Holiday Digital Detox

Holidays

Have you ever planned to go on holiday, and not check emails, Facebook, Instagram, blogs, and other social media platforms? Was your holiday digital detox successful, or did it crash and burn after a few hours, with you hungrily logging on to Twitter, to see what you have missed? The whole idea of going on holiday, is so you can relax, unwind and have a good time, but many of us cannot stay away from whatever we call work, and social media.

As a full-time blogger, I have accepted the fact that I cannot go on holiday and have a full digital detox. I can go a few hours, but at the end of the day, I will have to log on and see what is happening. That is the major issue with being a blogger, you can’t just decide to log off social media and your blog for too long, if you do, your blog will likely suffer the repercussions of you being away.

However, before I became a blogger, I could go days without going on social media.  Having a holiday digital detox would have been a walk in the park for me then, so I know it is possible, but the question is, how many people actually do it? We are currently in a fast pace, technology driven society, and many of us are addicted to social media and blogs.

A new research carried out by an online travel agency – Sunshine, has uncovered a lot about the whole holiday digital detoxing, in terms of how long the average tech-free plan lasts for. According to the findings, holidaymakers who plan to go on a complete holiday digital detox, give in after just six hours into their holiday, on average; with social media being the main lure.

A recent poll that was carried out in the UK by Sunshine, revealed that many failed in their pursuit of a technology-free holiday, and 54% of the total respondents who took part in the poll said that they used technology more on holiday than they did at home. Wow who knew!?

The top 5 answers were as follows:
1.    I wanted to look/post on social media – 32%
2.    I needed to check something work-related (e.g. emails) – 27%
3.    I forgot I had planned a digital detox/force of habit – 21%
4.    I needed to call/message back home – 16%
5.    I got bored – 2%

Now, I will fall into the number 1 and 2. I will need to check and respond to emails at some point while on holiday, and I will need to check social media, even if it is just once a day, while on holiday. I can never see myself at this stage in my life, having a full holiday digital detox, it just won’t work. I will break in 24 hours, to check my blog, lol.

What I do see myself doing, and what I need to do, is to have a WHOLE day off social media, blogs and emails. I think I am becoming too addicted to the whole social media thingy, so I am planning a day off it completely. I will see how that goes, and then I may plan a whole weekend off.

I tweeted about this some days ago, and chatted with Alice; who blogs at Zest of Alice. We chatted about the benefits of having a digital detox every now and again. She wrote a lovely post about how she quit social media, only to go back on it, so check out her blog post, if you are in need of a good read.

Have you ever planned a digital detox while on holiday? How did it go?

6 Beauty Crimes You May Be Committing

image

Many of us are committing beauty crimes without us knowing. I know I am, and I know many bloggers, vloggers and celebrities that commit a few of the beauty crimes listed on here. Nobody’s perfect, neither is any makeup or skincare routine, but some crimes are worst than imperfect, they could leave us with lasting consequences.

Here are some of the most common beauty crimes I see around:

Bloggers/Vloggers Selling Used Makeup

I see a lot of bloggers/vloggers selling old makeup online, claiming it has only been swatched or used once, so it is good enough to be sold. Deep down, I am hoping we all agree this isn’t right. Like lipsticks, foundations, concealers, eye pencils, mascaras, and all the others, should not be shared, or bought unboxed. The only makeup you should be buying, should be brand new. Sharing makeup products could lead to skin infections, eye infections, and other skin problems you really can do without.

The only exception is when it comes to makeup artists. So if you are having your makeup professionally done, you will likely be using the artist’s makeup, which is fine as long as every product is applied with a makeup brush. The artist should obviously have the makeup brushes cleaned after each use.

Swatching on the Back of your Hand

I see a lot of bloggers/vloggers swatching makeup products behind the hands. This is so common and so wrong. The skin on back of the hand is a lot darker than our face, due to sun exposure. To ensure you get the ride shade, swatch the makeup products preferably on your jaw line, or the inner part of your arms, which is the closest shade to your face. This ensures you pick the right shade of product.

Concealer before Foundation

The concealer should be applied AFTER the foundation and not before. The reason being is once the foundation is applied correctly, you may find that you don’t have to use the concealer as much, if at all. The foundation creates the right base for makeup. It is called ‘foundation’ for a reason.

Wrong Shade of Foundation

I have been sold the wrong shade of foundation like I said in my previous beauty post, so I know all about buying the wrong shade of makeup. However, some women deliberately go for a light/pale concealer, thinking it will help conceal the areas that need concealing better. This is so wrong. Your concealer should match your foundation to cover up and hide shadows.

If you find that you have the wrong shade of concealer already, do not panic. You can most likely correct the shade by mixing your concealer with a bit of foundation, providing that foundation is in the right shade.

Not Cleaning Your Makeup Brushes

Many of us do not clean our makeup brushes as often as we should, which is BAD. You should clean your makeup brushes as often as you use them. I use mine like twice a week most times, so I clean them once a month. If you use them every day, you should be cleaning them every week.

Watering Down your Cosmetics

I know I am so guilty of this. I tend to water down facial wash products when they are almost finished. I don’t know why I do it but I do it. Maybe it is because I do it with the dish washing liquid, it has become a kind of habit now, but it is beauty crime. Skincare products contain water, making them susceptible to contamination by micro-organisms: bacteria, viruses, fungi and yeasts. That is why it is so important not to water down cosmetics, as you change the natural balance of preservatives designed to keep products safe.

Kate Moss Covers British Vogue May 2016

Kate-Moss-Vogue-UK-May-2016-620x804

British Vogue has been getting all the magazine covers right in my eyes, this 2016. I am totally digging all of them, especially the last cover with Rihanna, and this latest cover is no exception. The beautiful Kate Moss is on the cover of Vogue UK May 2016 issue, looking amazing. The British supermodel is a regular, she has been featured on quite a number of Vogue Covers, and I am not surprised she has, she loves the camera, and the camera loves her.

For this issue, Kate Moss was photographed by Craig McDean. I am loving the rock-chick look she has going on here. It is so her, and she looks so good. The second picture below is giving me life. This should have been the cover picture in my opinion, it is more edgy.

I know Vogue loves having Kate Moss on their cover, and I can understand why, but I am getting bored of seeing her face on the magazine covers if I am being honest. I will like to see other fresh faces on the cover. I personally won’t be buying this issue as it does not excite me at all. I feel I have read all there is to read about Kate Moss, and I know many other readers feel the same. Here are some quotes confirming my thoughts:

Kate Moss on British Vogue’s cover again. AGAIN. Am I the only one wishing they’d branch out once in a while?!?

It amazes me that they always find something to write about Kate Moss.

Very boring, I feel like I’ve seen this before …
Also I’m tired of Kate, she doesn’t bring anything new to the table anymore.

I see where the comments are coming from because I am tired as well.

What are your thoughts? Do you enjoy seeing Kate on magazine covers so often? Sound off in the comment section.

Thanks for reading and have a lovely day.
