Are Celebrities Paid to Appear on Reality Shows

I’M A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here is currently on and I am loving it. I enjoy watching celebrities living the rough and crazy live in the jungle. It is good entertainment, and I am sure many of you enjoy seeing the cool celebs outside of their comfort zone. I know I enjoy seeing the celebrities in the jungle. Just like I enjoy seeing them being stuck in a house with other celebs in Celebrity Big Brother. Taking a break from work to watch the clips on TV adds a bit of fun to my life.

In the early days, I use to wonder if the celebrities ever got paid to drop everything in their “real life” to go on a reality show. The very busy celebs would likely lose some money while in the jungle, so it would make sense for them to get paid to appear on the show. The curious me did some digging around, and I came across an article – How Much Are The Celebs Paid? on Conversations About Her website, and that pretty much answered all my questions.

Celebrities are offered a huge amount (depending on how successful and popular they are) to appear on reality shows. The celebrity fees were uncovered thanks to Unreality TV and Cash Lady. Just take a look at the infographic below.

I am amazed at how high some of the figures are, just look at Spencer Matthews, famous for playing himself in the hit reality show – Made in Chelsea, being paid 300,000 to appear on I’M A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here! However, there is a rumour that he walked out of the camp with nothing after his 3 day stint.

Apart from the crazy high fees, I am also amazed at how varied the fees are as well. Just look at Lewis Bloor, famous for playing himself on the ITV hit show – The Only Way is Essex, he was paid £50,000 to appear on Celebrity Big Brother according to this infographic, and then we have Stephen Bear (who I have never heard of), known for appearing on Ex on the Beach and Shipwrecked, being paid only £12,000. It just confirms the fact that reality show is all about popularity, almost like the blogging industry.

Avner Brodsky, co-founder of Cash Lady commented on these findings –

“It’s surprising to see the figures the networks spend bringing our favourite shows to air. It’s something that we, as consumers, don’t really think about when we plonk down on our sofa on an evening.”

I always knew that the celebrities would get paid crazy money to appear on reality shows. It is a business and they are a Brand at the end of the day. They won’t drop everything to appear on a reality show with the hope of winning the prize money. They would have to be compensated for their time. But I never guessed the fees would be this crazy and varied in some instances. I guess that explains the ‘bad blood’ between some of the contestants on the show some times.

What do you think of these fees? Are you as surprised as I am?

A Fantastic Home Office

I am currently in the middle of sorting out our home office. There was a designated room meant to be a study but I never got to sorting it out until now. It is still a work-in-progress. We have got a few bits and bobs like a printer, drawers and shelves sorted but there is still a lot more to go in and go out. And I need to crack on with the decorating.

At the moment, I work anywhere and everywhere around my house, but I tend to favour my bed (very bad I know) and the couch (also very bad). You can also find me working in a room at the top floor of my house. It is my little Writers’ Coven I told you all about some months ago. I love working there because there is a ceiling window, and it looks amazing especially in the summer.  The direct sunlight keeps me awake and alert. I get to take some amazing product shots there as well, which is why I cherish this particular work space so much.

Here are the features I look out for in a home work space –

Direct sunlight

I need at least 1 window in my work space, and I like to sit close to it. It keeps me very awake and alert. And that is the reason why my top floor bedroom is my writing refuge. The ceiling window keeps my creative juice flowing.

Comfortable sitting and typing position

Like most busy mothers I know, I suffer from aches and pains every now and again. I spend hours in a day on my laptop, so I like my work space to be very comfortable. I pay special attention to my sitting position position. I make sure I am sitting and typing in the right posture with regular breaks.

I am currently shopping around for some home office furniture, and I have my eye on some loose home office furniture, and I am hoping to get them all in the next few months.

Perfect Temperature

I recently wrote about how I struggle with keeping our house warm during winter, and keeping it cool during summer. I work from home, so I need my home office to have the right temperature, especially in extreme weather situations. I won’t be able to get any work done if the temperature isn’t right.

Sensible Storage

I like to have my home office very organised. I can’t think in a mess, so everything has to go into the right place. Our home office is only a small room, so I have to make the most of the tiny space, and that is where sensible storage comes in handy. I got a couple of movable drawers which I have found very handy. And I also have a book shelf, which stores majority of my work stuff, in an organised manner.

These are the features I look out for in a home office. What do you look out for?

How Free Writing Can Unleash your Creativity

As a freelance writer or blogger there are times we experience moments when we don’t have the inspiration to write. We experience writer’s block or are simply not motivated to put pen to paper (or fingers to keyboard).

Although such moments come and go, it’s not something that should be encouraged. In fact cultivating the habit and discipline to write everyday can completely change your life and improve your writing.

Free writing is an incredible practice that unleashes the creative ideas lodged within you as well as gets you in the mood of writing.

What is free writing?

Free writing is basically a writing activity where you allow yourself to write out whatever comes to your mind without stopping, editing or rationalizing what flows from your mind. The aim behind free writing is to uncover those thoughts or ideas that you hide within you, far away from your conscious mind.

Free writing doesn’t care about structure, efficiency or accuracy in grammar, or the right choice of words. It focuses more on the process of unleashing your creativity or unearthing those thoughts or perspectives you don’t voice out. Most times you bury your creative side by over thinking about what you write. Free writing liberates you from anything that would hold you back from freely expressing what you have in your mind. Free writing gives you a unique voice.

How free writing works

What makes free writing so effective with unleashing your creativity is that it completely prevents you from over thinking what you write. Most writers will edit as they write or pause for a long time trying to come up with the right word, phrase or sentence structure. This usually slows you down or discourages you from going any further. Since you’re not allowed to rationalize what you write, the results of your free writing exercise don’t reveal what you expect. In essence it allows your creativity to roam freely, which is what we need to shine like a diamond that we are.

Free writing helps reveal your writing voice and inspires you with ideas and raw materials you can use for your writing projects. Free writing pushes your unconscious side to reveal new thoughts, ideas or perspectives that you never realized you kept within you.

How to free write

Free writing has only one rule: write fast without thinking. This will give you the freedom to allow yourself to flow with the stream of creativity. This is because writing fast will ensure that your hand writes (or types) faster than your brain can think. This takes your writing out of the zone of your consciousness and permits whatever you had within you to take the lead.

To get started, you need to follow these steps:

  1. Time yourself so that you stay focused on writing. 10 minutes is enough time to free write.
  2. Write quickly without stopping until your time is up.
  3. Let the first word that comes to your mind prompt you to start writing. Don’t think about the right opening sentence. Just work with what comes to your mind and write about it. Even if you have no idea what to write about, write about not having an idea to write about.
  4. Don’t worry yourself about grammar or spelling mistakes. Messy is allowed. What’s important is the process of writing, not how or what you write.
  5. Don’t judge, critique or edit your writing. Don’t allow anything to interrupt your flow. All the editing and fine-tuning can be done later.

At the end of the free writing exercise, you’ll be surprised about the deep insights you’ll find in your writing. You’ll be inspired with new ideas on what to write. And most of all, you’ll unleash your creativity.

Do you free write?
