Self employment – Charge what you deserve

I have been self employed for about 6 years now and I have seen it all. The clients that never pay up until you chase them and those that wait until the very last day to pay. I have seen clients that want all for nothing. They are happy to pay you peanuts and keep all the profits for themselves. Earning money as a self employed person is hard work. Don’t believe the stories that tell you it is easy to earn a living from home because it is far from easy. Trust me, I have 6 plus years worth of experience to know that being a self employed person, running your own business from home is hard. Which is why you should charge what you deserve.

My reason for doing this

I found myself working from home full-time after my twins were born. Going back to my old job was not an option. I hated it and the commute and income won’t be worth the hassle at all, so I ended up focusing on making money online. It worked! I started earning a full time living wage from this blog and my freelance jobs (mainly copywriting and blogger outreach). It wasn’t easy. I had to work every free hour I got and I hardly slept all those years, but the money started coming in.

It got easier as the twins got older and started pre school and now primary school. I have more free time to focus on my hustle and even throw in studying for a whole new degree. However, the journey has been a rollercoaster ride and has taught me a lot. What kept me going all these years was my “why”. To be a happy self employed person, you have to have a “why” because you will need to remember the reason when the days get tough.

Which is why I charge what I deserve

I love what I do and the opportunities it brings are too numerous to mention but I also have my own fair share of dealing with people who don’t want to pay the right amount for what they want. A really funny email came in yesterday and it was the lowest fee I have ever been offered and it make me giggle. Obviously I didn’t bother replying but I am pleased with how far I have come because on a good day I would have been fuming at the audacity of the email.

My rates are my rates. I charge what I deserve and I don’t apologise for it. I believe there is value in my work and I would now let anyone take advantage of me by accepting low fees just because that is what they are willing to pay. The first rule when it comes to self employment or running your business is to charge what you deserve. There is enough to go around for everyone if people stop being greedy and I believe to unblock the flow of abundance, we need to charge the right amount of money. There will always be people who will happily pay your rates once you are comfortable asking for it.

When it comes to self employment, the pros outweigh the cons massively for me. Which is why I am still doing what I do full-time for now. It is great to be able to work from home. I won’t charge that for anything now. Are you self employed? Do you feel you charge what you deserve? Do drop your comments in the comment section below.

Caring for my hair this autumn

*PR samples and Affiliate links.

The weather has been really cold in the last couple days here in Cheshire. I am so happy I have my natural hair in a protective style. The cold weather tends to break my hair so it is really not the time for me to let the fro out. I like to keep my hair protected and nourished during the autumn/winter season, so I can enjoy it in the summer.

Here are some hair products I will be adding to my haircare routine this season –

Nanogen Hair Hydrator £12.50

I love this Nanogen Hair Hydrator a lot. It is a lightweight thickening gel that adds shine to the hair while removing fizz. I love the texture and fragrance as well as the packaging. I also love how it moisturises. This is one haircare product I am going to be using a lot of this season. It will be a great addition to my haircare routine after a wash.

This Hair Hydrator by Nanogen is SLS and cruelty free.

Nanogen Root Boost Hair Thickening Spray

This Root Boost Hair Thickening Spray by Nanogen is the real deal. I love how it thickens every strand. My hair feels instantly fuller once I use this hair care product. It is a light, fast absorbing spray that instantly adds bounce and fullness to the hair. I love the fragrance and the packaging here as well. It is now one of my favourite haircare products, and I can see myself using this for a long time.

This Nanogen Root Boost Hair Thickening Spray is SLS and cruelty free.

Spray Bottle

I always make sure my water spray bottle is topped up and ready for use. In the bottle, I have 60% water, 20% leave in conditioner (I currently use Cantu) and 20% coconut oil. I spray my hair about twice a day and it helps keep my hair moisturised and nourished. This water spray bottle technique is the best thing I have ever done for my hair. It has changed my haircare routine for the better.

Tangle Teezer Salon Elite Detangling Hair Brush

My Tangle Teezer detangling hair brush has completely saved my hair. I can use it on wet or dry hair, and I no longer have to deal with tangled hair thanks to this amazing brush. My daughter loves the hair brush as well as she finds it painless and easy to use. This is one hair brush everyone needs to try.

Do what brings you joy

Joy is the highest form of energy, the highest frequency. It is the most powerful emotion and the one emotion many people lack the most. Joy comes from within. It is not something that can happen outside of you. Which is why many of us struggle with this emotion because we spend more time looking at outwards than inwards. We seek acceptance, love, happiness and validation from others and we neglect our inner being. This post is just a quick reminder on the reasons why we should focus on what brings us joy. I will be writing my lifestyle posts like this because I feel a lot more needs to be said about topics like this.

This morning, my meditation was all about activating joy and activate I did. It was a 22 minutes guided mediation on YouTube, and it helped me connect with my inner joy. That is the great power of mediation. We all need to focus on what brings us joy and do them everyday. That way we feed ourselves emotionally and stay grounded in the midst of the chaos.

Do what brings you joy

So what brings you joy? For me I have really found myself for the first time in my life, and that brings me so much joy. The joy that comes from being self aware is second to none. You don’t need acceptance or validation from anyone when you are self aware, when you know who you are. When you are sure of yourself, you know what you want and you go after it without reservations. You don’t need anyone to give you a pat on the back, you just get on with it because you are sure of yourself and that brings so much joy.

Self awareness helped me find my joy

Being self aware and confident has allowed me focus on my passions and future. I work from work and that allows me care for my children the way I want to and also support my family. It has also allowed me study from home. I started studying with The Open University last month; I am studying a Psychology degree and the fact that I am able to have this sort of lifestyle for now brings me so much joy. Being able to work and study from home is amazing and it feels my heart with so much joy. However, I needed to look within and stay within to find my joy. If I listened to others or compared myself with them, I won’t be where I am today. I will be busy keeping up with the Joneses and I would have been filled with regrets upon regrets. Staying grounded helped me find my joy and keep it.

When you do what brings you joy, your life purpose will unfold. That is what happened to me. I now know for certain what my life purpose is and I am going to achieve all I am destined to achieve. I love this quote –

“The meaning of life is to find your gift. The purpose of life is to give it away.” ~David Viscott.

This short quote sums it all up. To find your gift and give it away, you must be self aware. Being self aware and working on your life’s purpose will bring you more joy that you could ever imagine. Look within and find your joy.
