The Truth about Freelancing as a Parent

Although making the transition from a 9 to 5 to being a freelancer is worth it, the journey can be a tough one. Freelancing requires a lot of hard work, discipline and perseverance. And juggling freelancing with parenthood can be a handful to deal with.

There are, of course, a lot of upsides to being a freelancer. You get to spend more time with your family and never miss out on special events or moments with the people you love and care about.

Be this as it may, this doesn’t mean that you should close your eyes to the realities that freelancing presents especially as a parent.  Here are some truths about freelancing as a parent that you need to know.

  1. You may experience dry spells

Unlike a 9-to-5 where you know what your take home every month is, income from freelancing projects are hardly stable. There will be months when your freelancing income is great while some months may be frighteningly low.

As a parent with a lot of responsibilities, fluctuation in your income may prevent you from making sure that you meet your family’s needs. Your income may go up and down but your responsibilities remain the same.

Depending only on freelancing projects won’t be enough. It will be a wise decision to create multiple sources of income, especially passive income. This will give you something to fall back on when you’re experiencing a shortage of projects for the month.

  1. Flexibility of freelancing gives you the opportunity to be there for your children when they need you

Unforeseen situations like accidents or sudden illness can mess with your normal work schedule and it may be difficult to get permission from the office if you work in a 9-to-5. But as a freelancer, you have the flexibility to take care of your children when they’re ill and injured.

The only downside to such sudden unforeseen circumstances is that when the payments from clients don’t come in on time you may be stuck in a tight corner.

  1. Clients can pay late and it will disorganize your plans

In order to ensure steady income, freelancers have to make sure that clients keep to their financial commitments. However, sometimes clients may not keep their word and the payment comes in late. Some clients even fail to pay and you may get nothing at all.

This is a frequent occurrence in the freelance industry and this can negatively affect the financial responsibility to your children.

  1. You’ll have to contend with shortage of time

It takes a lot of discipline to be a full-time freelancer and you need to be especially phenomenal at managing your time. When you’re a parent your time is divided between your children and your freelance work. This may mean that after taking care of your energetic kids you need to make do with the little time left to dedicate to your work.

However, with a little adjustment and proper arrangement of priorities it is possible to effectively manage your time with your work and with your children.

How do you freelance and parent at the same time? Do you deal with any of these issues?

Outfit Post – Hello Autumn

Hello October! We woke up today and realised it is officially Autumn. Or Fall like my American friends call it. The heating would be coming on anytime from now, and the leaves have gone brown. I like Autumn weather. It is a beautiful season and the chill isn’t always freezing cold, which is a good thing. It also means I can start to play dress up with my scarves, jackets, trainers and boots. Which I have been looking forward to doing kind of.

Autumn fashion is all about light layers and cool colours. I am still in the process of sorting out my Autumn/Winter wardrobe, so here is probably my last summerish look for the year. Enjoy it..

The pink shirt is a new wardrobe addition. I got it some months ago in the US. I really like the design and pink colour. It is a shirt that you can just throw on with a pair of jeans and you are good to go. The quality of the shirt is also great. It is from a trusted brand so I wasn’t expecting anything less.

The metallic sneakers are also new from Italy. I am super in love with the metallic shade and the design. The sneakers are super trendy and easy to style. I think it goes well with the pieces I have on. It is also very comfy which is a plus. Life is too short to walk around in uncomfortable shoes.

I must confess, I would miss the casual summer looks. They are so easy to style and dress up. Wearing layers of clothing would have to take some time before I get used to the trend all over again. Thanks to the longest summer ever we had, I have been styling summer looks from April up until September. But it is now time for Autumn Fashion.

6 Ways to Make Your Flight Smoother

Traveling is fun. There’s nothing as awesome as walking on exotic beaches, going sightseeing with members of the family and enjoying the ambiance of rich culture and history. But before you get enough of the thrill of travel you have to face the hassles of getting to your destination by plane.

The long queues, the non-stop security checks and the tense atmosphere at the airport can rob you off the joy and excitement of traveling. However there’s a way around it all. What if I told you that you could have a smooth stress-free flight?

Here are 6 ways you can make that happen.

  1. Scout for credit cards that give better seats at affordable rates (or even for free)

There are a lot of credit cards that provide exclusive freebies for their customers. If you’re the type who travels often, getting the right credit card will help open you to a lot of opportunities. One of such opportunities is better seats on the airplane.

Based on your spending on the credit card, you’re given points at every purchase. These points could help secure for you amazing discounts and even offer you a seat for free. Make sure you check what travel benefits your credit card can offer you.

  1. Bypass the long queue at security checks

The wait at security checks can be a nightmare where you’re asked to take off your shoes and belts and remove your laptop and liquids from your carry-on bag.  The process is long, slow and cumbersome.

However there’s a security programme that allows for quick checks. When you apply for Global Entry, you’re receive PreCheck which will help speed up the whole process of security checks at the airport. So instead of taking off your shoes and waiting in a queue, you’ll have your fingerprints and passport scanned. And you’re done!

  1. Keep the kids occupied

Unlike adults who can patiently bear delays, kids may not be as tolerant. Running after your kids while you take care of your travel arrangements can be quite a handful. The best way to deal with such a situation is to get your kids occupied.

Arm yourself with a tablet with videos, books and games your child can occupy themselves with. You don’t have to invest in an expensive tablet like the iPad, but you can opt for Leapfrog which is a cheaper alternative. It is also more educational. You should also have picture books, colouring books and crayons at the ready.

  1. Order airport meals in advance

If you’re feeling a little peckish and you dread waiting for your order, then there’s a simple solution to the problem. Some airlines have apps that allow you to order your meal in advance so that you don’t have to stand in the queue to get your order. Once your order is ready, all you have to do is pick it up.

  1. Make sure that you’ve got trip delay coverage

Delays are inevitable when traveling. And you can never predict when you may be delayed. Thanks to some really nifty credit cards that provide trip delay coverage, you’re compensated for the delays. The credit card reimburses you for hotel rooms, missing luggage and even meals.

  1. Enjoy lounge access

There are a lot of places to lounge while you’re waiting for your flight. But oftentimes those spots are crowed and the customer service is not all that great. Some credit cards provide you with access to lounges that are more comfortable with better customer service and you won’t have to pay the annual membership fee to enjoy what the lounge has to offer.
