How to be a Girl Boss

The term “girl boss” was created by Sophia Amoruso, the founder of Nasty Gal an online retail store specializing in fashion clothing for young women, which is currently being filed for bankruptcy. But let us forget that is happening for now, and just focus on how to be a Girl Boss.

Sophia Amoruso also wrote a book with the same name #GIRLBOSS, which became a best seller. I had the privilege of finally reading the book some months ago, and I was blown away by Sophia Amoruso’s hustle. She is the real Girl Boss.

Her fascinating success story is one of selling used clothes on eBay in 2006 to owning a $100 million retail business in 2014. Sophia is indeed a hustle and I admire her hustle regardless of whatever is going on with her business currently.

Here are some things you can learn from her and get your business going.

  1. Do what you love

If you want to be a girl boss, your focus has to be on what gives you the most joy and satisfaction. You’re more likely to succeed in doing something that you love than doing something just for the pay check. Love is a powerful motivator. If you do something you love, you’re sure to hang on until the end.

  1. Wake up early everyday

The way you start your day will affect the rest of your day. Girl bosses know that starting the day early will increase productivity as the most important tasks are done before noon. And from getting most of your work done early, you’ll also have enough time to enjoy the most important meal of the day: breakfast. Late risers usually skip breakfast as they have to quickly rush through the day to get work done. Early risers are girl bosses. I was once a dedicated early riser. I need to go back to being that.

  1. Efficiently manage your time

As a girl boss you’re aware that every second counts and that time wasted can never be gotten back. You need to learn how to organize your day and stick to a daily schedule. I know this can be hard on some days because I sometimes struggle to keep to my schedule but a schedule help keep the focus on what needs to be done. Knowing what to do and when to do it will help you work smart and efficiently.

  1. Take control of your finances

How will you be a successful girl boss if you take control of your finances? Track your income and your expenses. Identify where all your money is going to and how you’re spending your money. Are you spending your money on important things? Is what you’re spending money on going to help you grow your business? The answer to those questions will help you know if you’re putting your money to good use. Never be afraid to explore opportunities that will help you increase your level of income. The idea is to make more money than you spend.

  1. Put in hard work and dedication

Nothing good comes easy. If you want the best out of your life and business then you need to be ready to work hard for it. Put in your best in whatever task that comes before you.

There’s one thing girl bosses do that makes them stand out. Unlike others who would “slave” through their work, girl bosses actually love working hard. To them hard work is not something you tick off your to-do list. It’s a process. If you want to succeed you should not only work hard but love working hard.

  1. Believe in the power of positive thinking

You have the power to create your own reality but it all starts with intently focusing on the positive. If you want good things to happen to you then you need to first believe it will happen and gravitate your thoughts towards it actually happening. The law of attraction is powerful and girl bosses know how to make good use of it.

How Free Writing Can Unleash your Creativity

As a freelance writer or blogger there are times we experience moments when we don’t have the inspiration to write. We experience writer’s block or are simply not motivated to put pen to paper (or fingers to keyboard).

Although such moments come and go, it’s not something that should be encouraged. In fact cultivating the habit and discipline to write everyday can completely change your life and improve your writing.

Free writing is an incredible practice that unleashes the creative ideas lodged within you as well as gets you in the mood of writing.

What is free writing?

Free writing is basically a writing activity where you allow yourself to write out whatever comes to your mind without stopping, editing or rationalizing what flows from your mind. The aim behind free writing is to uncover those thoughts or ideas that you hide within you, far away from your conscious mind.

Free writing doesn’t care about structure, efficiency or accuracy in grammar, or the right choice of words. It focuses more on the process of unleashing your creativity or unearthing those thoughts or perspectives you don’t voice out. Most times you bury your creative side by over thinking about what you write. Free writing liberates you from anything that would hold you back from freely expressing what you have in your mind. Free writing gives you a unique voice.

How free writing works

What makes free writing so effective with unleashing your creativity is that it completely prevents you from over thinking what you write. Most writers will edit as they write or pause for a long time trying to come up with the right word, phrase or sentence structure. This usually slows you down or discourages you from going any further. Since you’re not allowed to rationalize what you write, the results of your free writing exercise don’t reveal what you expect. In essence it allows your creativity to roam freely, which is what we need to shine like a diamond that we are.

Free writing helps reveal your writing voice and inspires you with ideas and raw materials you can use for your writing projects. Free writing pushes your unconscious side to reveal new thoughts, ideas or perspectives that you never realized you kept within you.

How to free write

Free writing has only one rule: write fast without thinking. This will give you the freedom to allow yourself to flow with the stream of creativity. This is because writing fast will ensure that your hand writes (or types) faster than your brain can think. This takes your writing out of the zone of your consciousness and permits whatever you had within you to take the lead.

To get started, you need to follow these steps:

  1. Time yourself so that you stay focused on writing. 10 minutes is enough time to free write.
  2. Write quickly without stopping until your time is up.
  3. Let the first word that comes to your mind prompt you to start writing. Don’t think about the right opening sentence. Just work with what comes to your mind and write about it. Even if you have no idea what to write about, write about not having an idea to write about.
  4. Don’t worry yourself about grammar or spelling mistakes. Messy is allowed. What’s important is the process of writing, not how or what you write.
  5. Don’t judge, critique or edit your writing. Don’t allow anything to interrupt your flow. All the editing and fine-tuning can be done later.

At the end of the free writing exercise, you’ll be surprised about the deep insights you’ll find in your writing. You’ll be inspired with new ideas on what to write. And most of all, you’ll unleash your creativity.

Do you free write?

Why I Won’t Publish Income Reports

Hot Chocolate

A quick disclaimer, this post is not about any blogger in particlularly. It is a simple opinion post. I hope you enjoy the read.

Income reports have become a thing in the blogging world and I kind of get why. Many people still believe pro blogging is no job, while some find it hard to understand how bloggers make money. So I get why income reports have become so popular. And I get why some bloggers like to shout from the rooftops about how much they make. It feels so good to make a living from your dream career/job. I can still remember the feeling I got when I published my first sponsored post, or when I got my first paid freelance job. I still get that same feeling everytime a new fab opportunity lands in my inbox, so it never really goes away. Working for yourself, doing what you love is a dream, so it is worth screaming about.

I enjoy reading income report posts. I find them very informative and interesting. It is always good to read about various ways bloggers make money, and how much they actually make in a month.

I would love to read more income reports, especially from the mega big bloggers, but I doubt that would ever happen. I guess the figures would be too crazy to write down.

Layering

I would love to publish income reports. It would be a nice way to show off my figures and motivate other bloggers, it would also help me set income deadlines and keep me focused. But the cons of publishing income reports outweighs the pros massively for me, so you won’t be reading an income report post anything soon on Fashion and Style Police, and I will tell you why.

Privacy

I love reading other bloggers’ income reports, but I am way too private to publish mine. I think it is just one of those things to be left offline. I won’t publish my payslip if I was working for someone else, so why should I publish my income report?

Real Life People

Privacy and real life people are my main reasons for not publishing an income report. People I know in my real life (that didn’t I play on my laptop for a living) will become too aware of my financial situation and that never helps.

Unnecessary Pressure

Publishing my monthly income reports would put unnecessary pressure on me. I have monthly goals I aim to smash every month, and that includes my finances, but putting them online is another level. I know I would be under a lot of pressure and that is pressure I don’t need.

Red Christmas Jumper

These are my reasons for not publishing income reports on Fashion and Style Police. I respect other bloggers who are bold enough to publish theirs, it is just not for me.

What are your thoughts? Do you publish or plan to income reports on your blog?

Please share your thoughts in the comment section below.

Thank you for reading.
