5 Style Tips for Women

OOTD Cape Dress

Sense of style is a personal thing, and it takes ages to develop a true personal style. Some of us are born with a flair for fashion and style, some of us develop it as we go along, but one thing is for sure, our sense of style evolves as we age. Most of the outfits I thought were stylish 5 years ago, I won’t be caught wearing them today.

Our sense of style projects a message, a message that is received as soon as we step into a room, even before we open our mouth. So it is very important to make sure your appearance is speaking the language you want it to speak, and sending the right message.

Here are 5 style tips you could implement today:

Pay Attention to your Self-esteem

Before we talk about fashion and style tips, we need to talk about the most important tip of all. Your self-esteem is very crucial to how you see yourself. If you don’t feel good, you won’t believe you look good, no matter how good you look. Working on your confidence is the first step to building your personal style. You have to feel like a million bucks to look like a million bucks, and convince others that you are a million bucks. If you don’t love yourself, no one will.

Pay Attention to your Undergarments

Your underwear sets the foundation for your outfit, so for your outfit to look great, the foundation has to be solid. I know many women neglect their bras and underpants because no one sees them when they are out and about, and they are so wrong. If you are wearing a full pant underneath a bodycon dress for example,  I will see it, just like if you are wearing the wrong bra size, people can tell from the outside. Get rid of the bras that don’t fit and go shopping for new ones. Your style will thank you for it.

Start paying attention to your underwear, they have the power to take your outfit to a whole new level. For bras, I love to shop Victoria’s Secret and Ultimo. I have tried many and I think these brands have the best bras in the market. For pants, I like to shop Debenhams and M&S, they have the best sets of panties, and super affordable, compared to others.

Less is More

Less is truly more. When it comes to colours, prints, patterns, makeup and accessories, I like to keep them as simple as possible. I try not to have too many colours on at the same time, I stick to one ‘busy’ print, pattern or accessory. I also try to stick to the makeup rule of emphasizing the eyes or the lips, but never both, and these tips work.

Less is more when it comes to style, but then again, whatever rocks your boat!

Invest in Statement Pieces/Accessories

Now this is a tip I need to follow a lot more this year. I need to invest in more statement pieces and accessories, especially jewellery, bags and shoes, because I believe they are good investment, and are classic and timeless. Building a personal style is really not a day’s job, but I wish it was, I would have my entire wardrobe stocked with everything I need.

Know your Body Shape

If there is any tip you follow here, make sure it is this, next to the self-esteem tip of course, I think they are the most important. To dress your body shape stylishly, you need to know what your body shape is. I covered female body shapes extensively on this blog some months ago, so you really have no excuse, if you still don’t know your body shape. Catch up if you missed the series.

So there you have them, my 5 style tips for women.

Female Body Shapes: The Athletic Woman

Princess Diana

So last week, I wrote about The Pocket Rocket Woman, so this week is all about the Athletic Woman.

The athletic woman is usually a tomboy, she has a defined, toned, V-shape silhouette, she is more slender than skinny, and has broad shoulders and slim hips. This female body shape has become quite popular since the 1980s, many women aspire to have this body shape. Late Princess Diana, Madonna, Cameron Diaz Kendall Jenner and Katharine Hepburn, rocked and are rocking this body shape, they have made women want this shape.

This athletic woman has small breasts and narrow hips so most pieces look good on her toned body shape which is why most models fall into this body shape category.

Here are the DOs and the DONTs of this female body shape:

DOs

  • Your toned shoulders and back are your greatest assets. Flaunt them.
  • Go for light tailored pieces, they suit your body shape.
  • Opt for smock style shirts with puffed sleeves to soften arms and shoulders.
  • Go for tops and dresses with high neck lines, like halter neck styles; these add inches to smaller busts.
  • Go for dresses in jersey and chiffon with patterns and floaty skirts that instantly soften angular lines, these pieces add some girliness and create curves in all the right places.
  • Opt for layered and wrap tops and dresses as they add dimension to the body and create the illusion of a waist.

DONTs

  • Avoid tight, clingy pieces, they will highlight the fact that you have no waist.
  • Avoid baggy tops, unless you are rocking it with a belt or any other detailing, it may seem like the easiest solution but it will make your slender body shape look very shapeless.
  • Avoid vertical striped pieces as they hide curves.
  • Avoid wearing sky-high heels, you will appear longer.

Female Body Shapes: The Pocket Rocket Shaped Woman

Kylie-Minogue-GQ-Men-of-the-Year-Awards-in-London-020

So last week, I wrote about the Balcony Shaped Woman, if you missed that post, catch up here.

This week is all about the Pocket Rocket Woman. I never knew such a shape existed until I started researching the various female body shapes and that is one of the things I love about the Female Body Shapes series, it opens my eyes to facts I never knew.

The Pocket Rocket-shaped woman is petite and curvy – some of these women are blessed with very sexy hourglass measurements on their miniature frames,  celebrities like Kylie Minogue and Elizabeth Taylor are examples of the Pocket Rocket curvy woman. Others like  Natalie Portman, Clara Bow, and Norma Desmond have less symmetrical proportions.

Here are the DOs and DONTs of this shape:

DOs

  1. Keep your accessories small and simple so they don’t overshadow you
  2. Go for fitted pieces to show off or create curves
  3. Opt for high heels to give you an illusion of a longer frame
  4. Go for colour block outfits, they make the body appear longer
  5. Go for V-neck pieces, they give the illusion of a longer body
  6. If hats are right up your street, go for hats with small proportions
  7. Embrace your style with custom accessories.

Tips:

Since their development in the 1960s, pin badges are still an evergreen element of the fashion industry. Custom pin badges are as much about self-expression as they have trending. It is common to see them on red carpets, catwalks, fashion week street shoots, and as regular items of luxury brands. And it can even be preserved as a collection!

DONTs

  1. Avoid maxi skirts and dresses, they will make you appear shorter.
  2. Avoid wearing any bold pattern or colour for the same reason listed above.
  3. Stay away from dungarees and shorts, it will make you look like a child.
  4. Stay away from ponchos, they will swallow up your small frame instantly.
