Exfoliating: Why you need to do it

In today’s busy world, one has to be on ones toes in order to survive. Most of us have a hard time trying to organize our day in a way which involves both being productive and healthy. For example, on average, people have less than an hour to prepare for their day. One has to cram enough healthcare to last a whole day’s worth of work and stress. So exfoliating seems to be hard work for many.

It’s only natural, then, that we would fail to do so very well. It’s completely fine to let yourself slack off on hygiene once in a while. However, it can be very dangerous for your body if done on a regular basis. For example, your skin does not need constant attention since it has numerous features of its own specifically designed to keep it in good shape. Our oil pores, for example, keep the skin sufficiently moisturized so that the cells on our epidermis do not die, leaving behind a layer of corpse cells that stick to our face.

However, it does happen over time even when our oil pores are functioning properly. It can sometimes happen when dust particles shut off your sweat pores and oil glands, causing your skin to dry up. The solution to this problem is also very simple: exfoliating. Exfoliating is not a very complex method in itself. Originating in ancient Egypt, exfoliating is used to get rid of the dead skin cells on one’s outermost skin. An agent is often used to get rid of the dead skin cells on the the skin without damaging any nerve endings or causing permanent damage to the living cells in the skin.

Other forms of exfoliating include waxing, which, as a byproduct of getting rid of your hair, also gets rid of the dead skin cells clustered on the surface of your skin. Although waxing is not a conventional form of exfoliation, it is very much so. This can be used for most of your body, but as many readers might be wondering, is it good for your face? The answer to that question depends solely on the type of wax you are using, as that can make a major difference. Some acids in the wax could make the skin on your face redder than it is supposed to be. Hot wax could cause more damage to your face than good, as it would damage a lot of cells on your face before it cools down enough to be peeled off.

Shaving is also classified as a means of exfoliating your skin. When we shave, the strokes of our shaving brush alone remove a lot of the dead skin cells on the surface. Later, the double-edged razor blades strip off the thin layer of dead skins as they strip off hair. This is why shaving often makes us look fresher and makes our skin glow.

 

Exfoliating and Acne Treatment

Exfoliating, as many people know, is a very good way to ward off acne. Although it is generally believed that acne is something only preteens and young adults suffer from, it can persist for a long time in certain types of skins. Which in turn would keep the cells relaxed and the skin healthy. This can play a major role in acne treatment for there are a lot of regimens that one could follow in order to keep ones skin in good shape and to keep oneself away from acne, but the usage of those and how helpful each of those would be to you depends totally on the type of skin you have, as there are a varying amount of skin types across the globe and sometimes the differences can be startling but to get the best results, it is important that one refers to a dermatologist.

How your Daily Skin Care Habits May Cause Acne

Most people suffer from acne at some point in their lives.  Many remedies claim to fix dry skin or oily skin in a matter of a few simple steps.  What causes oily skin or dry skin may depend on your individual body chemistry and environment, but your skin may benefit from changing a few simple portions of your routine.  When it comes to skin, ignore the fads and consider how these skin are habits may be causing your acne.

 

 

Not Hydrating Enough

Hydration plays a major part in the health of your skin.  Without enough water, your skin will become dry, flaky, and create signs of wrinkles.  No matter whether your skin is extremely dry or excessively oily, hydration is crucial to more than just hydrating skin.  Drinking water increases circulation, which brings fresh nutrients to the skin’s cells faster.  Water also flushes out toxins and waste products that could be making your skin appear dull, tired, and aged.  The next time you find yourself needing to quench your thirst, go for a drink of water instead of soda, juice, or an athletic beverage. All of these drink options contain a high amount of processed sugars that will actually harm your skin. As opposed to water, processed sugar provides a feast for bacteria, which therefore causes acne. Drink more water to keep your skin youthful.

 

Not Retaining Hydration

For many, drinking water is not enough.  For example, if you have naturally low blood pressure, you will have to make an extra effort to retain the water to help your skin function.  Retain hydration in your skin by applying a hydration cream every morning and night.  Generally, you will choose between an oil-based or water-based cream based on your skin type.  Many skin types are more compatible with oil-free moisturizers, as the oil does not clog their pores and cause more irritation.  However, some old-school methods swear by classic natural oils.  Your grandmother, for instance, may have used fats like Crisco for years, as well as butter, coconut oil, or olive oil, just to name a few.

 

Scrubbing Face with Harsh Exfoliates

There is much debate as to whether exfoliates help or harm skin.  While dermatologists may not all agree on a final conclusion, it is likely that some people may benefit from some sort of exfoliate treatment.  Therefore, the answer is: it depends.

Regardless of skin type, it is probably best to steer clear of harsh, gritty exfoliates that can tear up your skin and cause irritation. This means that body scrubs are out of the question, at least when it comes to facial skin. Oily skin may best be suited for chemical masks or cleansers that clear skin with only a gentle application and wash. For a natural remedy, some people hold fast to an old favorite—baking soda.  Baking soda is versatile because you can adjust the dosage depending on the severity of your skin problem. For oily skin around the T-zone, use less water in order to intensify the baking soda’s effect, while dryer areas like cheeks can be more watered-down to protect skin.

 

 

Using Too Many Face Masks

The DIY face mask trend has quickly spread to become a household staple. The idea behind the DIY mask is that skin responds better to natural organic chemicals and compounds. Ingredients like yogurt, avocado, tomato, olive oil, lemon, cinnamon, nutmeg, eggs, bananas, vinegar, and more.  While many of these masks can bring positive benefits to the skin, it is always important to test a small area first before covering the face. This will let you know whether you have an allergy to certain foods on the skin as well as to see if you have a strong inflammatory reaction.  Some masks, such as those that use cinnamon, can burn the skin and should be used sparingly.

 

Not Getting Enough Sleep

Beauty sleep is real. Sleep is incredibly important to maintain the physical health and strength of your body. While you are asleep, your skin produces more collagen, which is a compound that prevents wrinkles and sagging. On the other hand, sleep deprivation can decrease blood circulation, which is what makes skin appear dull and tired.

Better skin starts at home. A simple change in your routine can work wonders on your skin.  If your skin problems persist and you do not see any change, consult a dermatologist to find what solution works best for you.

My Acne Story

I have written extensively about acne and various ways to deal with it. So for my True Stories post this month, I decided to write about how my journey with acne started. I started the True Stories series last month with my personal injury story, and it was well received, so expect to read monthly personal true stories.

I have always had a ‘troublesome’ skin. Once I hit puberty, my skin was all over the place with pimples and spots. I remember it being extremely had to tackle. I tried treating my pimples and spots with everything and anything. I even tried applying toothpaste on them overnight, which seem to work but left me with spots to remember. This skin issue went on for all my teenage years and even after. But it went on a whole new level when I went camping in 2007, and had to sleep rough for a few days. I had a massive acne outbreak all over my face, neck and back. It was a horrible sight.

I am not 100% sure of what led to it but I suspect it was the fact that we had horrible living conditions in the camp. I had to sleep rough – on the bare floor the first night. And when I eventually got a bed space, it was more of a hell hole with too many of us. So I guess all that and more made my skin go gaga.

It took months for my skin to return to my regular acne state. I tried everything and I eventually got rid of most of them but I have the acne scars left on my face (God bless the makers of makeup), and loads on my back.

Now for those who don’t know, Acne or Acne Vulgaris is a long-term skin disease that occurs when hair follicles become clogged with oil and dead skin cells. So Acne is characterised by whiteheads or blackheads, pimples, spots, greasy skin and in some cases – scarring.

I had blackheads, spots, pimples and a bit of scarring. Some parts of my face were usually greasy too. But I am happy to say I no longer have to deal with acne. It is now a distant memory except for the scars left. However I know many people have to deal with their acne and scars everyday and I know how frustrating it can be.
