The Loneliness of the Self Employed

I went full-time as a self-employed person about 2 years ago, and I can testify first-hand to how lonely a career it can be. Being a freelancer/self-employed person usually means you work from home alone, and some days can be a lot harder than others, even for the introverts.

I have always been an introvert, I am very comfortable being by myself, and I do enjoy being alone most of the time. But sometimes I miss the chit-chat and the buzz that goes on in a regular workplace; being able to have meetings, bounce off ideas, and just the usual office banter. Just so you know, I was not a fan of any of these things when I had my normal job, but I guess sometimes we humans miss things we don’t have, even if we don’t really like it. Why we do, I don’t know, we just do.

The loneliness of being a freelancer is real, so I won’t advise anyone who enjoys being in the company of others to go self-employed, except you have a form of working arrangement that involves working or meeting regularly with other self-employed people in your niche.

There are ways to deal with the loneliness and frustrations of the self-employed world, here is how I deal with them –

Have a sounding board

Having a sounding board is very important when you are self-employed. A sounding board is someone you trust who would listen to your achievements, frustrations, and just someone you can have a chat with about your work, and who can offer you good advice as well. The more sounding boards you have, the better. I have one main sounding board, and a few others. They all help keep me sane. Whenever I feel like having a rant, I know I can trust them to listen. It also feels great to share milestones and achievements with them.

Take regular breaks

Regular breaks are very important when you work alone from home, because you can easily find yourself working continuously on your coach, without taking a break for hours. Taking breaks means you get to do other things which is great for your mental health and fitness life. Taking regular breaks also means you can leave the house for a walk, which is great because you get to interact with others while you are at it.

I try to go for long walks everyday, and I love how fit I am. My Fitbit stats speak for itself.

Working in coffee shops

Working in coffee shops also help combat the loneliness and isolation. I personally find working in coffee shops very distracting, so I tend not to do this, but I know many who do and enjoy it.

Joining Facebook groups and Twitter chats

I have joined a couple of Facebook blogging and freelance groups, and I also try to take part in as many Twitter chats as I can. These groups and chats help combat the isolation.

Overall, working from home works well for me. I won’t change my flexible working conditions for anything, but some days I need to have my Spotify playlists on repeat to get rid of the silence.

Do you work from home? How do you deal with the loneliness?

OOTD: My Protein Sportswear

My Protein Red Concreate Image

Back in the day, before I became a full-fledged adult with a house and 2 kids, I used to find the time every evening, after a demanding office job, to go to our local L A Fitness gym. I did that for about a year and stopped because I could no longer justify the £35 monthly gym membership subscription. So now, I pop into a gym when I have a spare moment, which is once in a blue moon. I rather exercise at home, or go running/walking. I still go swimming with the family every weekend, so that has kind of replaced the gym really.

Work It Out Image

However, I am now thinking of checking out some fitness videos on YouTube, aka my go to online directory, so if you know of any cool fitness channels, let me know in the comment section below. I think I would want a structured work out routine, even if it is just for a few minutes a day.

My Protein Red Concreate Kit Image

The fact that I have this cool fitness kit from My Protein has really put me in the fitness mood. I guess a cool fitness kit has the power like that. I am eager to work on my abs now. And who would blame me? The Red Concreate sportswear by My Protein is the prettiest sportswear collection I have seen in a very long time. I love the red and black design a lot. It goes with my summer hair. I also really like the quality of the pieces. The stretch and support it provides ensures the pieces stay on exactly how I want them.

I got the complete kit from My Protein, so the power tights and shorts, sports bra, running jacket and vest. And I even have the right sportsbag already.

My Protein Red Concreate Review

I got the HEAD sportsbag last year, and it has now become our swimming bag. So I am good to go pretty much, as far as sportswear is concerned.

This green Acquablend bottle is also a handy and stylish fitness accessory. I take it everywhere. It helps me drink a lot more water, thanks to a few slices of cucumber and some ice. I love it.

I am also hardly ever without my Fitbit. I walk around a lot, even on days when I don’t leave the house. I make sure I am always on the move, and I aim to clock in at least 7000 steps a day. I smash this target on most days, even when I am stuck indoors.

Hey people. Happy new week. I hope you all had a terrific weekend, because I did. It is another Monday, and I am ready to set this week off with a bang and finish off February on the highest note.

For this double denim outfit post, I am rocking two denim pieces and accessories with a black and white scarf, gold sneakers, black sunnies and black bag.

I love rocking the denim on denim look. I find it effortlessly chic and easy to style. The weather is getting a lot better, the chill has reduced so it is the perfect time to start layering with lighter pieces, and I am starting off with this double denim outfit. Twice as much denim, is twice as good!

This Joules denim dress is a new addition in my wardrobe. I have not had a denim dress in my wardrobe for years so I was happy to grab this online. I fell in love with it as soon as it landed on my doorstep. I love the free fit of this jersey pocket dress. It is timeless, classic and very flattering. It can be worn layered up with leggings/jeggings during winter, or worn on its own during summer. It is such a versatile piece, I will be wearing a lot of it during the coming months.

Another new wardrobe addition is this Lacoste Aviator sunnies. It is my first pair of Aviator style sunglasses so you can imagine the love I have for it.  I adore the contemporary, oversized look. You will be seeing a lot of this beauty on Fashion and Style Police.
