Mental health is more important than physical health

“Without a sound mind, there is no body” – Fashion and Style Police.

Mental health is something I have decided to blog. I have written many articles about mental health, depression and anxiety in the last few years. You can catch up on those posts in my lifestyle category. This topic is close to my heart because almost everyday, I hear or read about someone dealing with mental health issues. I think there is a lot more to be said about it.

Our mental health is more important than our physical health. I remember having a conversation about this with a friend sometime ago and she didn’t understand how our mind could be more important than our body but it is. Many of us take our mental health for granted. We pay attention to our physical health and everything else, but pay no mind to our mind which is the important part of us. Without a sound mind, there is no body, and many people struggle to understand that bit but it is fact. Having said that, our physical health is also very important. If we neglect to take care of our body, that could lead to many health issues that will eventually start affecting our mental health.

What is mental health?

Mental health or emotional health like some professionals like to call it, is our overall psychological well-being. It includes the way we feel about ourself, relationships and our ability to manage our feelings and deal with difficulties. Mental health plays a major role in our ability to manage our physical health, which is why I think it is more important to have a healthy state of mind because that will help you achieve a healthy physical health.

Paying attention to our physical health problems and neglecting our mental health issues will only cause more problems. Both are closely related and very important, but I believe our priority should be given to our mental health.

Why the comparison?

Many of us tend to ignore our mental health. It is not something we can see so for many of us, we tend to neglect it until it becomes a major issue. Which is why I am writing this post. Our mind needs to be catered to. We should remember self-care is not a luxury, it is an essential. Spending time caring for our minds should be a priority. Doing more of what makes us happy should be our target. Focusing on everyone except ourselves (hello mums) would only drain us. We need to make out time everyday for ourselves to protect our state of mind.

In conclusion

Both our mental health and physical health are important, and should not be taken for granted. I am not a Doctor, Counsellor or Therapist, but I my advice is if you continue to feed your mind, your body will remain healthy. A healthy mind leads to a healthy body. So pay special attention to your mental health.

What to do when you want counseling but your spouse doesn’t

Like I said in my previous relationship post, marriage is a lot of work. It takes time and effort to have a happy marriage. Which is why we must always continue to improve our relationship with our spouse. I have been married for almost 10 years and I know how much work is involved. Good marriages struggle for many reasons. Some examples of these struggles are centred around infidelity, finances, in-laws interference, lack of intimacy, an addiction, unhealthy behaviours (manipulating, belittling, name-calling etc.), and so on.

If you marriage is dealing with any of these issues, you and your spouse may need some help from a qualified therapist. But the issue is, these days, many people shy away from counseling for various reasons. Many associate counseling with failure. To them, it means they have failed at their marriage. Others are just too ashamed to open up to a third-party and would rather keep at it or work away.

What to do when you want counseling but your spouse doesn’t

So what do you do when you decide your marriage or relationship needs help but your spouse doesn’t want to speak with anyone? There are 2 options. You could decide to continue being unhappy in your marriage and pretend you are happy and fulfilled. Or you could try following these tips –

Give it some time

You could try giving it some time to see if your spouse changes his/her mind. Sometimes, time could help shed some light on the relationship issues and how to go about solving them. The last thing you would want is for your spouse to agree to see a Therapist with you grudgingly. You won’t get any results that way.

See a Therapist online

If your spouse is not comfortable with the idea of going to see a Therapist, you could try having online counseling sessions. Your spouse may be more open to these sessions as you can have it from the comfort of your homes and still achieve the same results. Online counseling works great for busy people or when your preferred Therapist is far away.

Think outside the box

You can try reading relationship books and blogs with your spouse. There are also various marriage podcasts and movies available you may both find helpful. Sometimes we need to think outside the box when we find ourselves in difficult situations like when you think your marriage needs help and your spouse disagrees.

Work on yourself

When we are dealing with issues, it is always easier to blame someone else for all the problems, and play victim. But the first step in healing and improving is to work on ourselves. So that means reading self-improvement resources and seeing a qualified Therapist if needed to discuss issues. Having a great mental health is essential for a healthy marriage. So take a good look at the mirror and work on yourself.

Thanks for reading. Do feel free to leave a comment telling me what you think about relationship issues and going for couple counselling. Also, please remember to share this post on your social media platforms.

How to Deal with Toxic People and Protect your Mental Health

Toxic people are everywhere so you will come in contact with a few at some point in your life. We have them in schools, offices, families, communities and even in churches. If you are a healthy person, you will find dealing with toxic people draining. I know from experience how draining they can be. Toxic people can drain the life out of you, that undergoing therapy may be the only to regain your sanity.

I have had my own fair share of dealing with toxic people and situations. And I still spot them every now and again. They are everywhere, which makes it almost impossible to completely avoid them. Which is why it is important to know how to deal with toxic people, and protect your mental health.

Who are toxic people?

Toxic People are like emotional vampires that drain your energy. They are the people in your life who constantly complain about everything and anything. These people always put the blame on someone else and never take responsibility for their actions or inactions.

Toxic People always turn things around so things you thought they had done wrong are suddenly your fault. They also tend to overreact to bad events and usually have a chaotic life, full of drama and negativity.

How do you deal with toxic people?

Dealing with toxic people is quite easy once you know who they are. The first task is identifying the toxic in your life. Once that is done, you will be able to recognise them for what they really are, and ignore their negative energy.

The second task is dealing with the toxic people. The best way of going about this is by minimising contact with them as much as possible. Once you learn to ignore them and not take in their negative energy, you will be fine.

It can be hard to ignore certain situations and people sometimes, but ignoring these people is one of the best things you can do for your mental health. If you get drawn into their negative way of life, the chaos and drama may consumed you, leaving you a shadow of your former self. Rise above them and keep your distance.

Protecting your mental health with some therapy

For some of us, it may have taken years to recognise certain people as toxic. This relationship with these people may have left us drained and feeling inadequate. If this is you, then some therapy may be required. Your mental health will thank you for it.

Therapy will help you train yourself when coming in contact with energy draining people. You will learn how to switch off mentally when the complaining, fault-finding and energy-draining behaviour begins.

If the toxic person in your life is a friend or family member you care about, you can encourage them to go into therapy. An experienced Therapist may be able to solve the underlying issue behind the negative way of life.

In conclusion

If you have noticed certain people always trigger aggression, frustration, depression, sadness or any other type of negative emotion in you, then looking within may help. Changing the way you react to them may help. You need to understand that you have no control over their behaviour, but you can control yours.

Pay attention to your reaction when these situations present themselves. Ignoring and zoning out does help massively. If your reaction does little or nothing to help, then just reduce the presence of these toxic people in your lives.

I have read loads of books on Psychology as it is an area I have strong interest in for some weird reason. I will be reviewing a couple of the eBooks I have read sometime in the new year, so look at for those review posts if you are interested.

How do you deal with toxic people in your life? How do you ensure you take care of your mental health?
