Blog Engagement v. Blog Followers? Which Is More Important?

Should you invest more in increasing blog engagement or blog followers?

When I was growing my blog, all I thought about was having a long list of followers who would read my blog posts. All this while I worked so hard trying to increase my blog followers that I overlooked the importance of blog engagement.

Your blog followers are people who are devoted readers of your blog. Most times they are the ones who subscribe to your email list to get notified when you have a new blog post.

While blog followers are those who look out for your next blog post, blog engagement is how your readers engage with your blog post. There are many ways your readers can engage with your blog. The most prominent way is when they drop a comment on your blog post. Another way is when they share your blog post on social media.

Both blog followers and blog engagement are important for the growth of your blog. In fact, they work hand-in-hand to help you achieve this goal. You can’t have blog engagement without blog followers and if you don’t have blog followers then you won’t be able to get engagement on your blog.

But which is more important?

As a blogger, we’re made to think that having more blog followers is what will make you a successful blogger. And that’s a wrong way of looking at your blogging journey.

It’s the power of the influence you have over your readers that makes you a successful blogger. Building that strong connection with your audience is what makes your blogging efforts worth your while.

That is why I believe that every blogger should focus on building blog engagement over blog following. Shifting my energy to creating quality blog engagement helped me immensely as a blogger. Here’s why:

  1. Focusing on blog engagement help me create a strong bond with my audience

While a lot of bloggers see their followers as a number in their vanity metrics, I see them as friends I can have a lovely chat with at a coffee shop. That’s why I ensure that I inspire conversation with my audience. That helps me get to know them more as they get to learn about me from my blog posts.

  1. Brands look at blog engagement and not exactly your following

You may have a large reader base but if no one even wants to interact with you, then what’s the point of such a large following? Brands have caught on to the sneaky tricks of some bloggers who try to increase their blog followers without investing in creating quality engagement in their blog post. Brands know that the power of one’s influence is how they’re able to get their audience engaged. And that’s where they’ve got their eyes on.

  1. Engagement helps me know exactly what my audience wants

You want to keep creating quality content for your readers. What better way to know what they want than to actually ask them!

When my readers engage with my blog posts, I know right off the bat their problems, pain points and struggles. This helps me come back with a blog post that will help them with just that.

  1. Plan your content

Blogging is not about writing anything that comes to your mind. Serious bloggers plan their content to the last before they even think of publishing. This because every blog post they publish is done with a specific purpose in mind.

Create an outline for every blog idea that comes to mind. Do detailed research into the topic to help give your readers great value when they’re reading your blog post. Have an editorial calendar where you can plan out which blog post should be published and when. And most importantly, stay consistent.

  1. Have a compelling call to action

Blogging should be like having a one-on-one communication with your readers. But such conversation must not be one-sided. The best blogs are those that engage the audience. And the best way to engage your audience is to cleverly use your call to action.

A call to action is a line that tells your reader what you would like them to do now that they have finished reading your blog post, for example like, share, comment or subscribe to your email list.

Some bloggers forget to add a call to action in their blog posts. But serious bloggers don’t dare skip it.

  1. Build your email list

No matter what stage you are as a blogger, building your email list a must. The email list is a powerful way to constantly keep in touch with your readers and inform them of your offers or when a new blog post is published.

Those subscribed to your email list get to read your newsletters where you can build a closer and deeper relationship with your subscribers.

  1. Promote promote promote

Writing your blog post is just half the battle when trying to accelerate your blogging career. You need to put in 2 times more effort into promoting your blog posts than you do writing the content of your blog post.

Promoting your blog post increases the visibility of your blog posts thereby bringing fresh readers to see your blog post every time.

Share your blog post on social media, forums and groups where your target audience hang out.  But remember that you have to make sure that you don’t spam the platforms where you share your blog posts.

  1. Be you….always

This is the most important part in accelerating your blogging career: be yourself. Your readers will love you for who you are. So be 100 percent authentic. Copying someone else’s style will never take you far. Don’t be afraid to show off your awesomeness.

10 Questions/Phrases Bloggers Are Sick of Answering

I have a favourite writing corner. Most people call it the ‘Writers’ Coven’ but I call it my refuge place. Once I have a writer’s block, I retire to my refuge place, which is our guest bedroom on the topfloor. It has a window in the ceiling and the bright sunlight slowly re-energizes my writing purpose.

Surviving as a full-time blogger, freelance writer, author and blogger outreach girl is hard work. Most days I find myself working past midnight, only to wake as early as 6am with the kids. Operating on less than 6 hours sleep is no fun. So you can imagine why some cliques does get to me. Here are some annoying questions I am sick of hearing as a writer:
So you are a blogger, have you published any book?
Yes I am a blogger/writer, and no, not every blogger MUST publish a book.  However I have published a book not because I am sick of hearing this question but because I genuinely had a few things to say and I wanted to reach a bigger audience.
According to most folks, you are not a successful blogger/writer until you get a book published. It doesn’t matter if you write a 5,000 words article published on Huffington Post or The Telegraph. If you are yet to write a BOOK, you are likely not to be taken seriously as a writer. I believe that is overrated. We are sick of people giving us yardstick before we can be who we are. Writing a book is great, it gives you credibility, you can reach a wider audience and you earn some extra cash, but you don’t have to publish a book to be a successful blogger or writer.
Do you write every day?
Yes I TRY to write every day because I realised the more I write, the easier the words flow. But it is not the frequency of the write-up that matters but the depth of the write-up. Writing every day is a good habit if your writing improves as you go along but it is not a must.
How much do you make as a writer/blogger?
I understand many people find it bizzare that bloggers make money from blogging. Many still do not understand the whole blogging as a career thing, and I get that because I find many careers bizzare too. Like being paid crazy money to kick a ball into a net, I can never understand that.
So what is your job?
Blogging/writing is a Job. A REAL job. The digital marketing industry is currently contributing heavily to the British’s economy, so it is definitely a job. I see it as a full-time job anyway. I write and get paid, so it is a job. Why do I have to repeat myself so many times?

Did you study ‘Writing’?
Yes and NO. Call it a passion and you are right. Call it an art and I give you a thumbs up but don’t think it is purely a craft that needs to be learnt. I studied Acounting as a first degree, and International Human Relations as a Master’s degree. I then fell in love with fashion styling, and studied that at London College of Style. All three degrees/diploma have nothing to do with Writing/Blogging. Writing is a talent. It can be refined but CAN’T be learnt. You either have it or you don’t.
How much have you made as a writer?
I am not J.K. Rowling…….YET. I might not make millions from it but I don’t need you to remind me of that. I also should not have to justify why I am a blogger/writer, or disclose my financial information to anyone. Some questions are just too intrusive and this is one of them.

So you are a Writer? My Grandmother is a Writer too.
I know what you are trying to do. No, not everybody can be a blogger/writer, even if many think they are or can. But well done to your Grandmother.
 So you write novels?
Erm….NO! I don’t write novels. Not everybody that writes has to write fiction. There are different genres and we tend to concentrate on the one most suitable to us. I prefer reading and writing non fiction.
When did you start writing?

Since I could hold a pencil. Any more questions?

Writing must be soo easy for you?
It is very easy for me because I have been writing all my life. Even before I started blogging, I had journals and diaries in real life. Writers put in effort in crafting out piece. It is a duty that needs focus, brainstorming and research. It can be fun and easy depending on the writer.
