How to Manage Natural Afro Hair

I have been keeping my natural hair for almost 2 years now, and the journey has been like a roller coaster ride. Some days, I get so sick and tired of the high maintenance nature of my natural afro hair, I feel like relaxing it. But then, I stop and remember why I decided to keep my hair natural, and that keeps me going.

If you have been following my natural hair journey, you would know all about how unhealthy my hair was, which was the reason why I decided to keep my hair natural, free from chemicals.

My hair is now very healthy, and it is growing like weed, but it is so difficult to manage. Which is why I wear it in protective styles most times, and pop a wig on, which helps it grow.

I have learnt many tricks and tips when it comes to managing my natural hair. I have a very coarse hair texture, so it is extremely difficult to manage my hair, but what works and what doesn’t.

Here are a few tips that work for my hair and may work for yours –

 

Moisturise everyday

I moisturise my hair everyday with water and Almond Oil in a spray bottle. I have a very dry scalp, and my hair tends to lose moisture very quickly, so using just water does not help. The Almond Oil helps soften my hair and retain moisture, which is great for my scalp and growth of my hair.

Use a Deep Conditioner once a month

I use a deep conditioner once a month. This helps strengthen my hair, and leaves it shinning.

Use a Leave-in Conditioner

I use a Leave-in Conditioner everyday I have my afro out and twice a week when I have it in a protective style. It softens my hair, making it easy to manage, and it also helps in the growth.

Wash every week

I wash my hair every week with Shea Moisture Shampoo and Conditioner. I make sure I leave the conditioner in for about 15 minutes before washing it out, which helps to soften my hair.

 

Wear my hair in protective styles to sleep

I never go to bed without putting my hair in a protective style, making sure to tuck in the tips.

When the Boiler Breaks Down

Life is full of ups and downs, and sometimes, life happens and we are not prepared. Life happened in our house some weeks ago. Our 4-year-old boiler started acting up. This came as a rude shock because I didn’t expect our new boiler (it is just 4 years old) to start misbehaving so quickly.

It started with a loud whistling sound whenever it came on, which was annoying. Then it got louder and louder, and the water temperature started going warm and cold.

This is the first time the boiler has acted up. It has been fine for 4 winters now, and we have never had issues with our boiler in our previous homes. We usually get the boiler serviced once a year by a plumber (except that year we completely forgot, lol), and we have been fine so far, until now.

I was thankful the boiler started this drama in May. Imagine how depressing it would have been if it happened in the dead of winter! Having a cold shower would have been sickening.

Luckily for us, we were able to get the plumber that serviced our boiler last year, to come over. He came on the same day and had it checked out. It took him just seconds to figure what the problem was, it was pressure related (don’t ask), and he had it up and running in minutes.

The whole experience has brought my attention to how many of us are never ready for unexpected costs like a boiler breakdown. I couldn’t imagine what we would have done if we had to replace the entire boiler, or if the repair was going to cost us thousands of pounds. Luckily for us, it didn’t cost a penny, but what if we needed to get parts and stuff, we don’t have a boiler cover because we think it is money down the drain, but we have to revisit the idea of getting the boiler covered to avoid issues like this.

Karen Jill Elson is a 38-year-old English model, singer-songwriter and guitarist, and she is the cover girl for Harper’s Bazaar June 2017.

On the newsstands cover, Karen Elson is wearing a Gucci dress and Van Cleef & Arpels jewellery, and she looks fabulous. I love the photo, I think it is a great shot, the fox looks gorgeous with her, and the location –  a Palladian mansion in Kent, looks so beautiful. I wonder who owns it.

I must confess, I have never heard of Karen Elson until this cover, so although it looks like an interesting issue, I am not in hurry to read it. I would love to listen to her songs though, her new album sounds like it would be a good one, so I will be looking out for that on Spotify when next I am chanced.

Here, Karen Elson is wearing Dior Haute Couture, and looking magical! She has a very distinct look, with her slender figure, copper curls and milky pale skin. She is the definition of a wild English rose.

I view him as a 50/50 partner and I would never want to have his role diminished. We adore our kids and we’re close – we have to be for our children.

‘In the days when my parents split up, it was “never speak to your father again” kind of thing, and I don’t have that attitude at all… I’ve seen when people have terrible break-ups, when a person is bitter, it’s not good for your kids, it’s not good for your family. I’ve seen a lot of that, and I don’t ever want it.’
