Camping Essentials This Summer 2016

Us in Camp

The last time I went camping was in 2007. It was a long time ago, but I still remember every bit of the camp experience. We were about 10 of us, all girls, we met up with thousands of others, from all over the country, and we had a rough but amazing 3 weeks together. I still cannot understand how I survived those 3 weeks, I fell seriously sick afterwards and went back home with all sorts of skin infections, but I won’t change my experience for anything in the world.

The 3 weeks camping was hard, but the first week was the hardest. I remember waking up after the first night, feeling very sick because I slept out in the open without a tent for the first time in my life. It felt horrible sleeping on the bare floor, with no shelter, and that experience made me realise what homeless people were going through every day of their lives, and how lucky I was to have a roof over my head.

The following weeks were better. We sorted out the shelter issue which was a massive improvement, and we kind of just went with the flow of things.I learnt a lot about myself during those 3 weeks, and I got to know my girlfriends a lot more as well. It was a great experience I would never forget it.

It is summer time, and I know many of us will be looking to go camping. So this post is just about me reminiscing and reminding you of some camping essentials you should not forget.

Halfords Camping Guide 2016

Camping Tents

Going camping without a tent is not smart. Trust me, I have been there, and I will never try it again. The first night we spent without a tent was horrific! For a hassle free camping trip, you will be needing a tent, and the great part about this, is there is a camping tent for every budget. So you should be able to find a reasonably priced tent. Just make sure you pick the right size for your group and your belongings. Also make sure your tent is waterproof, so you are sure to stay warm and dry.

You should also  ensure you have all the camping tools you will be needing like a good carabiner, which is a camping staple.

Sleeping Bags & Pillow

Sleeping bags and pillows are also camping essentials. They help aid a good night sleep, and sleeping bags are so compact and easy to carry. You can go with your duvet for maximum comfort if you prefer that, but bear in mind they take more room.

Insect Repellent

Like I said, I went back with all sorts of insect bites and skin infections. If I had an insect repellant I won’t have suffered half as much as I did. Make sure you go with one.

Waist/Hip Bag

As you can see in the pictures, most of us have on a waist bag. In there, we store keys, money, bank cards, phones, and any valuables we want close to us. Those bags are very handy, so get one each before you go camping, that way you can even sleep with all your valuables on you.

Water Carrier

Most of us had a water carrier as well. They came in handy when we had to go for long walks. They are definitely camping essentials.

Anti-bacterial Hand Gel

These hand gels come in handy when you are unable to wash your hands immediately. They are a life saver so remember to pick one up before you go.

How to Walk in Heels Like a Pro

I keep getting comments about how high some of my shoes are, and how I manage to walk in them, so this post is a long time coming….

Most woman wants to achieve that confident, sexy and elegant look. What better way to make this happen than by wearing high heels! A beautiful pair of high heels always adds that touch of class to every outfit – even a simple pair of jeans and a t-shirt, like the Fashion & Style Police t-shirt, for example.

However, having a pair of great-looking heels is not enough, you need to know how to walk in them. Knowing exactly how to walk in them is the key to achieving that bold feminine strut. So, I’m going to give you some tips on how you can walk in heels and unleash that confident, sexy and elegant woman.

Start off comfortable
If you’re not used to walking in heels or it’s your first time walking in them, don’t jump into stilettos straight away. Start with short 1 inch chunky heels. Chunky heels will give you more surface space to walk on. That’s why wedges are the easiest to walk in. Once you’ve gotten used to the feel of walking in them, graduate to kitten heels. Kitten heels have short but slender heels. From there, you can move up to 2-3 inch heels, then 4-5 inches. Usually, the taller you are, the more uncomfortable you are wearing higher heels. A rule of thumb is when you notice your knees bending at a particular height of heels, drop an inch lower.

Focus on the 2 Ps
Posture and poise are the things you must pay attention to while walking in heels. These are what will bring that feminine elegance to the fore and prevent any pain that may arise from bad posture.
Stand straight. Ensure your spine is long but relaxed. Your shoulders should be wide and not slouching. Tense your abs, slightly raise your chin and make sure you are looking straight ahead.
Never bring your chest forward in the name of standing straight and don’t push your bum backward. That will look unnatural and hurt your posture.

Aim for a smooth landing
Now it’s time to take your first step. Maintain your straight posture. Put your best foot forward right in front of the other foot and repeat with the other foot as if you are walking on an imaginary straight line. This will give you that famous catwalk.
As you are landing on your feet, make sure you land heel first then gradually distribute your weight to your toes. This will prevent exerting too much pressure on the balls of your feet. At first you may have the temptation of walking on the tips of your toes but avoid doing so. Walking on tip-toes will make your toes sore and cause your knees to bend and that won’t look classy at all.

Crepe Dress

Work your hips
Remember Shakira’s hit song “Hips Don’t Lie”? She was right!
Allow your hips to lead your legs. Moving your hips forward will control your whole leg starting from thighs down to the rest of your leg as you land on your heel and distribute your weight to your toes. Focusing on the movement of your hip, keep your kegs straight. Your legs must never be bent while walking. Working on that hip movement gives you that sexy side-to-side strut showing off your curves.

Move with the rhythm
Usually, walking in heels will make you walk in short strides, making you walk slower than in other shoes. So, you will take more steps than usual.
As you get used to walking in your heels, you will notice a nice rhythm forming. Be conscious of that rhythm and let your whole body follow it. Feel free to gently sway your arms from side to side. This will make you look more graceful as you walk.

Practice, Practice, Practice
Practice makes perfect! No one was born a natural when it comes to walking in heels. It takes steady practice. Practice walking in your heels at home. Try walking on different surfaces to get used to how it feels, but always make sure you take breaks from time to time to ensure you rest your feet.

I hope you find these tips useful. Do you have any tips to share? Drop me a comment, lets chat.

Product Review – Jimmy Choo Illicit Perfume*

If you have been reading Fashion and Style Police for a while, you will know how much I love perfumes. I use to be a perfume hoarder freak, with over 10 bottles at a time, until I went into recovery, lol. I am a lot better now, and quite happy with only 5 bottles at a time.

Jimmy Choo wowed me with the previous Jimmy Choo perfume. So I was very happy to receive this Illicit perfume by Jimmy Choo as a gift last Christmas.

The Jimmy Choo Illicit perfume was released August 2015. It comes in a 40, 60 and 100 ml Eau de Parfum. I have a bit to say about it, but before I dive into the review, here is what Jimmy Choo has to say about this perfume:

The Illicit perfume is designed for women who are tempting, seductive, risk-taking and totally in control. This fragrance embodies the daring spirit of a woman who is hypnotic, attractive and living life to the fullest. It is a modern floral, created by the perfumer; Anne Filpo. It starts with frizzy notes leading to the floral heart and the warm, honey-amber base. Ginger and bitter orange open the composition. The heart consists of rose and jasmine sambac, laid on the base of honey-amber accord and sandalwood.

– Sandra Choi, Creative Director Jimmy Choo.

Here are my thoughts on this perfume:

PROS

  1. It is a light, feminine, sensual fragrance, which I love. It is soft enough for day time wear, and great to rock in the summer season.
  2. It is long-lasting. It stays on for a few hours.
  3. I love the design of the bottle. It is simple but so chic.
  4. I like the fact that it comes in various sizes – 40, 60 & 100ml, hence various prices. A 40ml bottle goes for £42, 60ml goes for £54 and a 100ml goes for £78.
  5. This fragrance is readily available online and in many other departmental stores.

CONS

  1. I wish the fragrance stays on longer. It disappears after a couple of hours.

Overall, I love this fragrance. I think it is fab, and I will definitely use it again. I recommend it to any perfume lover looking for a light fragrance to use this summer.
