Dubai Summer Holiday

If you follow me on Instagram or Twitter, then you would know I am currently in Dubai with the family for a summer vacation. We got here some days ago. It has been lovely so far. We have a huge apartment to ourselves at the lovely DoubleTree by Hilton Jumeirah Beach, with an amazing view and a private beach! I couldn’t ask for anything more. It is a perfect home away from home with huge rooms, a washing machine, massive fridge/freezer, kitchen, everything!

Coming from good old Cheshire, with the summer weather reaching a maximum of 30 degrees on a good hot day, Dubai’s weather reaching above 40 degrees is something. It is a good change from what we are used to so we are trying to make the most of it.

I am planning to hit the beach later today with kiddies and have been sorting out my swimwear essentials.  I did a lot of holiday shopping before we took off, so we could come prepared. I rarely have the opportunity to rock a good bikini in a 40 degrees weather, so I went all out shopping for some luxury ladies swimwear and some other summer beach holiday essentials.

I shopped Fat Face for the first time, and I got the hat and slippers, which have been so useful. I also got some last-minute suncream at a Boots shop because I forgot to carry mine.

I love Dubai so much. This is my third time visiting this amazing country, I was here last December for Christmas, and I know I would be visiting again. It is one of those countries you just don’t get tired of, for me anyway.

We will be visiting another country in the Middle East in the next few days before heading home, so it is going to be a chilled but busy week. I will be posting as regular as I can but the timing may be a little different, so look out.

Any plans for the summer? Have you visited Dubai before?

8 Ways to Train your Brain to Write Everyday

As a freelancer, writing forms a major part of my work activity. To keep Fashion and Style Police up and running, I need to make sure that there is a steady flow of content everyday or almost everyday. I also have to do a good amount of writing for my clients, so I am always writing.

What has helped me in creating content consistently is my habit of writing. Let’s face it. No matter what medium you use in your business, writing will always form an important place in your life. This is a skill that does not come by chance. The greatest bloggers or freelancers we have now are diligent writers. They make it a point of duty to write everyday.

If you’ve not been the type who writes consistently, then this post is just for you. Here are 8 ways you can train yourself to be a real content machine.

Set aside a specific time everyday to start writing

Sometimes it is only when you have a specific time of the day to write that your creative juice flows. If you are the type who wakes up early in the morning, then let writing be the first thing you do before anything else. The same goes for if you are a night person. Or you can get super specific by setting a particular time in the day like 2pm everyday.

Keep your writing materials near by

You may have the desire to write everyday, but when you know that you have to walk a distance before you can write something down, there’s a high possibility that it will cool you off completely.

Keep your writing materials close to you so that you can be more motivated to write. Put a notebook and a pen near your bed or make use of the notepad on your phone, that is what I use 90% of the time.

Get an accountability partner

Having someone who can keep you accountable will help you write more often. Tell a friend who can keep you accountable and check on your progress everyday. This will keep you on your toes everyday. You wouldn’t want to disappoint that friend of yours, would you?

The Writer

Come up with a list of things everyday

I heard about this tip and it’s quite effective. Come up with a list of 10 things everyday. For example, “10 ways to sleep well” or “10 travel ideas you can try out”. These lists will help you push your mind to build content around your ideas. No matter how long or how short your list is, it will get you in the mood of writing.

Keep a journal

A journal is where you write events that happen to you on a daily basis. What better way to get in the writing mode than by keeping a journal? Write something about what happened during the day. It’s not always a must to be able to write something relating to your business everyday. It could be on personal things. The idea is to keep writing.

Have 30-day challenge

Challenges get you in the competitive spirit. The idea is to be able meet a target. What makes this effective is, if you could make your 30-day writing challenge public. Share your progress everyday with your friends on Facebook or Twitter and even on Instagram. When you share your progress with your audience, it keeps you publicly accountable.

Mark your calendar

This is an easy exercise that will keep you going in your writing efforts. Have a spare calendar. Each time you write something, take a red marker to put a big X on the day. Try this the next day and then the next. The aim is to not break the chain of red Xs. Since you do not want to break the chain you will be more eager to write. It works!

Aim to write a certain number of words everyday

Start with 100 words a day. 100 words a day should take you less than 15 minutes to write. Train yourself to write 100 words everyday. Do this for 30 days. Before you know it, it will be a part of you. The day you skip this exercise, roll it over to the next day. For example, when you miss one day, that means you will have to write 200 words the next day. That will serve as punishment whenever you miss a day.

How to Stay Motivated Working from Home

I have shared, on several occasions, how freelancing has changed my life. I think this is one of the best professions on earth! If I were given a chance to start all over again, I’d still choose to be a freelancer. With all the opportunities and benefits freelancing offers, it is, by far, the most effective way for me to earn a living.

But freelancing is not for everyone, and I get that. Many people I know struggle to motivate themselves whilst working from home, so they stick to the 9-5, while others struggle to stay motivated but want to continue freelancing.

The beauty of Freelancing, is that it gives you the chance to work from anywhere you want and have flexible working hours too. But more often than not, we forget so soon that being a freelancer means that you are the boss of your own business and you have to run, regardless of where you work from.

When you start taking freelancing lightly, you have no motivation to work, you don’t meet deadlines and you are losing the desire to carry on. Here is how you can stay focused on your business and stay motivated everyday as you continue your journey as a freelancer.

Have a goal

Having a goal always works. Goal setting is one of the most important things to do when you’re running a business. With a goal in mind, you are able to know where you are headed, and stay focused.

Set yearly goals then break them up into smaller goals for the month, week and day. Make sure that everything you do is aimed at taking one definite action towards achieving what you desire.

Have an accountability partner

When you’re your own boss, you don’t have anyone checking up on you, which means you could end up slacking sometimes. The best way to get yourself motivated to work from home is to have someone who, just like you, is running a similar business.

Share your goals with your accountability partner and check on each other to find out how you are fairing in your business. When you know someone is going to ask of your progress you are bound to be on your toes and work harder to ensure you smash all your targets.

Affirmations

Reciting affirmations daily keeps you motivated and leaves you with a positive mindset. Sometimes, it gets lonely and overwhelming working from home. Recite positive affirmations daily helps to keep your state of mind and business.

I recommend that you recite at least 3 to 5 positive affirmations every morning before you start work. When I do this I feel refreshed and ready to face any challenge that may come my way.

Change your environment

Working from home is not like working in a cubicle. A regular 9 to 5 job keeps you in physical contact with people. While working from home could mean days go by without you speaking to anyone (except family and maybe the postman).

The beauty about being a freelancer is that you can work anywhere you want to. You can take your work to your favourite café, park or even on holiday with you, like I plan to do in a few days. Changing your work environment does help keep the work interesting.

Do you work from home? How do you motivate yourself to work?
