Working from Home and Mental Health

Working from home is tough, especially when you have other responsibilities to bother. I find some days are harder than others. On some days I am struggling to catch up on my endless to-do list and dealing with all sorts of work requests. Which is good because it means that I am busy, therefore my bank balance would be busy. But then I have to ensure I hit all deadlines and that my 2 kids are happy. Then on quiet days, I panic and worry about it being quite, and me not being busy. Even though I was so busy a few days ago. It sounds mad but it is true.

Working from home is beautiful. It is what I have always dreamed of and I am happy I am finally living my dream. But it also takes its toll on my mental health sometimes. I am a worrier by nature. I worry about silly things most of time, and I do get anxious sometimes. So the stresses of working from home, on my own most of the time, with me being my own boss comes with its pros and cons, like any other job. There is no one to blame if something goes wrong. No one really understands how I go about what I do so it can be tricky to explain, and I don’t know anyone going what I do in real life, so it can be lonely sometimes.

Having said that, I won’t change what I do for anything in the world. The pros of being a freelancer outweighs the cons for me massively, so that is not going to change. Which means I have to find a solution to my worry. So how do I stop worrying and how do I take care of my mental health? I am not one to dwell on problems, I always look for solutions instead.

Here are a few things I will be doing to help my work and state of mind.

Early to Bed

I normally work for as many hours as I can. I am usually in bed after midnight on most days, which is not good enough, since I am usually awake at 6am thanks to my early bird kids. Which leaves me feeling horrible in the mornings.

Early to bed is my going forward. I have decided to go to bed as early as possible on most nights, so I can get 8 hours sleep. I work better when I am well rested.

Take Time Off

I am hoping to take more time off work this year. I usually continue working even on Holidays, except for Christmas, which isn’t great but you don’t get to take many days off when you work for yourself.

Going forward, I plan to take some more time off work, regardless of how busy or quiet it is. When I need it, I will take it. I also need to try switching off work a bit more, especially on weekends. Speaking to counsellors would also be helpful if you are dealing with mental health issues.

Motivate Myself

Motivating myself is easily done. I am good at motivating myself naturally. I always says the fear of having no money and not being able to work from home are my greatest motivators.

I need to keep myself motivated. I find business, self-help and inspirational books very motivating. So I make sure I read few chapters of a good book on my Kindle every day.

Enjoy the Outdoors

I do the school run so I get out of the house everyday. Weekends are usually packed with all sort of activities, which means I get to do other things outside the house which is great.

This is going to continue even when the kids are on holiday. Weather permitting and with the kiddies’ cooperation, I aim to get out of the house everyday, even if it is just for long walks or to let loose in the garden. Being outdoors is great for general health. I also plan to work in my garden during the summer months.

Spend Wisely

Working from home and running your own business means you usually get to manage your money yourself. This can be a blessing and a curse depending on how you are with money. I am quite good with me. I am more of a saver than a spender, and this has helped me in the unpredictable world of freelancing.

I plan to continue the way I am with money. Spending wisely and saving as much money as I can so I don’t worry too much when work is quiet.

How do you find working from home? Does it affect your mental health?

Perfect Online Careers for Mums

Life as a working mum can be difficult. In fact, for some, it can seem impossible. Childcare is so expensive, to the point that many families find themselves in the complicated situation of not being able to afford to live on one income, but also being unable to afford the childcare for both parents to go to work. Some of us may be entitled to some free childcare when our children are 3, but if you’ve been out of work for nearly four years, it can be hard to secure a job that fits around your family. Even if you can work, flexibility is a huge problem.

Offering flexible working has a massive range of advantages for employers, but many don’t do it. Most nurseries and childcare providers close at 5-6pm, but workers are expected to work later. Even finishing at 5 pm doesn’t allow much time to travel in rush hour traffic. Then, the children start school, and somehow it gets harder. Now you can only work between 10 am and 2 pm unless your childminder can do a school pick up or your school provides after-school care and breakfast clubs. What is a working mum to do?

Well, fortunately, the internet can help. There are a wide variety of ways to make money online, even with no experience or qualifications. Working online can offer you complete flexibility. You can work around your children’s needs when they are in bed or around school times. You may still choose to use childcare, to give yourself some quiet time to work. But, it will be around your needs, and at times that suit you, not your employer. You’ll also have more time at home with your children; you’ll enjoy it more because you’ll be less stressed out and you’ll generally be happier. Online work can also offer you a fantastic way to make good money. You’ll face no discrimination; you won’t be passed over for promotions because you’ve got children, you will have total control. Sound good? Here are a few things that you could do.

Blogging

Blogging can be a fantastic career, and more people than ever are turning their hobby blogs into a business. It can take time to build up to making a substantial income, but you could make some money from advertising and affiliate marketing straight away. To start working with brands, selling extras, like membership to a private section of your site, or eBooks, you’ll need to out in a lot of time and effort. But, it will be yours. Your blog will be your business, and you’ll be able to do whatever you want with it. Just make sure you protect yourself with help from physicaladdress.com and by not sharing absolutely everything with your audience.

A career as a virtual assistant can be perfect for mums. Now so many bloggers make money, and so many people have their own online business, there is definitely a place for talented assistants to make money from the comfort of your own home. Businesses and bloggers might pay a VA a few hours a day or week (to suit you and them) to organise social media, schedule posts, reply to emails and blog comments, edit photos and posts, arrange meetings and more. Basically, anything that can be done online, a VA can do. The more you offer, and the higher the quality of your work, the more you will be able to charge. In the UK the average VA earns £25+, with room for growth over time.

Writing

Many of us haven’t written anything since we left school. But, that doesn’t mean that you can’t do it anymore. Many blogs and websites will pay for well-written content and guest posts. Practice your skills on your blog, and then start pitching for work. Freelancer.com can be a great place to find work or look for “write for us” or “submit a post” buttons on your favourite websites. You might not make much to start with, but once you’ve found sites that pay well and like the work you can start to do well. The biggest advantage of writing is that you can take on as much or as little work as you want.

Graphic Design

Like writers, graphic designers can do very well online. Many blogs and small businesses are looking for ways to make their sites more professional, and design plays a huge part. Set up as a web designer or graphic designer and you could easily find work online.

Remember, if you are making money online, you need to register as self-employed and track your income ready to declare at the end of the tax year.

Having said that, my fitness life went downhill once I started working from home. Prior to working from home, I had a great fitness routine with my gym workouts and all. But once I popped my kids and started working from home full-time, it became a lot harder to find time for exercise. This time last year, I added a few pounds and felt so heavy. I struggled to get rid of the weight but I got there in the end. My body weight is now back to what it used to be and I am happy with it. I also feel lighter and more healthy, which is great.

Going for long walks really helped me lose the weight. I enjoy going for long walks, especially when I am alone. I like to admire nature, while listening to some good music and taking in the beauty that surrounds me and the freshness in the air. That is why I love my school runs. Since the kiddies started pre school, I get out of the house everyday and I also get to walk back and forth alone, in peace, which is great for my mind.

My fitness live is going in the direction I need it to go. As a work-from-home mother, I have to consciously make an effort to stay fit. The GymCube website has been a massive help. The fitness videos are so useful and I find them easy to do at home. Good to know that the excess weight gained is all in the past. I didn’t gain a lot but I felt heavier and my clothes didn’t fit, so that was the cue I needed to get myself back in shape. I am happy with my current weight (I am a size UK 10 or 12 depending on where I shop). All that is needed now is to strengthen and define my body some more.

Being Underweight or Overweight is not Cool

I see a lot of people both online and offline, who are actively promoting their unhealthy body weights. They act like it is ok to be massively underweight or overweight. If the weight is caused by a health related issue, that is completely different. However, if it is not, then something should be done about it.

Blogger thieves & how to deal with them image

If you are truly happy with being overweight or underweight, that is fine but please stop promoting these unhealthy lifestyle on social media.  Being overweight/underweight is not cool and it is not healthy. Stop acting like it is! If you find yourself in such a situation, like I did a year ago, do something about it. If you are honestly happy with your size regardless of what it is, then stay quiet about it. The going back and forth on social media with trolls and fans alike is disturbing. You could be a giving a teenager struggling to lose or gain weight, a thumbs up for remaining the way she is. This is not OK.

This has been on my mind for some time now and I am glad I finally got my thoughts down. What do you think? Is being underweight or overweight now cool on online?
