Learn a new skill at home

With many of us are quarantined at home, this is the best time to teach yourself something new. Learn a skill at home to take your mind off what is going on all over the world. To decide on the skill or skills you want to acquire, ask yourself, what you are really interested in. Here are some amazing ideas for you –

Blogging

You could set up a blog to keep your creative juices flowing and see where the blog takes you. I set up this blog over seven years ago and I am glad I did. I wish I set it up earlier. You can start blogging today if you like. It only takes a few minutes to have your brand new blog up and running. I offer a blog coaching service, and I can coach you on how to make the most of your blog, so you can start earning money from it. You can send an email to fashionandstylepolice@gmail.com to hear more about the blog coaching service I offer.

Vlogging

Setting a YouTube channel is another way to make the most of your free time stuck at home. I have a YouTube channel and it keeps us busy as well. If you have a thing for visual content and you have knowledge to share, vlogging may be your calling.

Baking

We love baking here. We have baked loads of cakes in the last couple of weeks. The next on our baking list is a Banana Loaf! You could get yourself a baking book online and play around with different recipes. It may just be the start of a new hobby or career.

Hairdressing

Many of us have no idea how to really cake for our hair. Some of us struggle to do our own hair. One new skill I am working on is hairdressing. I already make my hair and daughter’s hair in plaits and all, but I also want to really learn how to make cornrows. I will be watching loads of YouTube videos to help me.

Make your beauty products

I do this already and I plan to make even more beauty products at home. At the moment, I make hair oils and hand wash products from home and it gives me joy that I am able to make some of the products I need from home. You could do this as well. Do some research online and find the area that interests you.

Writing

Do you have a flair for writing? You could improve your writing from home and even write a book if you are feeling up to it. The sky is only the beginning.

How to write a blog post in 30 minutes

As much as I love writing and sharing my experiences with you all through Fashion and Style Police, I must admit that there was a time when I struggled with publishing a blog post so regularly. It’s funny how it changed so quickly with constant practice. Now I put out a new blog post every day. This may seem really overwhelming for many of you reading this, but what if I told you I sometimes spend 30 minutes on some articles I write?

During my hours, days and months of trial and error, I was able to develop a system that helped me create blog posts faster and more efficiently without compromising quality.

I assure you that this process is easy once you practice it consistently. But I must warn you that you have to be very patient and gentle with yourself while applying this process. It took me a while to get a hang of it.

Here is my exact content creation process.

Research first

Your speed of writing a blog post depends most on the work you put in before actually putting pen to paper or fingers to keyboard.

It’s so much easier to write a blog post quickly when you have a good grasp of the information you want to share. If you’re already an expert in the topic you are about to blog about, that’s even better but don’t completely discard the research stage even if you know A-Z of your topic. There’s always something new to share.

Create an outline

The outline serves as a roadmap. It forms a skeleton of your blog post. Research coupled with a really good outline means that you’re done with 70 percent of the blog post.

An outline has all the subtopics and points you want to talk about in your blog post. All that’s left is for you to fill in the blanks.

For me, it takes about 10 minutes to create the outline. What I do is come up with a topic then break the topic up into subheadings or points depending on if I’m writing an essay or a listicle. Each item in the outline is a sentence summing up what I want to write about.

Free write or dive into automatic writing mode

This is where the magic happens. Remember all those one-line sentences you wrote in your outline? In this stage all you have to do is expand on each of those sentences. Allow the one-line sentence to inspire the paragraphs that follow. Don’t overthink your words or sentences. Just write what comes to mind. I basically free write my way though my outline. To help me boost my speed, I also set 30 minutes on my timer.

Don’t edit. Just allow the words to flow. The reason why people spend so much time writing a blog post is because they over think the sentences and edit while writing. In this stage let your hands take control and write as it comes.

Once your 30 minutes is up re-read the article, edit and add references where you think it’s necessary. You may add personal stories into your blog post but make sure you do this after your 30 minutes is up so you don’t get carried away from the main material.

How long does it take you to write a blog post? Please share any tried and tested tip.

The Power of Journal Writing

I have always had a journal for as long as I can remember. There is so much power in journal writing, and as a lover of reading and writing, I can’t be without a journal. The power of journal writing can be so tricky to explain, but to do so in a few words, I would say, journal writing is the process of discovering your true self.

If you are stuck in a limbo or trying to find out who you really are, I would advise you to keep a journal for a few months. Those months would be all you need to discover yourself and what you are really on about. And you will be stuck journal writing for life too! It is that addictive.

I recently came across an amazing stylish stationery brand – Pen Heaven. This brand offers a range of pens and journals from luxury brands, which can be engraved with a personalised message of your choice. I got the opportunity to have my blog initials engraved on this beautiful red Chianti Large Leather Journal. And I also got the same initials on this Cross Bailey Medalist Fountain Pen. They have both motivated me to journal write even more. The personalised touch makes them even more special. These 2 would be going everywhere with me for sure.

These items would make great personalised gifts this Christmas. There are various pens and journals available, in different designs. So there should be 1 for everyone. If you in need of a truly unique gift for a special someone this Christmas or whenever, pop over to the Pen Heaven website. I am sure you would be spoilt for choice. I know I was!

Why is Journal Writing so powerful?

Journal writing is the most effective way to capture our thoughts and dreams, which fuels our creative juice. That is what makes it so powerful. I would be lost without a journal or notebook. I prefer to have the pages of my journal lined, just like the one here. It keeps my hand writing neat, and helps the writing flow.

What do you think of my new journal and fountain pen? Are you a fan of journal writing? Please share your thoughts.

Thanks for reading, commenting and sharing. Have a great day!
