Why More Women are Quitting Their Jobs to Run Their Own Business

The journey to independence for women has been a very long one. If you go through history, women had to fight to have a place as members of the work force. It was a huge struggle as women were relegated to the background. According to societal norms, the only job women could do at that time was to be housewives.

Fast forward to the 21st century, women are taking up more roles in the work force. They are not only trained to practice their profession, they also head key positions. From the civil service to corporate institutions, women are no longer an unfamiliar sight.

But now there is a new trend springing up. More women are transitioning from being employees to being business owners. I am privileged to be among them. I left my 9-to-5 to focus on my own business.

A lot of people wonder why there are more women quitting their jobs to run businesses of their own. I thought it will be a good idea to compile a list of key reasons why they do so.

Participating in the rat race doesn’t cut it anymore

Having a 9-to-5 jobs creates the illusion of stability and an avenue to practice your profession. You’re assured of a regular job with a good salary and a pension when you retire. But the truth is that working at a 9-to-5 job is anything BUT stable.

You could be fired at any time. Your salary may not be enough to pay all your bills and you could end up living on your credit card. The office politics causes both emotional and mental agony. Even if everything about working at a 9-to-5 were rosy, it doesn’t give you fulfillment.

Smart women know that in order to truly experience a good life, they need to take matters into their own hands and be their own bosses.

You’re more in control

If there is anything working as an employee doesn’t offer, it would be living life on your own terms. As an employee, you are constantly taking orders from a superior. Unlike a 9-to-5, running your own business guarantees flexible working hours and you are able to work towards what you want to receive every month.

Female entrepreneurs know that taking care of a family comes with a lot of responsibilities and no matter how generous your employer is there are some things he or she will not be willing to waive for you.

Freedom to pursue your passion

Let’s face it. You can actually count the number of people who are happy with their cubicle lifestyle. I remember when I was working at my 9-to-5, more than half of my colleagues sulked to work. Starting from Monday, everyone was looking forward to Friday so that they could enjoy the weekend. I can never forget the days my work caused me so much strain and sadness.

When I finally called it quits and started my own business, I established a business that brought me fulfillment. I was able to do something that I am passionate about.

That is exactly what female entrepreneurs get to enjoy when they run their own businesses. They do what they love and business is never a drag because they are passionate about what they are doing.

How to keep going without a support system

When I started blogging 5 years ago, I had very few real life supporters. Some of my friends and family members did support me but many didn’t. When I say support, I mean they didn’t visit my blog as regularly as I would want them to or didn’t bother visiting at all. Some did visit secretly but won’t leave a comment or share my blog post, so I didn’t consider that support. It was more of them being curious, noisy and to have something else to chat about. They didn’t share or comment on my blog posts but rather were quick to criticise and offer clueless advise.

My Support System

So I had a very small support system with my mum being my greatest cheerleader. She was and still is my biggest support system when it comes to my work here online. And I am sure that is the same for many of us. Mothers are the best right?

I can never understand why people find it so hard to support other people’s dreams and passions. I don’t know anyone in my real life that blogs. The ones I did know back in the day, have abandoned their blogs so it sometimes gets to me. I wish I had friends with blogs so we could bounce off ideas and exchange crazy emails we get but I don’t have any of that unfortunately. I have made a few blogger friends online but not met any in real life really so it is still friendship from a distance. But back to the point, I struggled in the early days to keep blogging without a support system. I found it so difficult to get over the fact that people were just funny like that when you pursue your dreams.

I still remember a particular scenario concerning a certain lady I thought was a friend. I was so excited when I started Fashion and Style Police, I shared the link happily with her. The blog was just a couple of days old, so there were only a couple of blog posts on here. The only good thing this friend had to say was that there were only a few blog posts on here. And I was like what? I only started blogging the other day, how many were you hoping to see? She had nothing good to say except to criticise so I got rid of that friendship after a few more funny encounters.

No Support System

Life has taught me that it is OK not to have a strong  support system when you embark on something that sets your soul on fire. It is OK not to get the validation form those closest to you. You don’t need the approval of anyone to pursue your dreams. It is great to have your family and friends in your corner, cheering you on but it is OK not to. As you carry on in the pursuit of happiness, whatever that might be, you will eventually get to a stage where you no longer notice those who support you as you will be overwhelmed with support from those that matter.

Close friendships may fade away with time and new real friendship that truly matter will develop. And at the end of day, you realise you don’t really need a support system to reach for the stars. It would be great to have one but you can still do you without one. Remember why you started and stay focused. Establish good relationships and break off those that undermine your business. Keep your circle small and tight. The rest would follow. Life has taught me that and much more…..

Being Underweight or Overweight is not Cool

I love to write. It is a very rewarding and relaxing exercise. I would be completely lost if I could not read or write for a day. Writing and reading has become a part of life, I can’t do without. Fashion and Style Police allows me make a living, working from home and caring for my children. And it feeds my creative juice, which is amazing. It is really the best of all worlds!

Having said that, my fitness life went downhill once I started working from home. Prior to working from home, I had a great fitness routine with my gym workouts and all. But once I popped my kids and started working from home full-time, it became a lot harder to find time for exercise. This time last year, I added a few pounds and felt so heavy. I struggled to get rid of the weight but I got there in the end. My body weight is now back to what it used to be and I am happy with it. I also feel lighter and more healthy, which is great.

Going for long walks really helped me lose the weight. I enjoy going for long walks, especially when I am alone. I like to admire nature, while listening to some good music and taking in the beauty that surrounds me and the freshness in the air. That is why I love my school runs. Since the kiddies started pre school, I get out of the house everyday and I also get to walk back and forth alone, in peace, which is great for my mind.

My fitness live is going in the direction I need it to go. As a work-from-home mother, I have to consciously make an effort to stay fit. The GymCube website has been a massive help. The fitness videos are so useful and I find them easy to do at home. Good to know that the excess weight gained is all in the past. I didn’t gain a lot but I felt heavier and my clothes didn’t fit, so that was the cue I needed to get myself back in shape. I am happy with my current weight (I am a size UK 10 or 12 depending on where I shop). All that is needed now is to strengthen and define my body some more.

Being Underweight or Overweight is not Cool

I see a lot of people both online and offline, who are actively promoting their unhealthy body weights. They act like it is ok to be massively underweight or overweight. If the weight is caused by a health related issue, that is completely different. However, if it is not, then something should be done about it.

If you are truly happy with being overweight or underweight, that is fine but please stop promoting these unhealthy lifestyle on social media.  Being overweight/underweight is not cool and it is not healthy. Stop acting like it is! If you find yourself in such a situation, like I did a year ago, do something about it. If you are honestly happy with your size regardless of what it is, then stay quiet about it. The going back and forth on social media with trolls and fans alike is disturbing. You could be a giving a teenager struggling to lose or gain weight, a thumbs up for remaining the way she is. This is not OK.

This has been on my mind for some time now and I am glad I finally got my thoughts down. What do you think? Is being underweight or overweight now cool on online?
