6 Tips on Working with Other Bloggers

6 Tips on Working with Other Bloggers

Blogging is a very social job or hobby as the case may be. You don’t have to be a social butterfly in real life, but you will need to be as social as possible online, for you to succeed as a blogger. As an introvert, I initially struggled with this reality. I enjoy the company of people I have a good rapport with, but sometimes I just want to be by myself (which is why I can’t be bothered with blog events most of the time). I get my energy by spending time alone. In fact, I strive in isolation, it still amazes me what I get done in a matter of minutes when I am alone.

However, I have learnt overtime that I need to come out of my comfort zone with regards to socializing online, and I have. I hosted my very own Twitter party some months ago, I have joined a couple of Facebook groups, and I am engaging a lot more on my social media channels, especially on Twitter and Instagram.

Since I have started being more social and active online, I have seen my blog and social media platforms grow. I have met some amazing bloggers, and got to read some great blogs. I have also learnt a lot more about the blogging industry as a whole. I have achieved so much more as a result of the relationship I have with other bloggers. Fashion and Style Police won’t be where it is today without my readers, many of which are bloggers.

The blogosphere is now so huge, with a new blog popping up every minute. It is a huge community, every smart blogger should be making the most of it. I don’t see other bloggers as rivals, I see them as colleagues and I am happy to offer some blog-loving every now and again, in return for nothing.

Every blogger, no matter how long they have been blogging for, sees their blog as special, if not they won’t be blogging. Majority of us bloggers also want to be accepted and liked by fellow bloggers within or outside our blog niche. So it amazes me that quite a number of bloggers do not know how to work with fellow bloggers.

Well, if you are wondering how you could help a fellow blogger, you are reading the right post. Here are some tips:

Be Nice/Polite

I see a lot of bloggers being so rude to other bloggers and passing derogatory comments around, like being nasty is part and parcel of being a blogger, and I am like, really? To exceed in any business, you have to be respectful and nice. It pays to be nice. If anything, it brings good karma. Be nice.

Do Not Believe your Own Hype

Now many bloggers believe their own hype and I kind of see where they are coming from. You have to believe your ow hype to stand out from the rest, the blogging community is filled up with alls sorts of talent, it is hard work standing out so I guess you have to hype yourself to get notice. However, what annoys me is seeing a lot of ‘big’ bloggers or small bloggers that think they have arrived, looking down on smaller bloggers just because they feel they are not worth their time or effort. I find this really annoying because every blogger, regardless of their social following or blog readers, passed through that new stage, and the truth of the matter is, many blog readers are bloggers. So when I see bloggers believing their own hype, it makes me laugh out loud, because the ‘small’ blogger they are ignoring today may be the Zoella next year, who knows….

Do not Copy

Do not copy a blog post or a blog post idea, no matter how ‘inspired’ you are. Every blogger puts in a lot of thought and work into a blog post, and for you to just blatantly steal it is just wrong. Many bloggers think about the same ideas around the same time, and there is nothing anyone can do about it. The fact that you thought of an idea first and wrote it, does not mean other bloggers have not thought of the same idea, and planned a similar post theme. The cool thing about this issue is, it is very easy to tell if a blog post is copied from another blog when looking at both posts.

Link Back

If you are inspired by a blog post, or a blogger’s review or outfit, mention that on your blog and link back to the blog you got the inspiration from. If you like a blogger’s picture, and you want to include that photo in a blog post, remember to link back. Give credit to whom credit is due.

Guest Post

I currently do not accept guest posts from other bloggers but I know many bloggers who do. Ask around within your niche, and start guest posting to increase your blog’s back links and gain new readers. Guest posting is a great way to grow your blog and work with bloggers.

Spread the Love

Read other blogs, share blog posts you like, leave a thougthful comment, follow like minds,  and just engage with other bloggers. Do not be afraid to start off a conversation. Spread the love, life is too short!

So there you have it, my 6 tips on working with other bloggers. These tips have worked for me, and I am sue they would work for you.

6 PR Tips for Working with Bloggers

So last week, I wrote about blogging tips for working with PRs, which was very well received by bloggers. So for today, I decided to write about PR tips for working with bloggers, because lets face it, some of these PRs are completely clueless when it comes to working with bloggers. We need to hold their hands, and I hope they find this post useful.

Provide ALL information in the First/Second Email

I hate it when I receive an email with for a blog request, and I have to keep asking for all the required information to be sent. It is off-putting guys. I like working with PRs that send full or part information out in the first email to see if I am interested, and send the rest of the information, if not already sent, in the second email. It just shows they have their head on their neck, and they know what they are doing. So information like – budget, type of link required, anchor texts if any, deadlines, and so on, I need to know in  the second email, so I know if I am going ahead or not.

I hate having to go back and forth many times, when such information should have been sent in full earlier. It is just a waste of my time and it puts me off working with such PRs in the future.

Do Not Hide the Fact That You Do Have a Budget

I hate it when PRs hide the fact that they do have a budget for a campaign, and try to see if they can get me to work for free. This has happened so many times now and I find it so annoying and dishonest. I know many bloggers fall for this trick because many are uncomfortable talking about money and I really don’t know why.

Well I am VERY comfortable talking about money so I don’t fall for this trick but it still gets to me. Many PRs will approach you with a request, and won’t mention anything about a budget until you do, and then they say yes they have £X budget for this, and I am like, why did you have to wait for me to ask you? Surely, you should have said that in your second email when I asked for all the necessary information to be sent. This puts me off working with such PRs as I find them dishonest, and looking for inexperienced bloggers to rip off.

Pay Us On Time

Pay bloggers when you say you would. If its 24 hours, pay in 24 hours. If its 20 working days, pay in 20 working days. There are so many media agencies and PRs that I have had the pleasure of working with and that do pay when they say they would. Digital agencies like Mediaworks, and Bronco, pay invoices within hours of receiving them, which I find fantastic. I enjoy working with these agencies because I don’t have to continuously chase up payments, but these type of agencies/PRs are few and far in between.

I have discovered from personal experience that those companies/PRs that say they will pay your invoice in 30 days for example, hardly ever pay in 30 days. I usually have to chase the payment up daily and stalk them on social media to get it paid. Unlike those that say they will pay immediately they receive the invoice. I usually never have to chase payments up with those companies as they pay on the same day most times.

I am currently waiting on a couple of invoices to be paid, fingers crossed I will get paid within the agreed timescales.

Editorial Control

I hate it when PRs ask me to send a draft of a post before it goes live, and I always let them that is not going to happen, and they are free to go to the next blogger. I do not allow anyone else have editorial control on my blog. If you need to read a similar blog post, I would happily send you a link from the blog archives but sending a draft before publishing a post doesn’t sit well with me at all.

It makes me fill uneasy to send a draft of anything I write to anybody. No family member or friend read a draft of my book until it was live on Amazon. The only person to read a draft was my proofreader and editor. That is how I like to operate because I trust my instincts and judgement too much to ask for a second opinion when it comes to my work, and having someone else approve my work gets me anxious. Many PRs respect that, and I hope many more start to understand that.

Mutually Beneficial Collaborations

PRs need to understand that for a collaboration to take place, and for both parties to be happy, it has to be mutually beneficial. There has to be something in it for you and me, not just you. So you want me to write about your client, you need to pay my rates, you want me to review your products, I will pick the products I am interested in if possible, and you may need to pay an admin charge if required. You want me to attend an event, it has to be an event that would change my life, event I would enjoy attending, for me to drop everything and come.

The point am making is there has to be something in it for me, there is something in it for you already, if not you won’t be contacting me.

Be Personal

I understand PRs and SEOs are very busy, so some of them send general emails to many bloggers at once. That is completely understandable but I like to read personal emails every now and again. It catches my attention when you address me by my first name, and you metioned something personal about me or Fashion and Style Police, that confirms you have read my blog and done your research. It shows you know what you are doing and I am so quick to respond to such emails.

So there you have it. My tips for PRs, working with bloggers. I hope you enjoyed reading it.

Please leave me a comment adding your tips. I will love to read about your experience working with PRs/SEOs.

Thanks for reading xoxo

3 Blogging Rules Meant To Be Broken

3 Blogging Rules Meant To Be Broken

Blogging Image

Some rules are meant to be broken they say, and when it comes to blogging, this saying is so true. When I started blogging three years ago, I read so many blogging tips, and I thought I needed to follow every tip, to make it as a blogger. Well, 3 years after, I am glad to say I stopped following these tips (that were not working for me anyways), and I am still here, and doing quite well.

Here are 5 blogging tips you should ignore:

Be a Niche Blogger

I wrote about niche blogs some months ago, and how the jury is still out on whether to blog within a niche or to have multiple niches. When I started blogging in 2013, I had only one niche in mind – fashion (just look at my blog name), and then I wanted to blog about beauty and general lifestyle topics, and I found that I couldn’t because all these other sites said not to.

Then  one day I just decided to blog about whatever I felt like blogging about and I have done so ever since. I enjoy writing about fashion, beauty and lifestyle, and I also enjoy reading non niche blogs, I find the content quite interesting.

Being a non-niche blogger has done more good than harm. I have more followers, some are following for my outfit posts, some for my product reviews, others for my fashion posts or lifestyle posts. Being a non-niche blogger has also opened doors for more sponsored post opportunities as well, because I can work with various brands, and not limited to only fashion brands.

So I will advise you to blog about whatever you like, as long as the niches are related like fashion/beauty, parenting/lifestyle, food/lifestyle, you will be fine.

Fake It Until You Make It

I wrote about fashion and finances some years ago, and it is shocking that I still see bloggers, especially fashion bloggers living a lie, just to belong. They are wearing clothes, shoes and bags that cannot afford, to impress people they don’t know, just to feel among the ‘it’ bloggers. The rule – ‘Faking it until you make it’, will leave you broke. Trust me, I have been there and done that.

You don’t need to have a completely new outfit for every outfit post, you don’t need to publish a new outfit post every other day to succeed as a fashion blogger, please do not feel like you have to feature a shopping haul post just because every other fashion/beauty blogger is doing that, I have never featured a shopping haul post because I don’t see why I have to, I also do not enjoy reading such topics and I am still here.

Be yourself, and own it.

Go Self-Hosted

When I started blogging, I went straight for my own domain because I knew from the start, that I was going to take it seriously. Along the way, I learnt about self-hosted and how important it was to be self-hosted to succeed as a professional blogger. Well, I am not self-hosted, and I have no plans to go self-hosted. I have ads on my blog (WordAds), and I make a decent income from sponsored posts and product reviews so there is another rule I have broken.

For those who still believe sponsored posts are not allowed on WordPress.com, and you can only make money off a self-hosted blog, here is a quote from the policies page:

When a company or individual encourages you to publish content for the purpose of promoting a specific product, service, or idea, we consider this a sponsored post. Whether you are paid to publish this material or not, we allow sponsored posts on WordPress.com as long as they consist of original content created by you.

So there you have it in black and white, another blogging broken rule I have broken.

You don’t have to go self-hosted to succeed as a blogger, as long as you have your own domain, you should be fine.

So there are three blogging rules. You can read more about how to make a success of your blog from my recently launched eBook – How to Cash In as a Blogger, now available on Amazon.

Thanks for reading and downloading, and have a great week.
