Is Fashion Turning to Craft

I’ve always seen fashion as a reflection of your sense of what you term beautiful.

All of the greatest fashion designers who have ever lived on the face of this earth created each piece of clothing with the inspiration that came from events that happened, people they’ve met or places they have been to. They used their talent to paint a picture of a man or woman with personality and character. Fashion designers spoke through the clothes they create.

But where does it all come from?

Everyday you wake up in the morning and mix and match your clothes together just to find the right ensemble to make you feel confident enough to step out of your house and start a new day. Who doesn’t want to look good, right?

But the more I studied the fashion industry and the dynamics behind it, I started to realize that there’s more depth to just putting items of clothing together.

Have you ever sat down to listen to what fashion commentators say about a fashion designer once their models have left the runway? They analyze every single piece, touching different aspects of it from the colour palette the designer used, the clever cutting, the genius behind their choice of fabric and even the mood the pieces vibrate.

There are even blogs nowadays where people give their own comments on the latest fashion. Whenever I make my Outfit Posts, I also drop my own perception of the outfit I chose to wear for the day. In a nutshell, everything that comes with your outfit has its meaning and defines your style.

Fashion stylists have a special place in the fashion industry. They know exactly how to put together the right items to create the desired effect. For example, there are some clothes that can either flatter your assets or hide them from view. There are also outfits that can make you look taller, shorter, fatter, or slimmer than you naturally are.

We would say that such people know the laws behind optical illusions, but they know their craft. They know the weight of the effect clothes can have on your style and the way people perceive you.

We’re slowly moving towards an age where nothing goes to chance or mere guessing anymore. There are angles, dimensions, rules, laws, perceptions, theories and history behind fashion now. People no longer observe fashion and let it just simply slide by. People study fashion and everything associated with it.

A stitch, cut or trimming can alter the balance of your style. If you choose the wrong outfit in the wrong season or you feel you could carry over an item of clothing, you need to think carefully about it. You need to be precise with fashion.

Does this mean that just because fashion is a craft no one else can get it right? Absolutely not! Fashion is also born from inspiration. You may experience a spark that will unleash your most magnificent style. There’s really no limit to how far you can go.

What are your thoughts on this? Do you think fashion is a craft?

I wanted to be an Interior Designer

Once upon a time, I wanted to be an Interior Designer. I played around with the idea for months, and even started an online interior designing course to help me achieve my dream. But I never got around to being one. The dream kind of frizzled away, just like my dream to be a Fashion Stylist(which I also studied for), and my dream to be an Accountant/Human Resources Consultant, which I studied at the University for 5 years in total for both degrees. These dreams and more frizzled out, giving room for my current career, which I love by the way.

Sometimes I do catch myself thinking about my dream of becoming an Interior Designer, especially when I am watching TV programmes like Homes Under the Hammer (I use to watch it every morning at some point), and wonder how my life would have been if I really became one. However I am very happy with the career I have chosen and how my life is going, so no regrets here.

I guess that explains my love for pretty homes. I am quite homely; I like to spend time in my home, and I like it to look very pretty. If I had an unlimited budget, I would give my house a complete makeover. I have many home improvement ideas in my head but I have to take it one at a time so I get them all done properly.

I have previously written about our garden plans and our need for a big shed. We got one last summer and we are making good use of it. It is a perfect size, so it stores all our junk neatly, and there is space for some more junk, which is good. The only thing I am considering changing is the shed windows. I recently came across Simply Plastics – a supplier of plastic materials and products for over 25 years, and they stock Replacement Acrylic Shed Windows, so I will be exploring that as an option later in the year.

I would also like to improve some of our home decor like cushions, mats and the likes. I plan to do that this Spring.

My favourite part of the house is the bedroom, followed closely by the living room. I spend a good amount of time in both rooms, and I like them looking their best, as well as the rest of the house. So new bed sheets, duvet sets, curtains and the likes will be updated this year.

The kitchen is my busy place, I like all the required kitchen tools and gadgets in place, to make my cooking as fast as possible, and my family fed. I recently got some new kitchen gadgets so I think we are good as far as the kitchen is concerned.

The truth of the matter is we never stop improving our home. Whether it is a new coach, washing machine or a new home office table and chair, the home improvements never really stop, especially when you are a home owner.

Do you enjoying home improvements? Have you ever studied for a career but decided against it?

5 Fashion Stylists’ Secrets

Autumn Layering

Many of us can only dream of employing a Fashion Stylist. Lets face it, they don’t go cheap, so having the likes of Rachel Zoe and others access our wardrobes may only happen in our dreams. I played with the idea of becoming a Fashion Stylist/Personal Shopper for some years. I even took a style course at the London College of Style (LCS) many moons ago. But I decide not to pursue it because it was not working in line with my lifestyle. I still have mad love for fashion and style, which is why you read a lot about them on Fashion and Style Police.

So today I am sharing a 5 Fashion Stylists’ Secrets I picked up along the way –

Flat Tummy

Many women hate their tummies. Our tummies are usually wobbly and unrecognisable once we pop out the a kid or 2. Wearing body con dresses can be a nightmare for many women but it really shouldn’t. There are so many magic girdles that handle this issue brilliantly so you should not have to suffer in silence. Just make sure, you buy the right pair for your size. If it is too tight, you will be super uncomfortable, if it is too loose, it won’t do the job, and if it has visible panels, everyone would now you have a girdle on.

Hairspray

To prevent a boob escape when wearing a boob tube, or to stop your ankle straps from falling down on your shoes, spritz some hairspray on the inside. Hairspray is also useful for preventing static clothes like a silk dress, from clinging. Try spraying a little over your tights to stop a silk dress or skirt from sticking to the tights.

OOTD Cape Dress

Dress down a frock

You can get more wear out of an evening piece by dressing it down with a cardigan or flats, for a laid back look.

Practice makes perfect

Practice makes perfect when it comes to anything and that includes fashion and style. You have to practice walking in heels to be good at it, it doesn’t just happen. You have to practice striking a pose and having a posture, to nail it. Standing with one leg forward, and foot pointed to the camera always works for me when striking a pose. This technique works because your back foot holds your body weight, and it creates the illusion of a slimline figure.

Play around with colours

Black creates an illusion of a slimmer figure so it is worth having a couple of black pieces in various styles. When wearing black or other primary colours, you can always accessorize with other colours to make your outfit pop and look less boring.
