How to Style your Wide Hips

Floral Summer Outfit Image

A lot of women look at fashion magazines and their heart sinks, when they see models with the “perfect” bodies. As they flip through the pages, they start to wonder why they were not blessed with such amazing figures? The truth is that there’s no such thing as the “perfect” body. Every figure is perfect as long as you know how to style it. Dressing for your body type is the key.

Many of these celebrities we look up to and admire have wide hips, like Jennifer Lopez, Shakira, Amber Rose, Kim Kardashian and Beyoncé, and they are rocking them like divas. When wide hips balance out your whole body, it gives you a sexy figure. But when your hips are far wider than the other parts of the body, you need a couple of styling hacks to get you through. And if you are wondering how to get bigger hips, there will be a post on that shortly.

Having wide hips does not mean that your figure is not attractive. The trick is to aim for a balance. The key to styling wide hips is to direct focus away from the hips and to other parts of your body, so your bust, waist and legs.

Here are some styling tips for you:

Say NO to Bright Colours

Make sure you avoid bright colours, patterns or any type of accessories anywhere in the hip region. They attract attention to your hips.
If you have wide-hips, and you have trouble finding the right clothes to style your figure, then I’ve got you covered.

Cover Up

Tunics and shirts, that reach the middle of your hips or below your bum region, help create a balance with your figure. Make sure that the hemlines of your tunic or shirt is loose so that it flares out. This helps create more room for your hips. If you like, you can wear a waist belt over your shirt to keep the focus on your waist and way from your hips.

No Lyca

Although tunics and shirts help in balancing your figure, you need to be extra careful with the type of fabric you choose. Avoid fabrics that hug your body like fitted polyester or lycra. They make your hips look bigger. The same goes for woolly clothing.

Wrap Dresses Are Needed

Tops with empire-cut waistlines or wrap dresses help cover your hips by accentuating your waist and flaring out to your hips thereby keeping your hips away from view.

Layer with a Long Jacket

There may be times when you would like to wear a shirt or top that does not cover your hips. In such a situation, go for a long jacket that reaches your bum area or flows up to your knees. The long jacket will hide your hips and create that needed balance.

Go for Trousers with a Higher Waist

When styling your figure, you need to take attention away from your hips. Trousers with a high waist give you that most needed balance as it diverts attention from your hips and makes your legs appear longer.

Wear A-line Clothing and Straight Skirts

A-line clothing and straight skirts cover the hips and give you a lovely figure. A-line clothing starts at your waistline and flare out all the way to your knees. This way it covers the hips and accentuates the waist. If you want to go for an A-line dress, try the ones with a plunging neckline. This will help create additional focus on your torso.

Straight skirts help to maintain a line such that the hips are in proportion with the rest of your body.

Style with Shoulder Pads

I can see you rolling your eyes at this tip BUT it is a very clever way of creating a balance in your figure. Shoulder pads make the shoulders appear wider. Coupled with your wide hips, it makes your frame look square which helps to prevent your hips from attracting any extra attention.

When you are James Bond, you have fashion stylists and designers working around the clock to ensure you look the part. And he does certainly look the part in this elegant suit right here.
