Being Fashion Savvy for Dance Recitals

In order for a dance recital to come off perfectly, several ingredients need to be mixed just right. Those who will be performing need to have a desire and passion for learning. The instructor will need to have a love and patience for teaching, and the costumes of the performance need to be appropriate for the theme as well as fashion forward.

Here is all you need to know about being fashion savvy for dance recitals through the eyes of a dance instructor.

During my second year of college, I began teaching ballet lessons at a local dance studio. As long as I can remember, ballet and dance had been a part of my life. When it became clear that I needed to be doing something part time in order to make some money while in school, it seemed like the perfect fit.

My first group of students

The group of girls that were in my first class were second year students. They knew the basic fundamentals and a few different techniques, but I was excited at how much I was going to be able to teach them. Looking back, I can say that once I began instructing was when my passion for ballet began to fully develop.

The lead instructor and owner of the studio gave me full range over the class and our performance at the recital. I guess she wanted to see what I would be able to do. I was to pick the musical pieces for the performance, the style of dance we would perform, even the costumes the girls would be wearing was my choice, as long as they were within the budget.

Believe it or not, I must admit the freedom to choose the costumes was the most appealing yet the most terrifying of them all. I knew how important choosing the right outfit has become in the overall impact of any type of performance. I knew that the right fashion statement behind the performance would take the girls to a higher level.

I spent two weeks going over everything from dance pant styles that were available and researched the designs by Narcisco Rodriguez, Isabel Toledo and Calvin Klein’s Francisco Costa who create costumes for specific ballets to get inspiration. I thought carefully about the colors of leotards, even accessories the girls could wear in their hair for the big performance.

Thousands of ideas came to mind, however, there was a budget I had to take into consideration as well. The help of a friend who works in a fabric store came in the perfect time. She helped me combine the traditional tutu with styles, materials and forms I envisioned.

I couldn’t believe how excited the girls were to learn the dance and wear my design. Some of them even begged me to keep the costumes.

The feeling of being appreciated

Once the recital was finished is when I started to breathe normally again. The girls were exceptional and the comments from parents and other fellow instructors were how big of an impact the costumes I had designed made on the overall impression of the dance. I even got advised to major in design which I’m seriously considering.

I am happy the designs turned out great. What are your thoughts on this post? Have you ever had a dance class?

How to Rock the Casual Chic Look

If you’re looking for something simple yet fashionable this summer then this should be your go-to style. The casual chic look is one that never grows old. It’s easy to put together, comfy and trendy. In fact, it’s one of my favourites.

This summer, it’s all about having that laid-back vibe and this look pulls it off perfectly. From A-list celebrities to those who walk on the street, this style is by-far one of the most popular styles you’ll ever meet. You can rock the casual chic using almost any style of piece, from vintage style to modern/contemporary style.

Here are some tips on how you can recreate the casual chic look and be fabulous this summer.

Floral print

Floral print pieces are a favourite every summer. From tops, to skirts and trousers, there’s really no limit to what you can do with them. To look more casual, layer a floral patterned top over light coloured bottoms like a white skirt or a pair of white shorts. That way you are able to not only bring out the casual look of the floral top, you also look quite chic, simple and comfortable. That’s the whole essence of casual.

Denim

Denim cuts across all seasons and summer is not going to be left out. This summer, you’ll see more denim shorts, jeans and capris. Denim is universally known as depicting ease and casual, so having it as your go-to piece for the summer will help you hit the right style mark.

Keep it simple with a nice t-shirt or just to add some fun to it, wear a slogan tee – it always makes a good read. Finish off with a nice pair of sunglasses to perfect the look.

Chiffon tops and dresses

Lovely, light and flowing chiffon is the true definition of summer. It’s fun and playful. It’s also a big plus when you have the heat wave to worry about. Chiffon tops and dresses are trendy and casual, and quite feminine too. Style it with a long necklace to add more charm to your style. You can wear your chiffon top over a pair of shorts to make your outfit look more relaxed.

Striped pieces

Effortless yet stylish; striped clothing makes any ensemble look casual. This is a piece that should be included while you are styling outfits this summer. Take a striped sleeveless top and layer it over a nice pair of jeans. This makes you look laid back and captures the real essence of casual chic.

To complete the look, you can wear a gold chain to give it an even more chic look.

Candy coloured outfits

Although your choice of clothes plays a big role in how you can pull off the casual chic look, your choice of colour can also make a huge difference.

This summer try adding more candy colours into your outfits. Colours like pale yellow, light blue and peach look great in the summer. Feel free to add a heavy dose of white to the mix as well. White can help tone down dark colours and give you that casual feel.

What do you think of these style tips? Are you a fan of the casual chic look?

Dubai Summer Holiday

If you follow me on Instagram or Twitter, then you would know I am currently in Dubai with the family for a summer vacation. We got here some days ago. It has been lovely so far. We have a huge apartment to ourselves at the lovely DoubleTree by Hilton Jumeirah Beach, with an amazing view and a private beach! I couldn’t ask for anything more. It is a perfect home away from home with huge rooms, a washing machine, massive fridge/freezer, kitchen, everything!

Coming from good old Cheshire, with the summer weather reaching a maximum of 30 degrees on a good hot day, Dubai’s weather reaching above 40 degrees is something. It is a good change from what we are used to so we are trying to make the most of it.

I am planning to hit the beach later today with kiddies and have been sorting out my swimwear essentials.  I did a lot of holiday shopping before we took off, so we could come prepared. I rarely have the opportunity to rock a good bikini in a 40 degrees weather, so I went all out shopping for some luxury ladies swimwear and some other summer beach holiday essentials.

I shopped Fat Face for the first time, and I got the hat and slippers, which have been so useful. I also got some last-minute suncream at a Boots shop because I forgot to carry mine.

I love Dubai so much. This is my third time visiting this amazing country, I was here last December for Christmas, and I know I would be visiting again. It is one of those countries you just don’t get tired of, for me anyway.

We will be visiting another country in the Middle East in the next few days before heading home, so it is going to be a chilled but busy week. I will be posting as regular as I can but the timing may be a little different, so look out.

Any plans for the summer? Have you visited Dubai before?
