothing, can be a powerful way of expressing who we are and how we’re feeling. This means that finding our own individual style is often a lifelong journey, with experimentation, emotion, and the influences of fashion, all coming together to produce our very own signature look.

This requires some serious style experimentation!! YAY! Of course we have the fashion shows, the catwalks, the girls shopping trips, but there are also a few neat tools online:

  • Blogs
For detailed advice and style tips there are many good fashion and beauty blogs out there, which deal with choosing real clothing and beauty products rather than the latest catwalk drama. Search “top fashion blogs”, “top beauty blogs” or “top styling blogs” and bookmark your favourites.
  • Also, try a search for “fashion style quiz”, which will turn up quite a few questionnaires which aim to predict which looks could work for you based on your lifestyle and personality – most of these are purely for fun rather than serious tools, but they can sometimes light a spark of inspiration.
  • For a more serious, but also more complicated, online fashion tool try Polyvore where you can put together a look for free and experiment virtually to see if you can come up with a great new style combination for yourself.
  • Your hairstyle is perhaps even more important to your look than your clothing, as it’s not really something you can change by a great amount from day-to-day. Some people love to change their hairstyles every few weeks, while many of us are a little more cautious and would be nervous about going out on a limb with a new style or a new hairdresser.

To help you out, there’s a great new service from Rock Pamper Scissors, the trendiest place to book hairdressers in Manchester and the rest of the UK. They have developed the first appointment style search feature in the hair and beauty industry. Which lets you browse through hundreds of different hairstyles, choosing from options such as your hair’s weight, colour, type and so on to find the look you want. Once you’ve narrowed your choice down, you can book an appointment online with a salon in your area, with the hairdresser already knowing your exact requirements from the choice you’ve made.

However much you want to experiment with different looks and hairstyles, remember that fashion is all about self-expression and enjoying how you look, not getting hung up on what’s on-trend and what’s so yesterday.

Play around, have fun, and show the real you to the world with pride!
