Wearing your kinky hair natural can be very tricky. It can get so tricky that you may feel like giving up on the natural hair dream. I have been wearing my hair natural for many years now and I have discovered tips and tricks to help keep my hair healthy. It has not been easy but when I look at how healthy my hair is, I know the whole work has been worth it. I will be sharing images of my hair in the next few weeks but for now, here are some ways to help you take care of your kinky hair while you sleep –

Sleep on a silk or satin pillowcase

I find sleeping on silk or satin pillowcases very comfortable and doing this also helps keep my natural hair healthy. Tossing and turning while you sleep puts pressure on your hair follicles which can lead to hair breakage. Cotton pillowcases dries out the hair which leads to breakage. To protect your hair structure and sleep comfortably, invest in silk or satin pillowcases.

Wrap up your hair in a silk bonnet or scarf

Always put your hair in a silk bonnet or scarf (you can use both if you wish) before going to bed. This along with the silk or satin pillowcase keeps the hair moisturised and protected. Always ensure you tie the scarf on the forehead and avoid making a tie on the hair edges so you don’t weaken that part of your hair.

Put your hair in twists or braids

I like to have my hair in twists or 2 braids to protect the tips and keep the hair secured and neat while I sleep.

Spray on some products

This keeps the hair soft, easy to manage, moisturised and healthy. I have a spray bottle with a water and coconut oil mixture I like to use on a daily basis. I always make sure I spray on some of it before I go to bed. Here is the exact coconut oil I use:

Beauty Muse: Yemi Alade

The talented and beautiful Yemi Alade is the Beauty Muse of the month. I have previously featured Yemi Alade as a Style Icon on Fashion and Style Police a couple of years ago. Apart from her stylish taste in fashion, she also has some pretty facial features, which is why she is a Beauty Muse. For those who do not this beauty, Yemi Alade is is a Nigerian Afropop singer and songwriter. Her big break came when she won the Peak Talent Show in 2009. Her hit single a”Johnny” was released in 2014, and her career really took off that the catchy song.

I am a huge fan of Yemi Alade’s music. Her beats are always super catchy and she is also a great dancer. I enjoy watching her music videos, they are always full of amazing moves. This woman is the definition of an African Beauty. Her facial features are stunning and she obviously knows her to care for skin. I have always admired her glowing skin and I am always on the hunt for great skincare products to try. So when I came across an interview with Vogue, where she shared her beauty secrets, I knew I had to blog about it. Here are some skincare products and makeup tips she swears by –

Coconut Oil

Yemi Alade moisturises her face with some coconut oil after cleansing. The fact that she uses coconut oil doesn’t surprise me at all. This amazing product is known for the great skincare benefits. I have a bottle in my bathroom cabinet and I use it on my hair and skin. Coconut Oil is one of those multitasking oils you just need to have.

“Because I am a performance stage artist, and I dance a lot, the most important thing is the primer,” she says. “It keeps everything in place.” After a full-coverage long-wear foundation is applied, Alade uses two different concealers to highlight her lids, then sculpts her eyes with a contour palette, courtesy of the Nigerian beauty brand Zaron Cosmetics. “The main thing that pushed me to learn how to make myself up is because when I travel around the world, I find that Nigeria is very ahead in terms of makeup skills,” she explains. “The Nigerian makeup artists know exactly what they’re doing.”

The Benefits of Lavender Oil for Skin

Hey beauty and skincare lovers! Hope you are having a great start to the week. I am a huge fan of Lavender Oil. It is one of my favourite essential oils. I use it pretty much everyday and the benefits of this amazing oil are too numerous to list here but I will try my best to mention a couple. For those who have never used Lavender Oil, it is an essential oil derived from the lavender plant. This essential oil can be used on the hair and skin, and it can also be taken orally and breathed in through aromatherapy. For this post, I will be focusing on the benefits of lavender oil for skin only.

Essentials Oils Image

Combats skin issues

Lavender oil can prevent and heal acne by unclogging pores and reducing inflammation. Like all other essential oils, this lavender oil has to be diluted with a carrier oil. My preferred carrier oil is coconut oil. Diluting lavender oil and coconut oil creates the perfect facial oil to help you combat acne, pimples, spots and other skin issues. You ca also dilute lavender oil with a carrier oil to create a facial toner.

Skin lightening oil

If you are dealing with hyperpigmentation, lavender oil may be all you need to help you lighten the dark areas on your skin. As always, dilute a few drops of lavender oil with a carrier oil of your choice and apply it daily to your area.

Anti-ageing oil

Lavender oil is great for combating wrinkles and fine lines on the face. It contains antioxidants which are great for shielding the face from free radicals. To get rid of fine lines and wrinkles, dilute a few drops of lavender oil with coconut oil, and apply the mixture to your face twice a day.

Sunburn treatment

Lavender oil has anti-inflammatory abilities which are great for the treatment of sun burn. To do this, combine 3 drops of lavender oil with 3 drops of coconut oil, and apply the mixture three times a day to the affected area. You can also put the mixture in a spray bottle and apply on the affected area three times a day until the burn heals.
