My Acne Story

I have written extensively about acne and various ways to deal with it. So for my True Stories post this month, I decided to write about how my journey with acne started. I started the True Stories series last month with my personal injury story, and it was well received, so expect to read monthly personal true stories.

I have always had a ‘troublesome’ skin. Once I hit puberty, my skin was all over the place with pimples and spots. I remember it being extremely had to tackle. I tried treating my pimples and spots with everything and anything. I even tried applying toothpaste on them overnight, which seem to work but left me with spots to remember. This skin issue went on for all my teenage years and even after. But it went on a whole new level when I went camping in 2007, and had to sleep rough for a few days. I had a massive acne outbreak all over my face, neck and back. It was a horrible sight.

I am not 100% sure of what led to it but I suspect it was the fact that we had horrible living conditions in the camp. I had to sleep rough – on the bare floor the first night. And when I eventually got a bed space, it was more of a hell hole with too many of us. So I guess all that and more made my skin go gaga.

It took months for my skin to return to my regular acne state. I tried everything and I eventually got rid of most of them but I have the acne scars left on my face (God bless the makers of makeup), and loads on my back.

Now for those who don’t know, Acne or Acne Vulgaris is a long-term skin disease that occurs when hair follicles become clogged with oil and dead skin cells. So Acne is characterised by whiteheads or blackheads, pimples, spots, greasy skin and in some cases – scarring.

I had blackheads, spots, pimples and a bit of scarring. Some parts of my face were usually greasy too. But I am happy to say I no longer have to deal with acne. It is now a distant memory except for the scars left. However I know many people have to deal with their acne and scars everyday and I know how frustrating it can be.

The good news is there is now a treatment for acne scars in form of the Laser Acne Scar Removal Treatment. This laser treatment tackles the appearance of acne scars on every area of the body. The treatment is fast, easy and it improves the overall texture and condition of the skin.

The video above explains the treatment process at Pulse Light Clinic London in detail. It is definitely worth watching.

This Thing Called Acne

Hot Pink Image

This thing called acne, do you struggle with it? I have always struggled with acne for as long as I can remember. And I know many women and men that have had to struggle and still struggle with acne. So I know it is a common issue. You would think a woman like me about to hit her thirties won’t have to still deal with this things but I do. My acne flares up and down depending on my state of mind, the time of the month, my diet and how many hours of sleep I get. And sometimes I am relaxed, well-rested, and not that time of the month but it still flares up, so I really don’t know.

Many of us have to deal with acne and the scars some of them may leave behind, which is the part I detest the most. When it comes to acne and the scars, I try to take care of myself as much as I can and let makeup do the rest. A well applied makeup does a good job of hiding most of the acne, and good filters gets rid of the rest so your pictures look good, that is if you are that worried about them.

I had a friend once tell me to make use of some photo editing software to get rid of some of my pimples/acne before uploading the photos on the blog. I found the comment more naive than annoying so I let it slide but it made me reflect on how we women worry so much about our looks and the looks of others.

Well it is good to know that our acne scars can be wiped away thanks to the Laser Acne Scar Removal. This treatment can get rid of acne scars on any part of the body in a matter of 3/5 sessions. Anyone can have it down. It is suitable for all skin types. There is no downtime required, and only minimal discomfort has been reported.

I think this Laser Acne Scar Removal treatment is a fantastic treatment. It is definitely worth doing. Apart from getting rid of acne scars, this treatment improves the condition of the skin and the overall texture, which is a win-win for me.

5 Foods for Great Skin

Coral Blush Image

I have started paying extra attention to my skin. I guess the fact that I am turning 30 in a couple of months is dawning on me. I thnk my skin is lovely, if I say so myself, lol. But I would like to improve it in general. Beautiful and healthy-looking skin is the way forward.

In addition to keeping a strict skin care routine and using the right beauty products, I pay attention to what I eat too. This is because eating the right kind of food plays a major role in having beautiful skin. A healthy diet is important as it provides vitamins, minerals and other nutrients that will help rejuvenate your skin and give it that healthy glow. I guess you can say that you can actually eat your way to great skin, because you can!
There are many foods out there that are particularly beneficial for the skin. So I picked 5 yummy food items you can quickly prepare and munch on – and perhaps do a little something extra with too. Here they are:
1.    Dark chocolate
I found this the most surprising item on this list. Who would have thought that dark chocolate could be great for the skin!
Dark chocolate made up of 70 percent cocoa contains a powerful antioxidant called flavonol. This antioxidant fights free radicals and protects the skin from harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays.
Another awesome thing about dark chocolate is that it helps the skin get hydrated. This is good news as skin needs moisture.

Fun fact: Did you know that applying melted dark chocolate on your face reduces puffiness? You can say it makes a delicious face mask. Speaking of chocolates, I have a chocolatey giveaway running at the moment. Have you entered?
2.    Oats
If you’re among those who don’t eat porridge, now is your time to reconsider. Oats are extremely nutitious and beneficial to the skin. It contains high level of calcium, magnesium, protein and potassium. It also contains Vitamins E and B which are really great for the skin. It keeps the skin glowing and healthy.
Fun fact: Oats can be used as a scrub to exfoliate the skin. It can also be used to make a moisturizing face mask.  It helps restore skin moisture and reduce inflammation which makes it great for acne. I suffered a lot from acne while growing up, and I hated it.

I didn’t suffer from acne alone. Many of my friends stuggled with acne too and some even have the acne scars as proof. So it is good to know there is now a Laser Acne Scar Removal Treatment available for those who have acne scars. Pulse Light Clinic now offers this treatment, which I think is amazing. The treatment can be carried out on surgical or acne scars anywhere on the body, including the face. There is no down time needed, and you should only experience a mild discomfort.

3.    Walnuts
A handful of walnuts a day supplies you a good dose of omega 3 fatty acids and vitamin E, which are both great for the skin.
Walnuts help in improving skin elasticity. This makes the skin very soft. It also contains copper which aids in collagen production. This makes the skin nice and smooth. I will be chewing a lot of walnuts this summer, hahaha.
4.    Tomatoes
Now I personally do not like chewing tomatoes. I find them blah but I have been informed of the skin benefits of eating a tomato a day, or drinking a glass of tomoto jucie every day. If you want your skin to have that youthful glow, then make sure you make room for tomatoes in your diet. Tomatoes contain an antioxidant called lycopene. Lycopene is an anti-aging antioxidant. Interestingly, lycopene gets absorbed by the body easily when it is cooked or processed.
Drinking tomato juice can make dull-looking skin come alive. It also makes the skin smooth. Tomato juice is an ideal drink for the summer as it can protect the skin from the harmful effects of UVA and UVB rays. In fact, an 8 ounce glass of tomato juice contains the sun protection factor (SPF) of 5. Isn’t that great?
Fun fact: Tomatoes can also be applied topically. It helps lighten dark spots caused by acne.
5.    Yogurt
Thanks to the protein content in yogurt, it’s a great wrinkle-fighter. Protein helps makes the skin firmer which in turn helps eradicate fine lines on your skin and makes your skin smooth. To get a double dose of these benefits go for Greek yogurt because of its high level of protein.
Fun fact: Yogurt, when applied to the skin, helps reduce the appearance of acne.

I will be eating a lot of these foods now, I need to step up my diet/skicare routine.

What are your thoughts on this?
