The Benefits of Exercise

Throughout history, the wise have understood that a healthy body and a healthy mind complement each other, and jointly contribute to us leading long and healthy lives. The ancient Greeks trained their children in their equivalent of gymnasiums every day in addition to learning reading, writing and mathematics.

Today, despite having access to better medical treatment than at any point in history, populations in the wealthy countries of the world are more at risk than ever before from obesity and other disorders caused partly or fully by a lack of exercise.

This is because we live in a world with an ample supply of unhealthy food and an abundance of pastimes which don’t involve any physical exercise.

Adults with busy lifestyles tend to rely on food that’s ready to eat or quick and easy to prepare, which often means fast food or ready-meals that tend to be high in sugar and fat. Young people tend to consume processed junk food and spend hours sitting dormant in front of TV screens or playing video games.

For these reasons, it is more important than ever that we all remain aware of the benefits of physical exercise and try to incorporate it into our weekly routines.

As a guideline, each week we should try to burn off at least the same approximate number of calories that we store. If our bodies continuously store more calories than they use, this creates what’s called a calorie surplus, and without exercise, it makes us accumulate fatty tissues, gain weight, and become less healthy.

It is true that an individual who already has a normal and healthy body shape can remain that way without exercising just by having a healthy diet, but good diet alone cannot achieve the same levels of health and fitness that can be obtained through a combination of the right diet and regular physical exercise.

As well as preventing the build-up of excess calories, exercise enhances the body in a variety of ways, such as improving strength, endurance, flexibility, balance and coordination, and cardiovascular efficiency. As well as improving our daily quality of life, these things help us stay fit and healthier for longer throughout our lives and into our old age.

We should aim to exercise in ways that achieve three things: the burning of calories, the toning of muscles, and the improvement of cardiovascular fitness. Good exercises for these are aerobic pursuits like running, swimming, cycling, rowing and exercise to music.

Those looking for significantly enhanced strength or size beyond what can be achieved through aerobic exercises should explore weight based training and restraint based exercises.

It can often seem difficult for us to incorporate an exercise regime into our lives. Many of us are kept very busy with work or family commitments and don’t get a lot of time to ourselves.

Effective exercise doesn’t have to take up a lot of time or involve going to the gym. Spending half an hour jogging outside or on a treadmill at home three times a week will be enough to keep most people at a healthy weight level. Cycling to and from work each morning, if possible, is also an excellent way to stay in shape.

If you can make time to go to a local gym, fitness centre or swimming pool, that’s great, but if not, there are plenty of ways to fit exercise into your life, so be creative and find what works best for you.

How do you stay fit and healthy? Do you exercise at home or outside your home?

How to Look Slimmer

UK Fashion Blogger Picture

I have added some weight in the last couple of weeks, and I am trying very hard to shake off. I don’t really mind the extra weight to be honest, my main focus is to look and feel very fit. But adding the extra weight has opened my eyes to some issues many women will be dealing with it on a day-to-day basis. Styling a new size 12 body can be a pain when all your outfits are in a size 10. Trust me I know, I have been there and done that, and I know first hand how that can also play on your body confidence, if you are not happy with the extra pounds added.

If your goal is to look slimmer while you work on your body, here are 6 tips for you:

Wear the right size

Wearing a size too small happens when we are in denial; holding on to our old body. If none of your clothes fit, get a few clothes that fit properly, while you work on your body, if that is what you are after. Squeezing your body in clothes that do not fit will only make you appear bigger.

Make sure you walk tall

Make sure you walk tall. Walk with your back straight and your head held up high. This is the simplest way to appear slimmer. This trick will elongate your body, making you look a size slimmer.

Choose your pieces carefully

Opt for lightweight fabrics such as cashmere, cotton, that will skim your curves, rather than stick on them. You should avoid lycra pieces as much as possible.

Go for darker colours

Dark colours help make us appear slimmer but you don’t have to wear all black. Navy blue, brown and dark grey all have the same slimming effect.

Ponytail

Wrapping your hair in a ponytail will instantly make anyone look slimmer. A ponytail gives the illusion of a slimmer face and a longer neck.

Heels

Heels have the power to make us look slimmer. I know many women struggle with walking in heels but once you find a comfortable pair, your style game will be out of this world! Heels paired with skinny jeans will make your legs appear longer and slimmer.

WorkOut at Home

To live a healthy lifestyle, you should not only have a healthy diet, you should also back it up with regular exercise. I have been working out every day, from the comfort of my home for awhile now and it has been brilliant so far. Although gyms are equipped with the state-of-the-art workout equipment, working out at home proves is a lot more convenient and cheaper, all I need to do is to go on YouTube and look up my favourite fitness channels; I am currently loving the Fitness Blender 37 minutes routine. Having my daughter in the background for moral support also helps. She joins me in my workout and actually encourages me to keep going when I am about to give up. Because I have just started the daily work-out routine, I find myself panting and struggling mid way, but when I hear ‘c’mon mummy’, and see her trying to get me up, it motivates me to finish off my routine!

As a busy mum, I find working out at home ideal for my lifestyle. I can work out in the mornings before the house wakes up, or in the evenings when the kids are in bed.  I can fit my workout sessions around my busy schedule without disturbing my regular routine.

I have been working-out from home for some days now, and these tips have helped me greatly:
1.    Have a specific time set aside to workout
If you care about your health and want to stay fit and in shape, then you need to exercise regularly. Treating exercise as a non-negotiable activity is like keeping an appointment with a client. You must not miss it. The best time to workout at home is in the morning as soon as you wake up as it helps you feel more energized and productive throughout the day. I try to work out everyday but if I can’t, I aim for at least 3 days a week, which is more ideal because your muscles will have more time to rest and heal.
2.    Have a purpose for exercising
To get fit you need to be committed to exercising regularly. Sometimes, (and I know it will happen) you’ll encounter days when you’ll feel like giving up. To keep you focused and motivated, have a purpose for working out. Do you want to have abs before the next summer? Do you want to be fit? Set it as a goal. Write your purpose out or pin it on your vision board so you remember why you need to work-out. Anytime you feel like giving up, go back to the vision board and keep going.
3.    Determine the type of exercises you’ll do
If you’re just starting off, following fitness videos can help you keep in shape. The trainer in fitness videos puts together a set of exercises that will help you tone, build muscle or burn fat in your body. Make sure you pick a video that will help meet your fitness goals. If losing weight is your goal then Popsugar’s 40-minute metabolism boosting workout is just for you. To sculpt you legs and body, BeFit’s legs and butt workout will do the trick. If you want to have washboard abs, then Blogilates’ 3-minute ab workout will be ideal. For those of you who are more into yoga’s meditative exercises, you can go for Tara Stiles’ Flexibility and Range of Motion video.

4.    Have your exercise items nearby
Having the items you use to workout, like your gym clothes – don’t forget your sport bra, thank me later, trainers and socks, water bottle, Fitbit, exercise or yoga mat and weights (if you’re going to use any), nearby sets your mind in the mood to start your fitness routine. They also act as reminders of your commitment to exercise. Keeping fit requires a lot of discipline so having your fitness gear on will help you remain focused and get you in the work-out mood.
5.    Get an exercise buddy
Exercising becomes easier when you know that you’re not doing it alone. Team up with a friend or family member who will keep you accountable. My daughter (lol) and my sister are my exercise buddies.

Your exercise buddy doesn’t have to come to your house to exercise with you. Sync your exercise routines then check on each other to share how far you’ve gone with your exercises.

Working out from home has changed my life. I feel better, I look better, and I don’t see myself ever going back to not working out regualrly ever again.

Do you work-out from home? How do you find it?
