My Love for Fashion Events

*Collaborative post.

My love for fashion events has been on for as long as I can remember. I remember when I initially started blogging, and the dream of attending fashion week all over the world. I was reading lots of purely fashion blogs then and they all attended these top fashion events, and I wanted to do the same so bad. The likes of E! and Rachel Zoe’s show (I love her) didn’t help as well as that was all they seem to talk about. Back then, it felt as if I had to attend these fashion shows before I could be an established fashion blogger.

In the early days of blogging, I stumbled upon a little fashion show in an Essex shopping mall and that sealed my dream for me. We were visiting family and friends and shopping in a mall in Essex. We didn’t even know there was a fashion show going on until we stumbled upon the mini stage. It was fun to watch and I even got some lovely pictures I happy to show off. I also got to see some members of the Little Mix Girl Group and Ashley Banjo from the Diversity group. Too bad I didn’t get a photo of them.

If you have been reading Fashion and Style Police since 2012, you may recognise these images.

The fashion show was in Lakeside Shopping Mall Essex and it was all about showing off the new pieces and accessories on the high street. That has been my first and only fashion show. I haven’t lost interest in attending a fashion show or going for fashion week but my enthusiasm. has reduced.  I know I will attend many fashion weeks in the future but the timing and situation has to be right. Attending Paris Fashion Week or Milan Fashion Week in a private jet charter would be so amazing. That is the goal.

I have attended many fashion events before Fashion and Style Police was born. I was a guest at the Street Style Bus Fashion Event some time ago, and that was so much fun. It is always needed to see the fashion pieces and accessories in flesh since I write about them so much. Seeing the collections before the hit the stores is also great. It makes me feel like a fashion insider.

Olivia Palermo Covers Cosmopolitan Magazine UK June 2017

Olivia Palermo Covers Cosmopolitan Magazine UK June 2017 and she looks smoking hot on it!

I think this is a very pretty summery cover. The cover girl is looking so beautiful, I love her hair and makeup, and the colourful outfit.

In my early blogging days, I was a dedicated follower of Olivia Palermo’s website. I loved her personal style and enjoyed keeping up with her various looks. I have not been on her blog in years, but I still see her work around of social media, and I admire her dedication. She has made a business out of getting dressed, and is very successful at it. This Style Icon is the definition of a Girl Boss!

I would love to read Palermo’s interview with Cosmopolitan, I would love to find out how she made a business out of getting dressed.

Here are a some excerpts from her interview with Cosmo –

Childhood Struggles

“You know, everything was a bit harder for me because I grew up with a learning disability. I don’t want to go into details but… what was wonderful is that people can be very creative in different ways. And we [she refers to her childhood friend Jonathan Simkhai, a designer, to whom she was close to at school] really strived to be creative and that really evolved as we got older… and not necessarily in school.”

I didn’t know Olivia had a learning disability. I am happy to see she has not allowed that stop her.

Fashion Week Schedule

“Honestly, my schedule is so tight. I have a show on the hour every hour, and appointments. So my priority is the designers and the collections. Of course, it’s nice to change once in a while, and support the designers, if you can, by changing, but there’s not always enough time in the day.”

I can imagine how stressful fashion week must be for her. I don’t envy that part at all.

How to Dress for London Fashion Week

I love watching fashion shows. The designers work so hard to create amazing outfits. It’s such an honour to attend fashion shows and have the opportunity to view their creations firsthand. I have attended quite a few in my lifetime but I am yet to attend any in London. I got a few invites this year but it just didn’t work out for me to attend, but I am hoping to attend some next year.
In the midst of the hustle and bustle of the London Fashion Week going on at the moment, and all gorgeous and creative designs, what’s the most appropriate outfit to wear I hear you ask? This can be really tricky as you want to look great, stand out but at the same time stay within the theme of the fashion show. You also want your outfit to be practical. I know I would want to dress up in a stylish but functional outfit.
Interestingly, there are different views on how you should dress for fashion week, if you are lucky enough to get an invite. Some are of the opinion that it is best to wear an outfit created by the designer especially if they invited you to the show. The idea is to lend support and solidarity to the designer who invited you. Some say it’s best to dress in a way that does not overshadow the outfits that will be on display in the fashion show. So it all depends on how you see it.

Fashion week is all about the outfits that will be showcased and they should take the center stage and not your dressing. But it would make sense to stand out. I think it’s so much better to stay true to your personal brand. It’s so much easier to be yourself. Everyone has their own unique style and it’s a shame to keep it hidden.

There’s really no right or wrong answer when it comes to dressing for fashion week, so long as it is stylish and practical, you can never go wrong. With all this in mind, I thought I’d put together a little guide that will help you decide on the type of clothes you should wear for fashion week.
Stick with comfort
When it comes to styling, comfort is key. A typical fashion show hardly ends at the runway. There are also other activities that take place before and after the show. So, it is wise to wear comfortable clothing. Uncomfortable clothing ruins your confidence. Starting from shoes, although it’s important to appear chic, wear shoes that give you some foot room and those that you are able to walk in freely. Stay away from tight clothing or any piece of clothing that will cause discomfort for long hours. The golden rule when it comes to dressing for comfort is “less is more”. So, don’t overdo the accessories.
Stay casual chic
When in doubt, casual’s got your back. Casual gives you the air of someone who is confident, laid back and sociable. Black is my preferred colour for press events, so a black piece would be an ideal piece for me to wear to London Fashion Week. Styling this with a pair of jeans – preferably skinny jeans would be spot on.  You could also go for some colour if that is more right up your street. Some colour could make you attractive and alluring.
Bold with an edge
This may seem like a complete opposite to the casual vibe, but it doesn’t hurt to be daring yet stylish in fashion week. This powerful look will definitely make you stand out if that is the look you are going for. This look is characterized by clothing that make bold statements like a leather jacket over a simple t-shirt and black jeans. This will give you a confident edginess. Finish this off with a pair of motorcycle boots or a pair of stilettos.
