Fashion Career Ideas for Stay at Home Mothers

If you are a stay at home mother and fashion lover, there are a number of business ideas you could start-up this 2017. Even if it brings just a little amount of money each month, every little does help. And having a form of business you could do from home as a stay at home mother can help get rid of the baby brain and keep you sane.

I have been a work from home mother since 2013, and I have tried all sorts of fashion career business ideas and non fashion business ideas, so I have a wealth of knowledge in these areas.

Here are some fashion carer ideas I have tried as a stay at home mother –

Fashion Blogging

I started blogging before I became a mum, so I just carried on. Blogging is one of the best things I have ever started in my life. And I would stay at home mothers that have an interest in writing and photography to start a blog. Even in the early days when no one is reading and no one is paying you to blog, it feels good to just keep your mind and soul busy doing something else outside caring for your children. And as your blog grows, then the money starts to roll in.

Blogging is not a get rich scheme. You won’t make money overnight or much in the first 2 years. But if you have the passion to carry on against all odds, you could be making well over £1000 in a month, receiving samples every week, invites to great events and reviewing amazing locations. There is no fixed time as to when you start making money from your blog, it varies from blog to blog, from niche to niche. So you must have the passion and determination to keep at it.

Fashion Vlogging is another career you could start on YouTube from home. I am not a vlogger, so I can’t really comment on this idea but I know many vloggers who have been vlogging for years and make a good full-time income out of it, so it is worth thinking about.

Fashion Writing

A fashion writer writes fashion articles for other blogs and websites. I am a freelance writer as well as blogger. I write for a few websites and I get paid per article. This is a great career choice for stay at home mothers that have a flair for fashion and writing. You could be paid up to £50 or even more for a 500 words article. Most of my clients find me through Fashion and Style Police or social media.

I don’t use any of the content mills because the rates are extremely low for what the clients usually ask for. But I would advise anyone thinking of starting a fashion writing career to sign up to these content mills (I did in the beginning), and see what they have to offer. Your case may be different from mine.

Writing a fashion book is also a great idea. Also you could look at writing for free for some publications to get your content out there to put on your portfolio, or just have a blog as your portfolio and market the hell out of it.

Fashion Styling

If you have a good eye for fashion and enjoy styling people, you could consider a fashion styling career from home. There are various short online courses you could take from the comfort of your home to get you on the right path to your online fashion styling career. I considered being an online fashion stylist at a point in my life. I took a styling course and completed it withing a year. I was hungry and ready to style clients, and I did style a few for some time, but I later decided it was not the right career for me. It may work out perfectly for you so look this up.

Online Fashion Boutique

I have considered having an Online Fashion Boutique many times. I have done my research and I can say it is a lucrative but saturated business. It is worth going into if you have something new to bring to the table, say your own designs. If you are just going to sell pieces from China and the likes, you may struggle to make a living. Having said that, I know quite a good number of stay at home mothers running successful online fashion boutiques with beautiful items. So it is a business idea worth considering.

Do you run any of these businesses? How has it been for you? Please share your thoughts.

5 Ways to be a Fabulous Fashion Blogger

There are so many fashion blogs these days, it is like a new blog pops up every second, and most of the time, that blog is a fashion blog.

I understand why most of these blogs are fashion blogs. Many people think as long as they have nice pieces, they can blog about them. But Fashion Blogging is a lot more than that. Yes you need nice pieces if you intend to blog about your personal style, but for your blog to stand out from the rest, it needs to be fabulous. Here is how you do that:

Be consistent and regular

To make it as a blogger, regardless of your niche, you have to be consistent and regular. Your readers have to know when to expect a post and they should not be left waiting for too long. I check my favourite blogs almost every day, and I will be disappointed to not see a new post(s) when I check. Being consistent and regular with your blog content is one way to be a fabulous fashion blogger.

Tip: Blog as regularly as you can to build your content and following.

Show off your personal style

For me to take you seriously as a fashion blogger, I would want to see your personal style. If I wanted just fashion tips and trends, I would check the likes of ELLE and Vogue. I also love to read about fashion tips, trends, news and all, on blogs, but I like to see the blogger’s personal style too. So showing off your personal style regularly is one way to stand out from the crowd of fashion bloggers. However you must have a personal style to nail this.

Tip: If you want a general fashion blog, have a mixture of fashion posts –  outfit posts, celebrity style, fashion news, trends and so on. I wrote 30 blog posts ideas for fashion blogs some months, so have a read if you are struggling to come with post ideas.

Pretty pictures

Your pictures have to stand out for you to be recognised in the fashion blogging industry. Invest in a great camera and get someone to take your shots. You could also get a photographer to take your outfit photos, I know many fashion bloggers who do. Tripods are also handy for when you are alone.

Tip: Avoid taking photos indoors as much as you can. Indoor photos are usually not the prettiest. Invest in a DSLR.

Active on social media

Have your social media accounts set up. For fashion bloggers, I recommend Instagram, Pinterest, Twitter and Facebook, in that order. Post varied and regular content to your social media accounts. Follow relevant accounts in the fashion industry and work on growing your tribe.

Tip: Follow fashion bloggers, PRs, fashion brands, fashion designers and anyone else that catches your fancy. It is called social media for a reason, so be social.

Avoid fake goods

I see so many fashion bloggers posing with fake designer bags and shoes, and it is such a major turn off for me. I personally can’t stand counterfeit goods. I wrote extensively about this awhile ago, and it worries me that so many fashion bloggers think that their fastest way to the top is to pose rocking fake items, because they can’t afford the real deal.

I believe you should own whatever you have and can afford. If all you can afford is Primark, it is fine. It is all in the style. If you can afford Givenchy, that is fantastic, own it. But please don’t show up rocking a fake Chanel bag and expect people to take you seriously.

The whole idea behind personal style bloggers is you showing your readers how to work with what they have or aspire to have, and give them style ideas. That should be the main focus, and not how many “designer items” you have.

Many bloggers come into fashion blogging missing this vital point and they struggle from there. They wonder why no one is reading or taking them seriously.

Tip: Stick to original items you can afford. Do not buy items only to return back to the store, your blog is not a catalogue!

Inspiration or Outright Copying?

Fashion Blogger in UK Image

Lets talk getting inspiration or outright copying in the blogosphere. There’s a very thing line between inspiration and outright copy. It’s a good thing to be inspired by other bloggers. You only have a problem when you are ‘too inspired’. Whether it is photography, design or writing, copying continues to be a serious problem in the blogging industry and I wonder why. Imagine spending hours thinking, researching and crafting your masterpiece, only for someone to copy almost everything you’ve done. It makes me angry and upset just thinking about it.
We should all strive to produce unique quality content every time. And we should take pride in our work. The uniqueness we posses is what makes us stand out as individuals, as bloggers. No two human beings can create the same content. You would have to have lived my life, and I would have had to live yours!

Being original is so very important, but it is ok to be inspired. We all get inspiration from somewhere, I know I get inspiration from some of my favourite blogs. Inspiration gives birth to something new, while copying is a reproduction of the original. Have you come across a blog whose content sparks an idea? The blog post becomes a starting point, a foundation upon which you build something that reflects who you are and your style or brand. What is produced is a completely different variation from the blog that sparked the idea. Copying does not do that. It clones the original. It makes no addition, no change in perspective absolutely nothing. The copied content is just a mirror of the original.
An inspired piece is backed up with hard work, while a copied piece requires little or no effort. When a blog inspires you to create something, you’re always motivated to do your own research to make your piece unique. To make your work stand out, you put in time and effort to make your article reflect your views. The other blog inspired you to do your discovery and make your own post. A copied article is hardly backed by any effort. It is written down almost verbatim. The only time spent was to recreate the original blog post, which can be very annoying for the copied blogger.
A blog post is inspired if it reflects you but it’s copied if it reflects the originator of the post. It is as simple as that. When you write a blog post that was inspired by someone else, your blog post will always reflect your personality, your thoughts and your feelings. Someone else might have inspired your article but there’s hardly any trace of that person’s thoughts, personality or style. The post truly reflects who you are. It’s easy to tell if a blog post is copied. A copied blog post reflects only the original owner’s thoughts and personality. Although you reproduced it, there is no trace of anything that reflects you in the article.
There are obvious differences between inspiration and copying. No matter how cautious you try to be, it’s always good to play safe. Don’t copy. Be original. But seek inspiration and give credit where due. It’s only fair to acknowledge the originator even if you didn’t copy.
