Style Icon – Prince

This post is a day overdue. I meant to write the post yesterday but I had no words. I kept staring at the blank screen, hoping the words would flow, but it just didn’t, so I gave up, thought I would just mention the death of Prince, a music and style god, on social media, and that should do. Then I had a rethink, I saw so many inspiration blog posts and articles dedicated to the legend, and I just knew I had to write a post, or leave to regret it. So here is my tribute to Prince…..

Prince Rogers Nelson first caught my eye with the song Purple Rain. There was something about that track that did it for me, and the music video, with him and his band rocking and rolling with the guitar, and there was the lady in the band crying. It was so moving, I can never forget that music video. I have been loving Prince since then, and Purple Rain, is still one of my favourite tracks today. Apart from his amazing talent as a singer and songwriter, he is also a multi-instrumentalist, record producer, actor, and a style icon. His style had no filter, he was stylishly unapologetic with his big hair, frilly lace tops, hip-hugging bell-bottoms, and makeup. However, the best part of his style was that he owned it every time. I found his self confidence very inspiring.

Speaking of Fashion being Art yesterday; Prince was the definition of Art! He had Art written all over him.

It is sad to come to terms with the fact that we have lost another legend. He left us way too soon, but I know for a fact that just like Michael Jackson, Prince will never be forgotten. There can never ever be another Prince, but I do see a lot of him in Lenny Kravitz, Janelle Monae, and D’Angelo. Prince’s eccentric fashion sense inspired many, and his death will leave a lasting hole in the hearts of millions of people. He will continue to live through his music and we will never forget his amazing fashion sense. He changed the face of fashion and music, 2 of my greatest loves, forever.

Rest in peace Prince.

OOTD: Back to the Roots

African Skater Skirt Image

Say hello to my first outfit post in the month of April, and it is an ode to my African roots. This skater African print skirt was a gift from my mum. I wore it for the first time some days ago, and I got quite a lot of good compliments from so many people. I guess it caught so many eyes because it is a very colourful, different skirt, just what you need to see on a dull, gloomy day.

Growing up, I wore quite a lot of pieces like this skirt. In fact, half of my wardrobe would consist of african printed skirts, trousers and dresses, and I loved it. You won’t see this skirt or anything like it on the high street, which makes it even more precious.

Every now and again, I will like to mix my African pieces with my regular pieces, and create a very different look, so keep reading Fashion and Style Police, a lot of fashion and style inspiration coming your way.

I found it incredibly easy to style this custom-made skirt. I love seeing lace paired with African prints, maybe because I have seen a lot of lace African outfits over the years. I think they complement each other perfectly so I went for the look, and I think it turned out great.

OOTD: I Can Smell Spring

Spring Outfit Image

A change in season is always a big deal, as far as fashion is concerned, because we fashion lovers get to rearrange our wardrobe and usher in pieces for the new season. I love spring because it has the perfect temperature, not too warm or too cold, but it is the endless rain that comes along with it, I don’t like too much. I also love the fact that I can still layer up light pieces in spring. This weather makes styling outfits a lot of fun.

This black dress by Accessorise is a lovely addition to my spring wardrobe. It is a Lace Insert Tassel Maxi Dress and it is my only maxi dress at the moment, not had one in ages. This versatile piece is the perfect maxi dress. It creates an effortlessly chic look, and the elasticated waistband with adjustable tasselled ties, means the sizing is quite flexible too, which is great for petite ladies.

I love the fact that this piece is so easy to style up with a jacket and high heels like I have done here, or dress down with flats for a walk on a beach.

Speaking of beaches, I am badly in need of a proper holiday. It feels like I havn’t had one in ages. In an ideal situation, I would want to visit Dubai again. I visited the beautiful country some years ago and it was the best holiday I ever had, followed closely by my Miami holiday. The issue is, flights are so expensive these days, it is almost impossible to go away nice, so I always end up visiting a country in EU, but let’s see how it goes, fingers and toes crossed. Do you have any holidays planned for the year? Where are you off to?
