Free Summer Activities for Kids

School is shutting for summer in about 4 weeks, so it makes sense to have plans for the 6 weeks summer break. Money can be tight for many of us and let’s face, we all need free summer activities to keep the kids busy, regardless of how rich we may be. You can’t be on a beach or in a theme park every day for 6 weeks, so you have to think ahead of how to keep the little ones engaged.

I have lots planned for the summer holidays. As a work from home mum, working at home with the kids can be hard.  I will be planning lots of different activities and be fitting in work around our schedule, so everyone is happy.

Here are some free summer activities for kids we will be making the most of –

Go for walks

We love to go for walks. The kids enjoy being outdoors so we will be going for lots of long walks in our area.  There is something so refreshing about being outdoors especially when the weather is nice. It is a good way to get those steps in and stay fit. Plus, fresh air and sunshine does wonders for our state of mind so make the most of this free activity with the kids this summer.

Make the most of your garden space

Now I know I am so guilty of not making the most of our garden. We don’t use our garden as much as we should and that is going to change this summer. I am going to get fun stuff for the kids to play with and make the garden as child-friendly as possible. It is amazing how running around and playing can keep the kids so busy for hours.

Riding bicycles and scooters

We have spots in our estate where kids can ride their scooters and bicycles safely away from the road and cars. We are going to be visiting the spot quite regularly. I like being able to sit on a bench and watch the kids ride safely. It is another exciting activity for them to do outside the house, and it is free once you have the bike/scooter and safely accessories!

Visit your local playground

I will be visiting the local playground with the kids. Luckily for us, it is not far away from where we live, so we will be making the most of it. The kids enjoying playing on the slides, swings and the other rides. We can easily spend an hour there. A good spot to spend an afternoon.

Baking

For days when the weather is not playing nice, we will be baking indoors. The twins are very into baking now and are interested in the whole process. So, we will be doing a lot of baking this summer. It is a fun educative activity for the whole family.

Camping in the garden

Camping in the garden is on our list this summer. It is something we have never done but want to do, and I think the right time is the summer. We will be getting a tiny camping tent and all the necessary camping gear to make it as much fun as possible.

These are just some examples of free summer activities we will be doing this summer holiday. Of course, we will be doing other paid activities like soft play, theme park, visiting a farm, and the likes. But more of free activities, so a lot of thinking outside the box.

What plans do you have for the summer holiday? Please share them in the comments section below.

Thanks for reading.

  1. I love these ideas! Playing with my kids and growing memories is my favorite part of being a parent. Being as frugal as I am I prefer free experiences in the day to day. This is a great list to remind us that just going outside to play is a fun activity and doesn’t cost us anything. Yet they give us priceless memories!

  2. Great ideas for the summer. They don’t just have fun, they learn a lot of things while doing it. I used to do most of these when my son was little. Brings back lots of memories.

  3. These are really good ideas! I really like the idea of camping in your garden, I’ve never tried it but it sounds so much fun so I’ll definitely do it with my little nieces!

  4. I really do need to take more advantage of the garden space with my daughter and find things to do outdoors. I miss running around and having fun in the backyard with my daughter.
