How do you know when to go freelance full time

Let me take you all down memory lane of how I shuffled between my 9-to-5 and my freelance business. At first it started off as an avenue to make extra money doing what I love. With a lot of hard work and dedication, I turned my freelance business into my main source of income and said goodbye to my structured life.

Just like me, you’re probably juggling freelance projects with the work you have to do at your office. Sometimes it’s difficult to tell when is the right time to finally leave your 9-to-5 job and pursue what you love full-time. Here are a few pointers that can help you make the decision to leave your 9-to-5.

Do you have enough saved up for living expenses that will last you for some months?

Starting a business is a journey of uncertainties. In a 9-to-5 you know that you’re entitled to a specific fixed salary. But when you go freelancing full-time your income can vary from month to month. To cushion any downtime, it’s good to know you have enough saved up just in case.

If you have enough saved up to sustain you and your family for a couple of months then this is a sign you can go freelancing full-time.

Do you have a steady client-base?

Clients are what keep the business going. As a freelancer, its important to make sure that you have steady number of clients coming in before you can make the leap into pursuing your freelance career full-time.

Don’t leave your 9-to-5 job because you’re booked solid for the month. Make sure you have clients coming in every month such that you can almost bank on it. If your freelance business hasn’t gotten to that stage yet then focus on building your client base and getting steady retainers.

Are you earning more in your freelance business than you do in your 9-to-5?

While you’re saving up to venture into full-time freelancing, a good indicator that it’s time to dive full-time as a freelancer is if you’re earning more than you do at your 9-to-5.

If you weren’t freelancing you would have lived on your salary. It would have covered your monthly expenses. So if you want to go in full-time as a freelancer you need to ensure you earn the same amount consistently for a couple of months.

Are you willing to do all it takes to make your freelance career a success?

To be successful as a freelancer, you need to have your mindset fixed on succeeding. It takes work to grow a business. Are you determined to remain committed to putting in the work no matter what happens? You will experience ups and downs but if you push through then you will succeed.

Many freelancers fail not because they were not talented but because they were not ready to face all the challenges head on and persist till the end. Successful freelancers constantly build their network, develop products, sell their expertise and they are consistent at it.

If you’re not ready to stomach the challenges but still desire to go into freelancing full-time then work on your mindset daily. Position yourself as an entrepreneur in your mind. Sooner or later you’ll know you’re ready.

Are you running your own business full-time? How did you take the bold step?

Swarm Intelligence: A new way to think about business

Swarm Intelligence is the collective behaviour of self-organised natural or artificial systems. It was introduced by Geraro Beni and Jing Wang in 1989. The inspiration usually comes from nature. The agents just follow very simple rules, with no centralised structure. This act lead to the emergence of “intelligent” global behavior, which we is simply Swarm Intelligence.

My Introduction to Swarm Intelligence

I got to know about Swarm Intelligence many years ago in a biology class. I am sure many others would have heard of this at school as well. To refresh your mind, you can have a look at a biology essay help service, there is a paper on there which describes how a group of scientists at Harvard University under the direction of Michael Rubinstein several years ago announced the creation of robots called Kilobot.

Swarm Intelligence is a whole new way to think about business. If done correctly, it can enhance the way your business is run.  By following the footsteps of social insects, we can see how they operate successfully as a result of these characteristics –

Flexibility

They can adapt to a changing environment. Being able to adapt to any environment helps. It means we can keep going even when outside our comfort zones.

Robustness

Even when one or more individuals fail, the group can still perform its tasks unsupervised. Being able to work unsupervised and without guidance is not for everyone but every freelancer, business person and self employed individual need this characteristic.

Self-organisation

The day to day activities are not controlled or supervised. It can go from 0 to 100 very quickly. Being able to organise systems to work effectively and stay organised is needed in the smooth running of a business.

Swarm Intelligence and Freelancing

As a freelancer and a soloprenuer, I am a 1 woman team really. I do allocate some jobs out when I need to but I handle most of my business myself. Working from home with a family to cater for is not easy. I work round the clock everyday in order to get work done. The only way I get work done is by copying the Swarm Intelligence principles above.

I have to be able to be flexible and adjust to whatever life throws at me on a day to day basis. There is no manager or supervisor to tell me what to do, so I have to ensure I am on target and stick to deadlines. If I don’t work, I don’t get paid. It is as simple as that. I don’t have access to sick or holiday pay, so I have to ensure I work as many hours as I can to get my bills paid.

Have you ever heard of the term Swarm Intelligence? What are your thoughts on this?

Getting your Home Spring Ready

Winter is well and truly behind us now, and it is time to usher in the spring season. Which means it is time to tuck the chunky blankets away and bring on the light and airy decor. I am super excited, spring is such a beautiful season. It usually feels like a breath of fresh air after months of the chilly weather. And our winter this year started off really cold and ended up even colder. Special thanks to the Beast from the East and Storm Emma.

In the spring season, I am usually in the mood to do some decluttering and proper spring cleaning. There is just something about the longer days that makes me feel I can take on a lot more. I have been very busy these last few weeks, thinking of ways to make my home brighter for spring, and I have come up with these ideas.

Move furniture around

Moving furniture around is a quick easy of way of changing the look of a room. Once I spring clean our house, I get rid of anything we won’t be needing. Once that bit is done, I adjust some of the furniture that needs adjusting to suit the season. And it works every time. The room is instantly brightened up once these tasks are completed. You should try it.

Get storage furniture

I am a huge fan of any furniture that stores stuff. They are so handy to have around the house. I wish all furniture could store stuff. It would make my living a lot easier. I recently came across some amazing furniture desks on Lionshome and I wish I could grab them all. Here are 2 furniture desks on Lionshome website I really like.

I love how modern both desks are, especially the Sharpley Ladder Writing Desk. It would look amazing in my living room. And it would store our books neatly too.

Invite Nature In

I love to have flowers around the house especially in the spring/summer months. I suffer from Hayfever in the summer, so I am unable to spend as much time outdoors as I would want to. Having flowers in my living space is my way of inviting nature in and staying safe. Besides, pretty flowers are easy on the eyes and they smell fab.

Get Spring Candles

If you know me well enough, you would know how much I love my candles and diffusers. The smell of sweet-smelling candles and diffusers makes my house feel even more like a home. I have run out of my autumn/winter candles, so I will be stocking up on some spring/summer candles in the next few days. The smell of a fresh scent in my home lifts my mood. I love having different candles in each room, so I can get to sniff in different scents.

How are you getting your home ready for spring this year. Please share your interior decor ideas with us in the comments section below.

Thanks for reading.
