Nykhor Paul, a South Sudanese Model has had enough. She is tired of apologizing for her blackness.
In a recent Instagram post, the super model shares her thoughts on racism in the fashion industry:
Dear white people in the fashion world!
Please don’t take this the wrong way but it’s time you people get your shit right when it comes to our complexion! Why do I have to bring my own makeup to a professional show when all the other white girls don’t have to do anything but show up WTF! Don’t try to make me feel bad because I am blue-black. Its 2015, go to Mac, Bobbi Brown, Makeup Forever, Iman cosmetic, Black Opal, even Lancôme and Clinique carried them plus so much more. There’s so much options our there for dark skin tones today. A good makeup artist would come prepare and do their research before coming to work because often time you know what to expect especially at a show! Stop apologizing it’s insulting and disrespectful to me and my race it doesn’t help, seriously! Make an effort at least! That goes for NYC, London, Milan, Paris and Cape Town plus everywhere else that have issues with black skin tones. Just because you only book a few of us doesn’t mean you have the right to make us look ratchet. I’m tired of complaining about not getting book as a black model and I’m definitely super tired of apologizing for my blackness!!!! Fashion is art, art is never racist it should be inclusive of all not only white people, shit we started fashion in Africa and you modernize and copy it! Why can’t we be part of fashion fully and equally?

Well said and why should one suffer after all.. I love that color and I love what I am .. So should everyone else.. Love thy body!
Great post and so well said.i love the color and I love mine too.. So should everyone, Love thy body !
Exactly. We should all be able to feel comfortable in our skin, regardless of our colour.
No one should have to apologise for their sex, gender of the colour of their skin. Good on Nykhor for speaking her mind and standing up for what she believes in xx

Exactly. Thanks Erin.
Reblogged this on The Pretty Canary.
Amen She said that with class!
Yea she did. Ha.
Amen to that! 🙂
This kind of thing makes my blood boil. How awful that it’s gotten so bad that she needs to put it on instagram in the first place. And as for the MUA who don’t show up with the range of make up, how unprofessional is that? It’s like a photographer showing up with the wrong lens for a job – it just wouldn’t be accepted.
Hopefully, now she’s spoken out there will be apologises and major changes!

So very unprofessional. MAC, Bobbi Brown, Black Opal and many more have makeup shades for the black skin so not sure why the MUA did not have this covered.
OMG. Explosive expression of a sensitive nature. They all deserve equal treatment, anywhere they work
Yea. Everyone deserves to be treated fairly and equally.
Nobody should be made to feel uncomfortable in their own skin, consideration is key here. I feel like white people are penalized a lot though, this is especially common in the music industry. I think it’s easier now to cater to everyone, especially with the major breakthroughs that have been made as of late. BIG UP WINNIE HARLOW!! Peace and Love xo
Spot on. Thanks for stopping by.
Thanks! And I forgot to add, bless her! I hope she never has to be put through that again.
I think women of any skin color can be beautiful and successful and should be treated equally for sure! Thanks for sharing this post!

Thanks for reading Prudence.
She’s right to shout out, it is just unprofessional on the part of the make-up artists and inexcusable. No excuses when there are so many brands out there.
Yes I agree as well. It’s not acceptable.
Wow, this is deep.Thought the likes of Naomi Campbell and Alek has won this battle already ? Lupita is almost the same colour as the lady and she is a brand Ambassador to Lancome, why can’t they just buy products like that, so many brands are making products that work for all skin tone.
I know things will get better. We are all equal and our rights should be too. Thanks for sharing Stella.

So deep Moji. Guess the war is still on in the fashion industry.
Ugh! I feel her pain and she’s right on. I cant stand lazy makeup artist, a true one who wants to walk in fashion, should be well trained in the various skin tones and should definitely call up or have their agency call up each job to find out what models are likely to be there so he/she comes prepared. Failing that, they should be prepared, and bring for all skin tones to prepare for last min changes. Telling a model in 2015 what Iman was told in the 70s, i.e Bring Yr Own Makeup, is just downright shameful!!!
So shameful. I really can’t believe she was told that. Really?
BEAUTIFUL POST. COLOUR IS NEVER A LIMITATION. BLACK IS BEAUTIFUL
Yes it is. Thanks Osime.
