How to Care for a Dehydrated Skin

Ever noticed your skin looking dull and hollow? Are you seeing more fine lines or wrinkles on your face than before? Does your skin bounce lazily back after pinching your cheeks? You most likely have dehydrated skin.

Most people get the term dehydrated skin confused with dry skin. Dehydrated skin is when your skin lacks moisture and it’s a skin condition while dry skin is a skin type.

A lot of things can lead to dehydrated skin, such as low humidity where there’s a lack of moisture in the air, cold weather and even sunrays.

The reason why dehydrated skin goes unnoticed is because many people mistake the oil on your face to mean that your face has enough moisture. Flaky skin, dull-looking colour and fine lines are key indicators of dehydrated skin. Since dehydrated skin is skin that’s in great need of water or moisture then the most effective way to deal with this condition is to restore the moisture back to the skin. Most people believe that drinking plenty of water will help bring back the moisture to the skin. This is true, but there should be a form of skincare routine in place to help bring the moisture to the skin.

If you’re suffering from dehydrated skin, then here’s how you can bring back the moisture your skin craves:

Make moisture your friend

Moisturizers contain the right ingredients that will help your skin retain the moisture it really needs. Moisturizers penetrate deep in your skin and once absorbed it locks in the moisture. This helps to keep your skin hydrated for several hours.

When choosing the right moisturizer go for the ones that contain either glycerine, hyaluronic acid or squalene. These powerful ingredients help lock in the moisture. No wonder many moisturizers contain at least one of them!

To get maximum benefit from your moisturizer apply it on your skin one layer at a time. This will give your skin the opportunity to properly absorb the moisturizer. It also prevents your face from looking shiny or oily.

Another great tip is to apply moisturizer at least 3 minutes after stepping out of the shower. The moisturizer will retain the water on your body that did not completely dry out.

Have a skincare routine that focuses on rehydrating your skin

With an effective skincare routine you can correct almost any skin condition. All you have to do is be consistent. Start off your mornings with a nice cleansing. Use a cleanser that contains glycerin as that will help moisturize your skin as you cleanse it. Next apply moisturizer taking it one layer at a time.

If your skin is flaky you may have to exfoliate it at least 3 times a week but make sure you moisturize each time you do.

Be conscious of how your skin feels

Usually when your skin dehydrated, you’ll feel your skin tighten. Whenever you feel it go tight, apply a nice amount of moisturizer. If you’re not sensitive to how your skin feels then take care to take note of your environment. If you find yourself in an air-conditioned room for a long time make sure you apply moisturizer as the air conditioner soaks up moisture from your skin. Where the temperature is low or the humidity is low, moisturize to avoid dehydrated skin.

These tips will surely help any dehydrated skin.

Caring for your Skin this Autumn/Winter

Our skin reacts differently to different weather conditions. As we’re transitioning from summer to autumn and winter, you will experience some changes in our skin.

Summer is loved by many with the bright sunny long days, but the harsh sun rays can take a serious toll on our skin. So autumn and winter should be spent remedying the harm the summer weather has caused to our skin.

During the autumn and winter season, the chilly dry weather can cause our skin to dry out due to lack of moisture in the air. If not treated soon enough, your skin will start to crack or grow flaky or even become red or irritated. To avoid this skin issue, we need to pay special attention to our skin during the autumn/winter months, especially if you have a dry season.

These simple steps will help keep your skin protected from the autumn and winter weather, and heal the damage caused by the summer.

  1. Gently exfoliate your skin

Do not underestimate the power of exfoliating, Exfoliation is a very important part of any skin care routine. It helps remove dead skin cells and leaves the face feeling and looking very smooth. I think one of the best parts about exfoliation is that it helps to prepare the skin to easily absorb the benefit from moisturizers or creams.

There are various exfoliators for different skin types so shop around for the best product for your skin. If you have a dry skin, opt for an oil-based scrub. It will help to gently exfoliate your skin and supply it with the needed moisture at the same time. At the moment, I use Clean and Clear Daily Facial Scrub to exfoliate but I have recently bought a No 7 scrub so look out for the review.

  1. Cleanse your skin

Start off by gently yet thoroughly cleansing your skin. For autumn, you skin care routine will involve more moisturizing to help keep your skin hydrated. Also ensure the moisture gets locked in so the skin doesn’t dry out. I use this fab face wash by Premae Skincare and it is the truth. It wipes every trance of makeup off.

  1. Moisturize

Moisturizers will help keep your skin hydrated, soft and supple. To boost your moisturizer level, go for creams or serums instead of lotions. They are thicker and this forms a more protective barrier on your skin. They will also help prevent your skin from losing water. I am currently loving my No 7 Beautiful Skin Overnight Radiance Boost for All Skin Type. It is the best serum I have ever used.

Apart from moisturizing the face, we also need to remember to moisturize our hands with a good hand cream to prevent cracked, dry and flaky hands. Hello soft hands for that gentle touch!

Another part of our body that will need some TLC are our lips. My lips get so dry during the autumn/winter season so I apply a non-petroleum-based lip balm for better results.

How to make your make-up stay on all day

Black Beauty Image

There’s nothing as upsetting as spending hours getting your makeup just right only for it to fade away after a couple of hours. I find it so annoying.
Makeup helps to enhance your beauty but when your makeup fades or melts away during the day, its aim is defeated.
Here are some things you can do to make your makeup stay on all day:
1.    Exfoliate regularly
Makeup lasts longer when your face is smooth. This is because a smooth skin allows you to apply makeup evenly. The presence of dead skin cells can make your face rough. Exfoliation helps to clear away dead skin from your face, leaving it silky smooth. Exfoliate once or twice a week using a gentle scrub. A good face mask should be used at least once a week (more on face masks in my upcoming product review post).
2.    Cleanse your skin
Oily skin makes it difficult for the makeup to stay on longer. Using a gentle cleanser and a cotton ball, thoroughly cleanse your whole face. Do not neglect your neck. The cleanser will rid your skin of dirt, grime and oil right to the pores of your skin.
3.    Apply moisturizer correctly
After cleansing your skin, applying a moisturizer will keep your skin from staying dry and allow the makeup to be easily applied. When applying moisturizer, make sure you pick an oil-free moisturizer that is light weight. A moisturizer that contains SPF to protect your skin from the sun is a bonus. Apply a thin layer of moisturizer and allow it to sink into your skin.
4.    Apply a primer
A good primer helps to seal in the moisturizer and fill in the pores to give your skin a smooth even surface. A primer prevents your makeup from being absorbed in your skin. This will make your makeup last longer.
5.    Choose quality products
Using low quality products is another reason why your makeup does not last long. Quality products contain substances that will not only take care of your skin but also ensure your makeup lasts longer too. From my experience, the more expensive the beauty product, the longer it stays on. I find MAC lipsticks and powder stay on for ages, Estee Lauder Double Wear Foundation is the best in the market, English Mineral Makeup Kabuki Brushes are fab for blending, and I love the No 7 Airbrush Away Primer, it creates an amazing foundation.
6.    Layer your makeup
Makeup that is caked up on your face makes the makeup crumble in the creases. The right way to apply your makeup is to apply it one thin layer after another. This will make your makeup stay longer on your skin and creates a more natural look. This rule on layering doesn’t only apply to your skin but to your lips as well. Apply lipstick one thin layer at a time.
7.    Set the makeup with powder
After applying your makeup, set it in with some translucent powder. The powder will make your makeup smooth and get rid of excess oil from your skin. Make sure you give special attention to your under eyes by lightly brushing some powder there. The powder will seal up your makeup.
8.    Finish off with makeup spray
Makeup spray is a special spray that contains substances that will help seal the makeup in place and prevent it from melting away. It also helps to even out your makeup and make it look like natural skin.

These tips help my makeup stay on for as long as I need it to. How do you keep your makeup in place? Please share your tips in the comment section below.
