The Must-Haves For Any Nursery

*Collaborative post.

When you’re welcoming a new member of the family into the home, you want to make sure that you got the right space to welcome them. As such, a lot of parents will spend plenty of time preparing the nursery for their new arrival and there are all sorts of things you might get recommendations to put in there. However, when it comes to finding out which are really essential, that can be a little more difficult. Here, we’re going to look at the must-haves, and why they’re so important.

A place for change

Think about the tasks you’re going to spend most of your time on when you’re in the nursery. Naturally, you should expect there to be a lot of diaper changing, so you want to make sure that you have the right place to do it. Diaper stations, or changing tables, should be considered a must. They offer an organized space with enough storage to keep all those changing supplies, not to mention a surface at the right height to make sure that you’re not experiencing any discomfort. A lot of people also choose to get a diaper bin or pail, which is temporary storage to hold any dirty diapers after changing. However, the fact is that using these for even a short time can quickly start to smell the place up.

A place for mom and dad

We’re going to be looking at all the different spaces and assets your baby is going to be making use of when in the nursery, but let’s not forget that the parents need a place to chill in there, as well. To that end, there are several options, with the glider and the rocking chair being the most common of them all. The choice is yours as to which you go with, but you need to make sure it’s a comfortable place that allows you to sit and feed your baby without too much hassle. Furthermore, its ability to provide some kind of rocking or light bouncing motion is going to be important when it comes to helping the baby get off to sleep.

Plenty of storage

You are going to find that, especially through those first months, you are going to have more things than you know how to handle. Your baby will be constantly wearing new clothes throughout the year, and then you have toys, bottles, and all other items that you and your baby need. As such, you need to be sure to leave enough room for storage. Open storage containers that are inaccessible to the baby such a sizeable wicker basket, will be the perfect place to keep your most regularly used items, like blankets, bibs, and other feeding or sleeping accessories. Then you should be sure to have a sizeable dresser for the clothes and more infrequently used items as well.

Where your baby sleeps

The most important thing of all is deciding where your baby goes to sleep. Is it better to get them a crib or bassinet? The former is a little more complex than the latter, but the answer really depends on your needs. Younger children may benefit better from an enclosed crib without drop-down sides that could potentially become a hazard if they get loose. Regardless of which one you choose, however, there are a few priorities you need to ensure. Making sure the baby has enough space to sleep comfortably without giving them the room to roll around is number one. Making sure the crib or bassinet is made of quality materials is crucial, too.

The bedding is important, too

On top of the bed, you have to make sure that the bedding you choose is perfectly designed to be both comfortable and temperature appropriate. Firstly, you have to choose the right mattress. The size is the most important factor, and you shouldn’t be able to fit two fingers down the sides. Another hazard is mattresses that are too soft. If the baby rolls over, this can be a real danger. When it comes to choosing bed sheets and the bedding that goes on top, then be sure to make sure they’re specifically designed to be safe for children. Having the baby sleep outside of a blanket, but simply in some sleepwear can eliminate any dangers associated with loose blankets or covers.

Controlling the climate

With the right bedding and sleepwear, your baby should be able to handle most changes in temperature. A good, safe blanket can be more than enough to protect them from the cold. When it starts warming up, however, you have to ensure that you have the means to cool them down. Air circulators or fans for the nursery do much the same thing. Not only will the circulation of cool air help your baby sleep safely and comfortably, but the gentle white noise that they make can also end up helping them sleep, as well. Just make sure that it doesn’t get too cool in there. Keeping it between 68 degrees F and 72 degrees F is where you want to be.

What about a nightlight?

This is an item that parents will go back and forth on endlessly. If you’re buying a nightlight, you need to know why. The majority of babies aren’t afraid of the dark at all. This tends to be a fear that some kids get as they grow up. If they’re crying in a dark room, it’s because they can’t see their parent near them. What a nightlight can do is that it will allow for a little visibility in the nursery without making it too much brighter. As such, if you need to come into the room without disturbing their sleep, it can be good for that. Of course, it can help offer a little visibility so baby can see you if they wake in the night, too.

With the tips above, you should be ready to ensure your child has many a comfortable night in the safety of their nursery,. When it comes to other things like baby monitors, these aren’t as essential but if you would feel more comfortable incorporating them, it’s worth considering.

Our Favourite Cbeebies Shows

We usually watch Internet tv – so Netflix, Amazon Video and YouTube, but sometimes the kiddies just want to watch regular tv shows on Cbeebies. They have loved watching programmes on Cbeebies since they were babies so it’s nice to see they still want to watch some of the programmes. I control the screen time in our house as much as possible. I don’t like the kids being on their tablets or watching TV for hours. And when they do watch their screens, I like them to be as educative as much as they are entertaining.

Here are some of the programmes the kiddies are watching on Cbeebies –

Waffle The Wonder Dog Cbeebies

The twins love watching this show. It is about a dog called Waffle who is cute but always up to mischief. I think it is one of the new Cbeebies shows. I can’t remember seeing it some years ago, but it is a good one to watch. I have seen a few episodes with the kiddies and I can see why they like watching it. The Waffle Doggy theme song is also quite catchy. I find myself singing along with it.

Topsy and Tim Cbeebies

This show has been around for years now and the twins love it. They can relate with the boy/girl twins, and they find the programme entertaining. I like Topsy and Tim because it is interesting, relatable and very educative. The twins pick up a lot from watching it and they also like the catchy theme song. I must confess I like watching Topsy and Tim as well. I find their family quite entertaining.

Numberblocks Cbeebies

My kids are into numbers which is why they enjoy watching Numberblocks. This show is all about the adventures of 10 friends who enjoy counting on each other in Numberland. It is a great way of introducing chidden to numbers and maths. They pick up various ways of adding mew numbers and I hear they even watch this show at school, which just confirms how educative it is. If you are looking at getting your kids to understand numbers some more, this is a great show for them to watch.

Let’s Play Cbeebies

Another popular Cbeebies programme in our house is Let’s Play. The kiddies enjoy watching this show a lot. They find the many different episodes very entertaining and that is all thanks to the amazing presenters – Sidney Sloane and Rebecca Keatley. They manage to make every episode so much fun. We like it.

Get Well Soon Cbeebies

This show is all about Dr Ranj and friends. It teaches about health and hospitals, and what to expect with healthcare. It is so educative and I am glad my children enjoy watching Get Well Soon on Cbeebies. The Get Well Soon songs are also very catchy. There is a different song for every episode which is so amazing. I wonder how Dr Ranj manages to do all he does.

Free Summer Activities for Kids

School is shutting for summer in about 4 weeks, so it makes sense to have plans for the 6 weeks summer break. Money can be tight for many of us and let’s face, we all need free summer activities to keep the kids busy, regardless of how rich we may be. You can’t be on a beach or in a theme park every day for 6 weeks, so you have to think ahead of how to keep the little ones engaged.

I have lots planned for the summer holidays. As a work from home mum, working at home with the kids can be hard.  I will be planning lots of different activities and be fitting in work around our schedule, so everyone is happy.

Here are some free summer activities for kids we will be making the most of –

Go for walks

We love to go for walks. The kids enjoy being outdoors so we will be going for lots of long walks in our area.  There is something so refreshing about being outdoors especially when the weather is nice. It is a good way to get those steps in and stay fit. Plus, fresh air and sunshine does wonders for our state of mind so make the most of this free activity with the kids this summer.

Make the most of your garden space

Now I know I am so guilty of not making the most of our garden. We don’t use our garden as much as we should and that is going to change this summer. I am going to get fun stuff for the kids to play with and make the garden as child-friendly as possible. It is amazing how running around and playing can keep the kids so busy for hours.

Riding bicycles and scooters

We have spots in our estate where kids can ride their scooters and bicycles safely away from the road and cars. We are going to be visiting the spot quite regularly. I like being able to sit on a bench and watch the kids ride safely. It is another exciting activity for them to do outside the house, and it is free once you have the bike/scooter and safely accessories!

Visit your local playground

I will be visiting the local playground with the kids. Luckily for us, it is not far away from where we live, so we will be making the most of it. The kids enjoying playing on the slides, swings and the other rides. We can easily spend an hour there. A good spot to spend an afternoon.

Baking

For days when the weather is not playing nice, we will be baking indoors. The twins are very into baking now and are interested in the whole process. So, we will be doing a lot of baking this summer. It is a fun educative activity for the whole family.

Camping in the garden

Camping in the garden is on our list this summer. It is something we have never done but want to do, and I think the right time is the summer. We will be getting a tiny camping tent and all the necessary camping gear to make it as much fun as possible.

These are just some examples of free summer activities we will be doing this summer holiday. Of course, we will be doing other paid activities like soft play, theme park, visiting a farm, and the likes. But more of free activities, so a lot of thinking outside the box.

What plans do you have for the summer holiday? Please share them in the comments section below.

Thanks for reading.
