8 ways to achieve a rustic look in your home

Inspired by old farmhouses and woodland adventurers, rustic style is becoming ever more popular in home décor. As comfortable in modern homes as it is in traditional settings, there are both small and large enhancements you can use to add a rustic style to your home. Here’s a mixture of our favourite simple and more complex ways to get your desired style.

1. Exposed beam ceilings

Wood is a key element in achieving a rustic look in your home. It brings a log cabin feeling which is often associated with farmhouse style, and if they’re weathered-looking they give the feeling of authenticity. This is, of course, only applicable based on your home’s structure. Although you can often find faux wood beams which can work just as well, if not better, as you can choose your perfect style accordingly.

2. Fireplaces

A good fireplace is often the centrepiece when walking into a communal area, even more so in the winter months. If you’re looking to achieve true cosiness with a warm and inviting look, a fireplace makes a world of difference. Real wood works best as it throws out the authentic smell, although you can still achieve your desired look by choosing a rustic styled fireplace suite.

3. Raw stone

Raw, exposed stone looks incredible when paired with wooden styles. The more natural looking the better. You can incorporate it into the design of your walls, furniture, fireplace and so much more. There are numerous ways to achieve the look, which means you can stick to your budget by finding creative places for a splash of stone effect.

4. Reclaimed furniture

Reclaimed wood is a mainstay within rustic décor, and one of the best (and most cost-effective) ways of adding it into your home is through reclaimed and second-hand furniture. You can upcycle anything that’s damaged, or leave its weathered look to be incorporated into the overall style. And because you’re purchased second-hand, this drives the prices for good quality furniture right down. No more breaking the bank for new pieces!

5. Stacked firewood

If you managed to get your hands on a real wood fireplace as outlined in point 2, then stacked firewood serves both a practical and stylistic purpose. The pattern of stacked wood looks great in one uniform or varying colours.

6. Accessorise

Quirky knick-knacks and accessories are a quick way to add an instant look and feel into a room. Whether it is pieces of art or woodland-themed props and accessories, strategically placed they can add depth to a room. Although beware – if you’re working with a small room this can make it look clutters and shrink the space.

7. Big blankets and rugs

Big knitted blankets add a beautiful texture to rustic décor. They add cosiness and warmth, not to mention their practicality when the weather’s cold. You can also add faux animal rugs to the floor, which are soft on your feet and really adhere to a woodland-themed home.

8. Distressed wood flooring

For a rustic look, there’s not much that has the same desired effect as distressed wood flooring. Due to its imperfect and weathered-looking nature, it bring an authentic look. You don’t even have to splash out on real wood, as laminate or vinyl flooring could create the same effect for cheaper.

How to Make Your Home Cozy This Winter

When I think of winter, all it brings to mind is snuggling up close to the fire place with a cup of hot chocolate in my hands and auburn lights. It’s that time of the year when it’s all about enjoying the comfort of your home and the company of your family. And right now, I am loving the fireworks!

Winter is the time I spend indoors the most. Aside from it being cold outside, the warmth and friendliness of my house attracts me to it.

I must say that I put in quite a lot of work into making my home a lovely place to spend my time. And now that winter is here I can put my creativity to work to make my home a mini sanctuary. Here are some of my favourite practical tips to transform my home into a cozy abode this winter.

Light some candles

Candles are not for romantic dinners alone. Candles gives the whole house a lovely glow. It instantly transforms the mood.

I would recommend you go for scented candles as they not only make your home feel cozy, they also leave a pleasing scent that gives you the all round feel of comfort.

Cute cushions

You can’t do without cushions this winter. The more cushions you have at home (most especially in the living area), the more comfortable you feel. Since winter is more of a stay-at-home season you feel like burying yourself in a pile of cushions.

The best part about cushions is that they help add some colour to your home. I would advise that you select warm coloured cushions to complement the feel you want to achieve this winter.

Decorate your home with string lights

I’ve seen some pictures of people using string lights to decorate a corner of their room or place them around a mural or large portrait. They used string lights in creative ways to introduce more light into the house. I loved the idea and so I decided to try it.

One thing that winter reminds me of is Christmas. I call Christmas early by hanging string lights in some parts of my home. It makes the room a more magical and beautiful sight when I’m just sitting with a cup tea in the night.

Keep the blankets handy

I love having blankets nearby especially in the living area. It can get really cold during the winter and even though the house is well heated, I always feel a need to reach out for a blanket. It always paints a picture of coziness. You can drape a blanket over the couch or on your reading chair to add some contrast and colour.

Keep the fire on

I know that there are many people who don’t have fireplaces, but if you do have one, the fireplace becomes your greatest asset this winter. Aside from keeping the temperature up so that you don’t feel cold this winter, fireplaces create the vibe of comfort.

Make sure you maximize the use of your fireplace by arranging the couches to surround the fireplace. Another alternative is to keep the dining table near the fireplace so that you can enjoy lovely meals by the fire. Sometimes the fireplace may not be positioned to allow you to do those things. You can get giant pillows that you can put near the fireplace to create a special where place you can lounge.

Here are some summer decorating tips that you can start implementing right away –

Flowers or Floral print pillows

What if your home had blooming flowers all the time? Having real life flowers is always charming, and it is one of the best ways to ensure your home decor is seasonal. Another easy way to bring the summer into your home is to get floral print pillows.

Such pillows are excellent as summer decor as the warm colours of summer brings in this feel of summer. Get floral pillows that have a mix of orange, yellow and warm red. Such colours are excellent for depicting the summer vibe.

Bring in ‘em stripes

Aside from flowers and floral prints, stripes make a good pattern to decorate the house with. Striped throw pillows, striped table cloths and even striped wallpaper create a very lovely summer mood. Unlike floral prints, stripes are quite sober yet fun.

Remember to create some contrast. If you’re going to have striped wallpaper then you don’t have to cover all 4 walls. Stick to half or just one side.

Shaded string lights

Summer is a season of fun, warmth and family gatherings. Shaded string lights that are arranged in the garden or on the porch bring about a very playful feel. Everywhere is kept bright as the warm light from the shaded string lights line the sitting area outside. This inspires family dinners in the garden, where you’ll enjoy nature and the beauty of summer night.

The best way to go about this is using a string of shaded lights and arranging them along a porch or over the length of a shade where you know you can set a table where people can seat around for dinner. That creates the perfect ambience for the summer season.

Rearrange the room to focus on the windows

Here is my last summer decorating tip. Rearrange the room to focus on the windows if you can. This allows for more light to flow in.
